Root Kernels

Hello, Newbie here :)
I really don't know anything about kernels. What are they for? (I'm guessing it makes the phone run faster/smoother?) Does it make battery life better?

Right now I'm on CM7 TG-Reloaded, Build 20111228I believe. Which will be the best kernel for this?

I'm also thinking about trying out MIUI for a while. What are some of differences b/w CM7 and MIUI? other than MIUI interface is more customizable than CM? Also, is there an app to edit the carrier name in MIUI?

The kernel is the inner workings of the ROM. It determines how the ROM uses the hardware That's about all I know, hopefully someone else can give you more information, or you could try Google.

Basically it is the bridge between the hardware and software. Here is a good description from wikipedia:
In computing, the kernel is the main component of most computer operating systems; it is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. The kernel's responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components). Usually as a basic component of an operating system, a kernel can provide the lowest-level abstraction layer for the resources (especially processors and I/O devices) that application software must control to perform its function. It typically makes these facilities available to application processes through inter-process communication mechanisms and system calls.

For the MT, there are only a limited number of kernel choices. SpeedDemon Kernel for MIUI, and for TG-Reloaded either my WhyKernel included with the ROM, or TheOC (haven't been updated in a while). The kernel handles lowlevel hardware interactions, Android sits on top of it with its apps and frameworks.

And if your on a stock rom i believe mine and the very outdated one b pwnyourace are the only ones for our froyo Roms!

Just as they all say, interactive is the best, but I'd use no frills cpu control invade your phone rebooted due to overclocking too high, and CPU spy shows you what the kernel is doing in a way
