Help Keyboard options

I just updated to 2.2.1 (from 2.1) and my keyboard turned gray like the normal multitouch. apparently the swype keyboard is the same color now too. I hardly used swype, but I kept it set to that because I liked the keyboard's dark color.

Pretty obvious I'm going to have to get a different keyboard from the market. I got the ultra keyboard trial, but I can't seem to get it to apply. I have "make active" checked on my little custom theme I have made and also the box checked in the settings menu for "ultra keyboard trial", but when I go to text and enter text into any field the normal droid multitouch comes up. Will the ultra keyboard preview not let me install it into the phone where I can actually use it to try it out or am I stuck with a preview??

Also, if there are any other highly recommended keyboards, I'd like to hear some suggestions. I don't mind paying for something decent, but I'd like to have a free one if there is a decent one out there.

What do you mean turned gray? Like you can't use it? I use swype about 90% of the time, but the Gingerbread keyboard included in the Apex ROM is a good choice too.

It is the same color as the multitouch keyboard. Kind of a light gray color with black letters and symbols. The swype keyboard used to be a dark blue color with white letters.

I've actually been using Ultra Keyboard for the past 3 months or so. I tried 'Better Keyboard', 'Smart Keyboard', 'Swiftkey' and some others, but wound up loving all the options on Ultra. The toolbar between the keyboard and input screen is awesome, and incredibly useful. One thing it has that helps me keep my sanity with this phone is directional (optional) arrows. Because often times I'll type something out, and then see that I've mispelled a work way back a couple of lines, and I can't seem to press the correct space with my fingertip for ANYTHING!!! Drives me crazy!!!

So in Ultra, I just arrow to the point I need my cursor to be and presto, no more problem. And that's only one bennefit. There are quite a few great features in Ultra Keyboard. Switching colors is very easy to do as well. Have you tried that out?

Ultra is okay, I just felt like the suggestions bar always intruded on what I was doing, it's like the OS never recognized it as part of the keyboard and would stick stuff behind it.

The text prediction was never great either IMO. It was super customizable, though.

I switched to the Gingerbread keyboard and I think it's great. Compact, simple, good text prediction, nice looking. Wish it had arrows like Ultra, though.
