Got kitkat compiled and booting. SystemUI is crashing non stop so I can't really do anything but the data connection now comes up as Evdo Rev A now. No more 1x.

nope. Just nothing happens at all. Not even the vibration when you hold the power button to boot up the phone.

Try plugging the phone in without the battery then insert the battery. It worked for me when my elite was acting up
