LA isn't looking so good right now.

What's wrong with those first-rate, top-drawer public colleges and universities in Alabama :D

Nothing at all.

If my kids hadn't spent their entire lives in Alabama, then I would have absolutely NO problem sending them to Alabama Universities.

However, after High School, I spent a number of years in the Marines, and moved about the country quite a bit. I got to know many different kinds of people, and I got to experience many different kinds of things.

I want my kids to experience something different than they would otherwise. I want them to have a cultural experience that will help them grow to be better people.

There really is no other place in the US that has such an extreme cultural diversity as Hawaii. Not only that, but they are also some of the friendliest people on the earth. You can sit at a bus stop with a total stranger and know their entire life story by the time the bus gets there. I can't remember hearing a report of a homicide (I'm sure they happened while I Was there, but they were very rare).

I looked it up, there were only 22 murders in Hawaii for all of 2009. There were 1,972 in California.

That equates to 1.7 murders per 100,000 people in Hawaii, and 5.3 murders per 100,000 in California.

You know... you people have just no idea what it's like to have the small things in life like ELECTRICITY do you?

We have an electricity crisis in SA due to a seriously corrupt and full of shit government that hates all people that are educated... and you people complain about the small things! It makes me angry to see people with soooo much complain about something soooo small!

California has an electricity crisis too... When they need more power they strong-arm the state of Arizona into allowing another generating station be built in the Arizona desert (Not in their back yard).

California (Southern) has a fresh water crisis... To allow the state of Arizona to build the Central Arizona Project, California withheld their support till the State of Arizona agreed to cover any water shortages from the Colorado river (Not in their back yard).

Arizona faces potential water supply shortage from Colorado River by 2011 | content from Western Farm Press

Years ago the states of California and Texas contacted the Federal government complaining about the porous natures of their southern borders. The Fed's built new walls and stationed thousands of border agents along their borders. Now most all of the illegal immigrants and drug runners use the Arizona and New Mexico deserts to make their way into the U.S. Just a week ago yet another Border agent was shot and killed in the Arizona desert by a gang of drug thieves associated with one of the Mexican cartels.

California, other border states shun Arizona’s immigration law

Unfortunately things may get worse with Governor Moonbeam! Now before anyone accuses me of having no right to say this... I was born in California, raised in California, graduated from the Los Angeles Putrified School district, and was a constituent of Governor Moonbeam, his dad Governor Pat Brown, and Governor Reagan. One thing that might make things better this time around will be that Jerry is no longer Linda Ronstadt's boy toy...

Its those tight gun laws thats causing their high murder rate
Hell you cant even buy cruise missiles to keep your house safe there

Well, that explains it! It's harder to get guns in California, but, in Alabama, it's easier, and therefore you can defend yourself, even if it is murder and that must be why the murder rate is higher in Alabama than in California! :D

See, I listen to Michelle Bachmann. ;)

Well, let's compare apples to apples shall we...

2009 CA murder rate 5.3
2009 AL murder rate 6.9
2009 HI murder rate 1.7

Luckily the majority of murders in Alabama are confined to the larger cities, which means the rural areas are generally murder free (there are exceptions).

I followed all of the murders in Montgomery one year... up until we reached 57.

All of the murders were black on black. But none of the murders were committed during a crime.

Every single murder was committed by one 15-25 year old male getting in an argument with another 15-25 year old male, leaving, retrieving a handgun, returning, and killing the person he was arguing with.

It made me feel safer (I'm not a black male...Statistically I'm never getting murdered in Montgomery), but it also made me deeply worried about the mindset that resolves problems this way...

California, of course, has no 15-25 year old males who are also members of minority groups.

If you are deeply worried about the mindset that resolves problems with murder, you must not be a fan of the last president, whose problem-solving involved the murder of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of non-combatant Iraqis.

Oh, and I do want to compliment you on attempting to pin Alabama's horrific murder rate on black youths. We all know that white youths in your state are all outstanding citizens who wouldn't think of committing any crime that interferes with their watching over their meth labs. :D

I have not kept up with California's murders so I could not comment on what the source of the murders in any of California's cities are.

Yep, way to be dishonest. We both know that the deaths of innocent civilians was something US forces have taken great pains (sometimes more successfully than others) to avoid.

I wouldn't call the murder rate horrific, but it was definitely concerning enough to me that I kept up with it for about 10 months.

As far as "pinning" Alabama's murder rate on black youths... That's utterly ridiculous. I simply stated that Montgomery's murders were all black youths of a certain age killing each other. And as far as the racial part of it goes... if all of the murders in a city were committed by one race, and all of them committed for the same reason... don't you think that should be addressed?

There was 1 murder in the nearby town of Prattville that year. It was a white on white murder. I don't remember who shot who, but an argument erupted between a father and son. One retrieved a shotgun (I believe) and killed the other. Very sad. Very sad indeed.

Another one in Wetumpka this year ( I've never kept up with Wetupmka, but this one was ALL over the news). One old guy shot another old guy over a shrubbery. I believe they were both white, but I have no proof of that at the moment.

I've never understood how people start doing Meth. I mean, the combination of Rednecks and science should be enough to warn most people off.

Honestly though, we weren't talking about Meth use, or meth labs. We were talking about Murder.

The only statistics I can tell you from experience is that in 2007, the first 57 murders (which took us into October) that occurred in Montgomery Alabama were committed by young black men as the result of an argument.

That is a fact. That's not a racial bias. That's a community mindset problem that needs to be addressed. If we ignore the fact that the murders were being committed by young black men, then we do them a disservice.
