LA isn't looking so good right now.

My point is precisely that they don't.

And I made it in context of the idea that an overarching value of education is enculturation.

Rating universities implies value - but I think that we best not forget that one component of enculturation is not only accepting foreign cultures and foreign languages, but also remembering to accept the great diversity that is America.

State (fill in the blank) might have great (fill in the blank) but it will always lack this (fill in the blank) component of the great State of (fill in the blank with another state).

I thought that remembering that might level thinking - much as the Senate levels the influence of Congress.

I don't argue with that at all. I definitely know that it's very important to have great diversity, as evidenced by IU itself. Public university in a small part of the Midwest yet with a huge amount of diversity. It's one of the most diverse universities that I know of that accepts people from all walks of life with open arms.

Top schools in CA will definitely not deny "bubbas" who apply for an out-of-state tuition (money, money, money!)... BUT they need to meet the minimum requirements... one of them is to take 2 SAT 2s, which is more of a CA thing, and also meet the very high GPA requirements (hence why there are huge %s of Asians attending those schools). It just all depends on them actually applying.

I don't necessarily think of a bubba as less educated - more like a cultural viewpoint.

I know Ph.D. bubbas from Georgia Tech - and I have a customer in Asia (Chinese guy) who's larger than most guys - he's got their language equivalent as Bubba for a nickname because they know it fits. After hanging with him - I had to agree - he's a bubba.

While I don't doubt that CA will accept bubbas - I think that when they do, perhaps they should be given some sort of foreign ambassador status or something.

They're really more of an exchange, rather than out of state, student anyway.

And who doesn't like a good old bubba? Most are pretty mellow company and most of the ones I've met have been pretty open-minded.

<sigh>

My full response to this entire subject will be to agree to disagree in advance, and nothing more.

Well agree to disagree we shall. But I stand firm.

What? The state of Planet Earth?

Yes - quite possibly that's absolutely correct, from a certain point of view.

Do you get many illegal Mexican aliens in Planet Earth? ;)

I was just poking fun at people who actually think their state is "better". I don't really care and think the argument is absolutely ridiculous. They all have pros and cons and are suited for different types of people.

And no, my state (which shall remain nameless) doesn't really have any illegal Mexicans for the most part. Thank the lord.

I'll stand firm while seated on this one.

I think we're chunking rocks, too, but the exercise is beneficial and fun for some, so there we are.

I live where we do have illegal Mexicans.

Many pay into Social Security, but people scream that we shouldn't give those that pay any benefits - because they're illegal.

I have a problem with that thinking.

We started a program to force them into having driver licenses so they could be held accountable for their time on the road. But then people spoke up that our tax dollars shouldn't pay for that infrastructure - so now they just drive illegally and without accountability again.

I have a problem with that thinking.

No one intelligent or informed would think of trying to cross our southern border in a number of places now, where it was safer before. Attempting to do so will get you killed. However, someone forgot to think through that the system is targeting undereducated and ill-informed people - so, they're dying out there like never before. And a lot of people think they had it coming. As if our border defense should mete out death, rather than deter.

I have a problem with that thinking.

And I listen to the upper class tell me how they're dragging down our schools. And then I hear them complain that they're too dumb to even understand America. And then I watch them hand over their laundry, car washing, gardening and child-rearing to them, because, "Consuela and Manuel are different than those others."

I have a problem with that thinking.

But I do understand the cogent political and economic arguments and the sanctity of our borders and respect for our laws.

I just don't understand them being made by people whose ethnic ties often trace to large illegal immigrant peoples on our eastern seaboard if you go back a few generations.

There's a lot I don't understand about this complex issue.

And, I've made my prejudices on this matter clear. But then, I could be wrong. I often am.

Really? You guys are basing how good/cool your states are based on nobels?

LOL.

And I thought I was a dork! This brings a whole new meaning to nerdom.

I COMPLETELY agree. It's not a good measure at all.

Yeah I agree that a fire suppression system would be a good thing but not if I have to pay $7000.00 for it. Plus they are asking for a two year lease, there is a shop in the same area in a similar building as I will be getting and they do not have a fire sprinkler system and is also owned and managed by the same company.

What kind of printing you guys do ??? I used to own L&S safety glass and we used to manufacture windshields and also print the inside of the windshields ( inside black trim )with some dangerous inks. That was a really good business until NAFTA came along and messed that up.

So now I am a T-Shirt printer making a lot less $$$ but a lot less headaches and stress.

"We" do not do any commercial printing. We develop technology for screen printing on glass and PC Boards.

I once ran a custom lab black and white film processing lab. Since 1890, we dumped daily, lots of spent chemicals containing selenium, silver, gold, and other chemicals into the city sewer system. I am glad the environmental concerns were less in the good old days than they are today.

Luck to you.

jeezus christ on a stick. just like there are better places in the world to live, there are better places in the US frickin' A to live.

Interesting, according to that site... 1 out of every 16 people in California is an illegal immigrant.

to add.. illegal mexicans constitute 15% of the student body AND by law must get in state tuition at college in California.

I think I'll pick another destination..

I won't send my kids to a California College. I refuse to pay out-of-state tuition, when illegal immigrants are getting in-state tuition.

I might send them to UH though. I have fond memories of Oahu, and I think that getting some culture would be a very good thing for them.

Just curious, but what state law, specifically, requires that illegals must get tuition of any sort. Just asking.

What's wrong with those first-rate, top-drawer public colleges and universities in Alabama :D

What a crock. I've lived in SoCal, NorCal, Colorado and Japan, and I've traveled all over the world. San Diego is one of the nicest places on Earth to live. I can't wait to move back.

Can you explain what is it about San Diego that makes it such a terrible place to live? I've spoken with one of my friends who's had an apartment there for 3 years now while studying at UCSD and said that she absolutely loves SD... especially Coronado Beach.

From the times that I've stayed with her, I've had a great time there. It's a beautiful city with lots to do and a very lively atmosphere.

I love SD, especially the Coronado Beach area and, of course, the Del and the Rhinoceros Restaurant. We try to get to SD every year.

My favorite areas of California are SD, Monterey, SF and north of SF. I'd live full-time in any of those areas if it were possible.

California is a great state.
