Root Last minute advice before I flash new rom

nvidia17

Lurker
Hi guys, forgive me if I come across as an absolute n00b, but I would just like to get some last minute guidance before I jump in. I have spent 2 days reading about installing a new custom ROM, and I want to make sure I have covered every avenue. The main reason for doing this is because I do not have enough space on my rom drive to install the applications I need, so I need the A2SD+ capability, I do not require Sense. Apparently Leedroid best fits my needs, unless there are any Gingerbread options that I should consider?

Firstly I have rooted my phone using unrEVOked on my Macbook. That seems to have caused a few errors such as Twitter and Whatsapp crashing as soon as I try to open them, and Google sync presents some errors too. Hopefully these will disappear when I do a full wipe and flash.

Now then, I have backed up as follows:
- Nandroid backup
- SMS messages using SMS backup
- Paid apps using Titanium backup
- and I'm just about to copy my SD card over to my Macbook HD

I think this is the next step, I would like to install Leedroid 2.3d. Have I done all the preparation required, and what considerations should I make in the future after I've installed Leedroid? Are there any gaps that I should have done by now?

Thanks in advance.

You do have a point actually, I just figure Leedroid was the most stable as it seemed to have good feedback. What would you say is the best Gingerbread ROM with ADSD+? I might as well give Gingerbread a go instead of sticking with Froyo.

Well gingervillian and oxygen seems to be the most popular/stable one around at the moment BUT Im not entirely sure if A2SD is available on both of them just wait for SUroot to chime in.

Im not sure if its standard with oxy, or if it needs to be flashed afterwards.

Gingervillain has Dark Tremor a2sd as standard.

To me GV is more "modern" and feature-rich than Oxygen.
Both have A2SD+, but it is not standard in Oxygen (optional via Hboot table flash).

A2SD+ <....> is not standard in Oxygen (optional via Hboot table flash).

Thats completely different to a2sd. A2sd is using an ext partition on SD card and a script to mount /data/app on that ext partition

The Hboot table controls the allocation of space between the mtd partitions (/system, /cache and /data)

If you want to go with Froyo get Defrost 6.1 it has a2sd+ and works perfectly.
If you want Gingerbread go for Gingervillain

Good luck! And enjoy! ;)

If space is yopur main reason for flashing then LeeDroid may still be your best bet as a first rom.

Whatever rom you choose if you want A2SD then you need to partition your SD card before flashing.

Have fun choosing ....then theming.....then re-flashing.....etc

Thanks for the feedback guys. I find that I do not like the Sense feature as it is far too convoluted for my needs; I use the LauncherPro feature on my standard Froyo firmware.

I think I will give GingerVillain a go, as it seems to have a good response judging from the replies; I am keen to try out Gingerbread and leave behind Froyo.

Yeh, my main reason for flashing is due to the Desire's limited ROM space (even after moving all the apps I can to the SD card using the standard App2SD app). So the most important feature for me is simplicity and App2SD+.

You are right, it is not a2sd.
Oxygen had a2sd before, but now they moved away from that solution.

ive you do not like sense then you might aswell flash a 2.3.3 rom like gingervillian
its stable as hell, fast and smooth

I finally flashed to GingerVillain, but I have run into a problem, it hangs at the HTC splash screen and doesn't go any further after I turned my phone off (after I completed the flash) then back on.

Any ideas?

Hi, I finally gave up on GingerVillain as it kept crashing on me; I decided to go with CM7. Problem is, I don't know how to use App2SD+, I was told it would move apps automatically, but I can see a lot of my apps are still in the internal storage.

I downloaded 'Quick System Info' from the market so that I could monitor my drive sizes being used. A2SD storage remains constant at Total: 457MB, Free: 425MB. Internal storage is, Total:3.21GB, Free:3.00GB. Whereas my Internal storage is at 148MB but iwth only 31.10MB.

I have already partitioned my SD card with the ROM manager before I flashed. What am I doing wrong?

try to do partition using gparted than rom manager

found this in cm7 thread:

Q: I have installed a2sd addon but now i get low space warning again, why?
A: by default a2sd addon move only app, this is fine for most user but some user with more application have to move also cache and/or data.
Cache2SD can be enabled with
adb shell
/sd-ext/userinit.d/10cache2sdext-binds enable

Data2SD
adb shell
/sd-ext/userinit.d/11data2sdext-binds enable

reboot when prompted

Thanks everybody for the help, I've finally got it sorted. Took me 5/6 wipes and flashes in the end to finally get the desired outcome!
