Root Kernel flash question

I am getting ready to flash a netarchy kernel. Can I use quickboot to go into recovery and wipe the delvik and cache. then flash. Or do I have to do it thru clockwork mod.
 
My bad I had clockworkmod on the phone. When I booted into recovery I see on the first screen I see wipe cache partition. IS this the cache I am suppose to wipe?
 
I've heard differing reports about wiping caches before flashing a kernel.

The last time I flashed a kernel, I didn't bother and I've not had any problems since. As long as you take a backup of your previous config before you do anything, you can always restore your backup if it doesn't boot.
 
It's been a while since I've used Clockwork. I believe most people here are using Amon RA for recovery. It's supposed to be less buggy that Clockwork, although I never experienced any issues myself prior to switching to amon ra.

To answer your question, yes. The cache partition is what you want to select when wiping cache. To wipe dalvik cache, you need to select "advanced" and then dalvik.

I made a nand and went into clockwork mod to wipe cache. The problem is that all the menus I've seen on clockwork mod via youtube are different then the one I have.
For example on the initial screen they say wipe cache, on mine it says wipe cache partition. I want to know if that was the same thing and the dev just changed the wording.
When I explore advanced it "does" say wipe delvik cache.

Wipes the cache partition of the device to clear all the data accumulated there over use. This is often used before installing a new ROM, app, kernel or any similar mod via recovery

OK, It installed. I do have a question concerning the PCM.zip file. did that have to be removed. If not can I now just go back and reboot.
 
It is always recommended to wipe the cache partition and dalvik cache before you flash anything. Plus you should do a nandroid backup before you change anything.
It's not required to do anything to your phone, its your choice to do what you want. ;)

I use clockwork recovery, I know, I like to live on the edge. :D
You should be using cwm (clockwork mod) version 2.6.xx. If you're using version 3.0.xx, download ROM manager from the market and flash clockwork mod from this app, that will give you version 2.6.xx. This version supports both script and edify, which I won't define here.
You could also use amon-ra recovery, which is more popular, and has a higher recommendation. I will actually advise you to use amon-ra. Do a search for amon-ra recovery, and you should find links and instructions to switch to this recovery. I'd link you, but I'm on my phone. :(

I would delete or remove the PC36IMG file from your sd card. did you do the switch to amon ra? if you did then i would make a nandroid backup while in recovery now. when doing a nandroid backup in amon ra, i would keep the three items checked and also check wimax. just in case you loose your wimax keys, you will have a nandroid backup that has it. i keep at least one backup with my wimax keys backed up on my computer.

As a little advise don't do anything from ROM manager. It's buggy, will cause problems. Always do everything from recovery manually.
 
I checked the settings on my phone and the version of clockwork mod is 3.30
I had rom manager already installed.

** what probs does still haveing the PC36IMG file installed pose.

If possible I would like a link to the correct amon RA kernel for my phone.

***Also since the installation there is a icon (shield with dot that turns red/blue) on my notification bar that says:
"Data off (WiFi), WiFi on (screen) wifi traffic screen-x2.19
Is this normal?

Sage advice. I've never had issues with ROM Manager (I only use it to boot into recovery now), but I know a lot of ROM developers don't recommend using it.

there is really no problem per se. it just will ask you to update each time you try and go into the hboot screen. make to select no each time.

i never seen that before so i'm not sure. is your data truned off? do you have wifi on?

ah yeah that is right. i have not used juice defender in a while now. but yeah setcpu will help with overclocking/underclocking your phone.
 
Ok...I see now.
If I use setcpu is the netarchy kernel already have the perflock disabled, or do I have to disable it?

ah you havent switched to a custom rom yet?? my two favorite roms (since im a sense guy lol) are myn's warm twopointtwo and the new synergy rom...

the BEST kernel i have ever come across for battery life (and this is just my opinion) is the 2.6.32.27-netarchy-toastmod-4.3.4-cfs-nohavs-suv-nosbc

my battery life has been SICK with the static undervolting... and in case you were wondering i would not get an sbc kernel i have heard some HORRIBLE things about what that will do to your battery... ion batteries are not supposed to charge that way and it will ruin your battery...
 
yeah i agree with guitarboy. netarchy kernels rule.

but i disagree on sbc kernels. they do overcharge but not to the point the your battery will be ruined quickly. over the long haul yes it will. but lets say i have a new evo and decided to use the sbc kernel. i will probably get 2yrs worth from it with the sbc kernel vs 3yrs without. most phone have a shelf life of two years anyways so the trade off of better battery life is better then having a battery longer IMHO. plus batteries are cheap these days. and i'm was getting awesome battery life with sbc kernels.

you are the first person i have seen that has said they like sbc kernels... but that is a good way to look at it... i have personally never tried them so i cant really talk.. i have just seen SO MANY bad reviews that i dont even care to try them
