Root Kernal and signal strength?

Just a quick question regarding the thread topic - (1) since rooting I have not been able to replicate the same signal strength I had when I was @ stock. Have tried various roms and kernals but still seem to have problems when at work with the phone floating around 1 bar and always straining my battery trying to keep a 3g signal constant. Is this kernal related, and therefore, i should just keep trying combo's until I get one that works best or will I always get best coverage with a stock kernal? Could it be ROM related?

It's just a pain because my battery will getted sucked all day at work and then as soon as I pop out of that bomb shelter I get excellent battery life when signal improves. I've updated PRL/Profile with every rom/kernal switch and even played around with juice defender which helps but doesn't answer my question regarding what is causing the problem.

(2) On a side note, to the fine people looking to answer who have probably already flashed many of these; any consensus on the most stable 3.5 rom? I've been leaning towards giving the mik flavor a try but I've been relying heavily on mik roms and wondering if that may be causing poor signal strength..? Thanks in advance!

Many of the ROMS now display "true" signal strength. Which is less than what the stock unrooted phones displayed.

If you do not use your cell phone for messaging or calls at work I would suggest putting it into airplane mode. This will shut off all radios so your phone wont look for a signal.

I do use phone for messaging/calls/browsing at work which wasn't really an issue before rooting but now seems to be draining battery while in poor service area. Turning off 3g via juice defender was doing a pretty decent job but I was just seeing if there was anything I could tweak.

OCN - Custom as in chop suey or more freedom? Or customizing a kernal myself? Have not tried the latter. I thought I read somewhere that different roms were notorious for having less than stellar signal so I was looking for verification or suggestions as to how this could be fixed. Maybe I should look into the booster scripts I've read into? Thanks for the help!

to roms really to not play in radio signals at all. what they do now though, is that they show truer signal which to many will look like weaker signal. when in truth that is what the signal has always been.

and as far kernels go, i guess you can customize one if you know how. i think that lithid over on xda has even put out a guide. here it is:[DEV][SCRIPT][HOW-TO] Build MR GB 2.6.35 without thinking? WAHTS!? - xda-developers

what i meant was a custom kernel vs stock kernel. and yes like you said freedom and chop suey are custom kernels. also there is the golden monkey 1.1 kernel as well.
