Root Kernel Or ROM First

Just successfully rooted 2.3.3 now I want to install Mik3d and GoldenMonkey 1.1. Which to do first? The ROM or Kernel?

just make a nandroid backup before flashing a kernel. that way you can just restore the nandroid backup and start over.
