Root Kernel problem

Hello everyone, first of all, this is post number 1. So a brief introduction. Evo 4G rooted with revolutionary, running the latest cm7. I admit I'm pretty much a noob, I don't understand this linux-based world yet but I'm learning slowly. I apologize if I have missed a thread that covers my issue but I work and go to college fulltime so I'm tired and get kinda lazy.

Anyway, I'm just trying to find a stable AOSP Kernel and from what I've read there a few. I'm using Tiamat right now. I wanted to try Savaged Zen but their site was down for the past few days. Now the download page is up but the links don't work, nor does half the rest of the site for that matter. Can anyone help me out here? Or maybe suggest a different Kernel? The most recent Tiamat (4.1.0) made my evo run extremely slow so I used the one before that (4.0.8) and it's okay, but still not totally stable.

Welcome to the forums!

Tiamat seems to be what most people use for AOSP. Before we assume its the kernel, lets try to eliminate some other possibilities.

Are you using SetCPU? If so, what are your settings?

What is your flashing procedure when flashing a kernel? You should be manually wiping both dalvik cache and cache in recovery at least once. I'd suggest wiping 3 times each.

I don't use SetCPU.

I have flashed kernels using two different methods. I've done it manually by using recovery, RA-supersonic-v2.3, and flashing the Kernel as a .zip from the SD card. I don't remember if I cleared Dalvik and Cache so I suppose I'll wipe them both 3 times as you suggested and reflash Tiamat.

I've also used Flash Image GUI, it automatically clears Dalvik and Cache.

I just reflashed so we'll see what happens.

UPDATE: I reflashed using Tiamat 4.1.0 again just to make sure the issues I had first time around weren't a fluke, but it's as bad as it was before. I'm showing 230mb of free RAM and it's running like only 10 is free. Slow as molasses.

try and wipe again without using the app. i really do not trust apps to flash and wipe for me. i would really recommend that you do things manually.

As Ocn has said try doing all this stuff manually. Stay away from programs like Rom Manager and this Flash Image Gui. Much better to do it yourself manually. I have read way to many post of people coming in here using programs like that and having issues.

How does this phone react to a Sense ROM? Is it still slow or is it fairly quick? How Does the Native CM7 Kernel act? Have you tried using another AOSP ROM like Xplod?
 
Try changing your radio those can interfere with how your phone operates. I changed mine to baseband 2.15.00.05.02 and it made my evo blaze, and everyother radio slows my phones performance and download speeds just like what you described. Also I'm running Savaged Zen rc4 with Savaged zens latest kernel and my phone runs like I think it should with no lag great download speeds. So check your radio it could be that. Read about how to flash it though its pretty much just like a rom but it rebooted itsself a couple times.

Radios have nothing to do with roms& kernels. Radios do determine the kind of signal you get

yeah argedion is correct. radios does not play into how the rom runs. it will affect the internet speeds and call quality but that is about it. also make sure that you backup wimax when making a nandroid backup before flashing radios. it is a good way of loosing your 4g forever. you can read this if you like:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html
 
Here's what I would do. If you're unsure of whether you wiped cache or dalvik, and/or used something other than manual recovery to wipe and flash, I would do a fresh install of everything. And while you're at it, you won't find a better AOSP kernel than Tiamat 3.3.7. Yes, it's an older kernel, but also proven by the masses to be the best. CM7 based stuff can be tricky at times with bluetooth or HDMI, but Tiamat the 3.3.7 build is rock solid. I would highly recommend it.

Thanks to everyone for the input, I don't have time to look into all of this until later tonight. I did a Dalvik and Cache wipe and haven't noticed a positive difference. I'm doing everything manually as suggested. I did completely lose 3G all of the sudden about an hour ago... I will look into some of these other suggested Kernels and if I'm still having issues I may try a Sense rom and see if that helps. Thanks again and I'll update as soon as I can.
 
Update: Before I did anything else I ended up losing 3G and I have no idea why. This may or may not be related to the current topic, I don't know. I did a search on the issue and didn't really find what I was looking for. 4G is still there, and my mobile network is enabled in the settings.

I flashed the Tiamat 3.3.7 like someone suggested and that didn't help anything, so I reflashed cm7 and kept the native Kernel. It didn't seem to really make a difference as far as my original issue. As far as the 3G, when I initially booted up after reflashing cm7, the 3G symbol appeared for like 5 seconds and disappeared again. Any ideas here? Should I go into recovery and restore my nandroid backup? Or does someone know a fix for the 3G?
 
Just throwing this out there is wifi on and conected at the moment because when wifi conects 3g shuts down on a sense rom and im fairly sure its the same on aosp also because the phone will use the wifi instead of the 3g.

Newest update is a positive one. I lost 3G but I got it back by restoring a Nandroid backup. I reflashed cm7 and Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and am now completely stable from what I can tell the last couple hours. Thanks again to everyone who contributed. I don't feel the need to mess with anything else for now as long as I'm stable, until I do more research.

My roomate and I have the same problem with Tiamat 4.1 and CM7.1 Sluggishness is much greater than CM 7.0.3 and Tiamat 4.0.8. I flashed manually all caches including dalvik, but didn't do them 3x as recommended. I am going to try SavageZen and see if it is more stable and if not I'll return to older Tiamat. thanks for the information.
