welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what rom are you on? there are kernels for sense roms and aosp roms. there are also froyo kernels, gingerbread kernels, and ics kernels.

here is a guide to help you further understand kernels:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html

and a guide for setcpu:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html

also keep in mind that what works for me may not work for you. kernels will always be YRMV so sometimes it is hard to recommend a kernel that works for you.

but if you can tell us what rom you are on, then we can at least point you in the right direction.

well you can get most kernels from here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

the one people seem to like is the anthrax kernel, but for me it does not like my phone very much. my phone really liked the freedom kernel. to get anthrax you can go here:Anthrax Kernel for Evo 4G. i think there is another place to get it directly from the dev himself, but i forget where to go for it. the freedom kernel link still works though in the given thread i gave earlier.

one last thing try a kernel and give it a few days before moving on. it usually takes a kernel a few days to settle in.
