Keeping unlim. data?

I have a friend making the upgrade form the original Incredible to the Rezound, but shes losing her unlimited data.

I made the switch via Amazon wireless and kept my unlimited data. That was quite awhile ago though.
(Unlimited Email & Web For Smartphones $29.99 / month)

Does she have the option to be 'grandfathered in' and keep her unlimited?
I suggested calling Verizon, don't even bother with the cust service, go right to a manager or the retentions dept. if she had to.

I suggest taking a minute, holding your unlimited data plan close, like you'll never see her again, kiss her softly, say goodbye and never look back.

or switch to sprint.

Verizon is not allowing anybody to be grandfathered in. I added a line to my account, and they took my unlimited away just last week.

The most expensive cellphone company just got even more expensive...
 
You lose unlimited if you use a subsidized upgrade, which results in a renewed contract. It's the contract renewal which triggers the loss of unlimited. Putting a different phone on your line doesn't trigger a contract renewal, so buying retail or used will allow you to keep unlimited.

dang. I should have made my wife get her own plan then instead of putting her on mine. It's not like family plans save you any money anyways. I could have kept my unlimited, and put her on the smallest data package...

but i think in the OP's case, couldn't switching from a non-LTE to an LTE phone cause any issues with keeping unlimited, regardless if the phone is bought used/at retail?

The only problem would be using VZW to upgrade (meaning, getting a phone from them as opposed to purchasing your own phone at either full retail or from a secondary market).

Now, VZW might be bummed as OP is now able to drink unlimited-ly from the LTE pipeline but there are no issues (I went from DInc to Rezound, no worries, still unlimited.)
 
You can also add to a line to an existing family account without losing your own unlimited.

I have a family line with 3 phones (me - unlimited, wife - 2 GB, father - 2 GB). Cost works out roughly the same as the new share plan with pros (unlimited for me) and cons (no tethering, limited texting).

As long as I do not upgrade the phone associated with my line, I do not have to give up my unlimited plan (at least not under current rules). My dad's line (he is happy with my old Droid X2) is up for a renewal. I can get a new subsidized phone on his line but replace mine and keep my unlimited. Dad can either have my Rezound or keep the Droid X2. As long as I don't use the available upgrade on my own line, I do not have to give up unlimited.

Note that this is not Verizon's "preferred" plan. They will try to steer you into the Family Share plan by touting its advantages (free tethering, adjustable data costs based on use, unlimited talk/text). You may have to ask to do what I do. But it still exists -- I just upgraded my wife from a feature phone to a smart phone -- a plan change -- and still have my own unlimited data.
 
This is how I plan on attempting to upgrade phones for my husband. Between my husband and me we have 3 lines. One for him, one for me, one for the house (no land line).

To start

line 1 phone A (unlimited, smart phone)
line 2 phone B (unlimited, smart phone)
line 3 phone C (limited, non-smart phone)

upgrade phone C to phone D (smart phone) on line 3. (I may have to cough up a day or two's worth of a data fee).

play switcharoo on the handsets.

line 1 phone A (should be still unlimited as it wasn't touched)
line 2 phone D (should be still unlimited as it's plan wasn't touched)
line 3 phone C (still non-smart phone (phone B is now without service), data dropped)

The "upgraded" line is now line 3, for which unlimited data is not an issue.

Doing it this way limits us to new subsidized phones each every four years. I'd even be willing to start a fourth line, purely as an "upgrade" line. $10/mo=$240 over 2 years + $200 for new phone is still a couple hundred cheaper than a new phone at full price!

Am I off my rocker?

I've heard even if you just put a different phone on your plan, without actually changing your plan, they will take your unlimited. I dunno for sure tho, you should definitely try it and let us know if you get away with it.

but according to esmith's post, your plan might just work!
 
I dont think keeping the unlimited data is as big a deal anymore. I thought along the lines of all of you and swore I would jump through whatever hoops there were or pay full retail for a new phone to keep my "cherished" unlimited data. I have rooted all my previous android phones mainly to wireless tether so I could run my tablet/nook/laptop on the go without paying extra fees. I never looked or cared one bit about the amount of data I used because I knew it was unlimited. Then it was time for a upgrade and I had verizon look into how much data I was actually using and the combined total for 4 smartphones on my plan was averaging around 8 gig a month. I picked up the shared data for 10gig a month and actually save a little money doing it that way opposed to paying 30 bucks for each of my 4 lines, can wirelessly tether on any of my android phones now without rooting and still stay under my 10gig a month without sacrificing anything I want to do. I have no issue with verizon trying to move away from the unlimited to sustain network integrity because there are so many people that abuse this privelage just because they can and that only adds to a bogged down verizon network. Also, you can buy ALOT of data from verizon for the price that your willing to pay for a full retail phone just to keep unlimited!

I have been known to use 8-10G a month on my phone alone. This doesn't count my hubbies smartphone. I stream radio in the morning (my favorite morning show doesn't air in my city anymore). I will Rhapsody a bit throughout the day (I download and listen "offline" when I think about it). I watch a TV show during lunch with Hulu+. No, I don't have Wifi available at work. I also travel a lot for children's sports ... using my Google Navigator ... and streaming music.

To take my 2 smartphone lines (and one standard phone line) to a shared 3 line plan at this level would cost me an additional $60/mo ... or something like that.

Yes, I'm not normal (which I tend to hear a lot! ;) ) ... but it does pay for some of us to jump through hoops.

One caveat to my plan above ... I hear they don't do the $10 for the additional line anymore. That's gone up to $30 ... so it might just be a wash now.

WOW, that alot of data. Obviously it doesnt work for you and there will always be cases like that, but I think that for the vast majority of people the new system isnt as bad as originally thought if they start crunching numbers.

I completely agree.

But I need to figure something out soon ... my hubby's phone (yes only one, I don't have multiple "hubbies" as indicated above :o ) is on its last leg and it's replacement time. His battery is toast, he's dropping calls all the time (and, no, not just to me ;) ) and he's generally annoyed by it.

EDIT:

Nevermind folks ... when I was estimating costs I forgot that I have a 20% discount. That brings the plans a whole lot closer ... I think I have to drop the line 3 phone to make it equal ... but we really never use that phone anyway.
