Root Kings R4 VVM help

Android Expert
I am not getting VVM to work on Kings GB R4. I went into TB and restored an older version. That had worked for me in the past...didn't work this time. I completely deleted it off the phone and then went and found an .apk over on XDA(not really sure it was the right one but it was for the EVO) and installed it and still get the V30 error along with the 9016 text message. I would really like to settle on a ROM for a bit if I can get one to work completely and I would like it to be this one. Some help would be appreciated. I know this is a common problem and I have done some searching on here. The searches on XDA have yielded way too much to search through. Anyway, I would reckon there is an easy fix...

TIA

Thats what redlist is for :D

Yeah, I finally got it all figured out. Sheet mang, what a PIA.

For anyone reading this....

Download the link above. You will then get your voicemails but you will also get the 9016 text messages.

Add 9016 to your contacts

Down load Redlist and any other SMS app(ie Handcent)....you will now be using a 3rd party messaging app. If you don't want to do that, you should abandon ship right here. I personally am not sure I will go this route because of this....I have reasons....

Redlist the 9016 contact(I blacklisted it too...dunno the difference)

Disable the stock messaging app notification(you have to do that anyway or you would get double notifications)

Even with this set up, you will STILL get a red dot in the notification bar indicating a redlisted contact is contacting you. So you must go into the Redlist settings and disable any notifications.

There ya have it. A major PIA(IMHO) to enjoy the perceived benefits of an AOSP ROM!(maybe this is endemic to GB AOSP ROMs only???)

Why not just use google voice? It's free, it transcribes messages for free, conditional call forwarding from Sprint is free, and I've never had any issues getting it set up with any ROM ever. Why do you guys prefer the Sprint VVM? Am I missing something?

maybe im the one missing something but i did not like google voice at all. I didnt want to mess with it. If i got a voicemail i received a vm notification, an email, and 2 texts lol. Not to mention setting up a new greeting and such.

Ive never had any of the vvm issues every one else seems to have though. Just install the vvm i keep on my sd then restore data...?

You're not really missing anything Brent. It pays for me to have the call back feature(maybe Google voice would work). At work we have the ability to set up criteria for open trips and then the host computer will automatically text us if that criteria is met. I can set up a contact and the stock app "syncs" to that contact and the text message. IOW, when I receive the text I can press the contact within the text and will immediately call back. For whatever reason, Handcent will not recognize the contact or sync it together with the contact I have made in my list. The problem in this case is that the text is not coming from a phone....it is coming from a computer. So Handcent tries to callback the code where the text came from....the stock app matches the contact to the one I created in my people folder and will call back that number.
This is important because thousands of dollars may be riding on scoring that trip and there are others that are racing to snag it as well. So 1 extra key stroke may be the difference. If I have Handcent, I have to get out of the app and go to my contacts....not acceptable.
I may have a poor 4 day assignment worth only $1500 that I could score a 3 day assignment worth $2500....so not only would I score a grand but I would also get an extra day off.... So you understand why I want this to work. I get the text...I press the contact..I get that option bar and press the phone icon and that bitch is dialing...that is the way I need it to work and the stock app will do it....I haven't found another one that will. I haven't tried G-voice.

There.....WAY more than you wanted to know.

Hmm, I think I'm a little confused. It sounds like Handcent (or any messaging app) syncing to your contacts is the most important thing so you can call back as quickly as possible. I might just be misunderstanding you, but I don't think what you explained above would be affected by GV or VVM would it?

And Matt, you can change all the settings for the notifications. Even if you can't do it in the app, you can go to voice.google.com and change it.

Honestly, I don't really even rely on my phone that much for calls, so my needs are different than some, but I just like the fact that GV is basically zero headache for me when switching from ROM to ROM.

I guess to put it another way....it seems like Handcent calls back the number where the text originated....in my case, it would be trying to call a computer...doesn't work. In the stock app I make a contact that matches the title of the incoming text message from the computer and the stock app sees this and brings them together as one in the same...so when I hit the callback feature....it calls back the number in my contacts folder and not the number where the text originated from....in this case, a computer. Make sense?

Ironically, the Samsung Instinct was best at this. A text would wake up the phone with a popup and I could press that popup and it would be dialing. I seriously considered keeping an Instinct on a second line strictly for this purpose.

I know its not the same... but I started a MIUI Thread (please visit) were I posted a fix for Sprints VVM.... Multiple fixes.. I have reposted this in my CM7 Thread (still going strong) and I can confirm that it works... mine works perfectly!
