installed ROM on rooted phone - NO other hacks or non-market apps installed, just the 2.1 ROM

before hero worked but was sluggish as crap... standard hero
after install hero seemed to have a new upgraded cpu.. super speedy gonzalez

before.. could make and receive phone calls
after.. phone crashes *sometimes* upon incoming call
after.. phone crashes *sometimes* upon making a call or simply locks up

before..browser was most excellent..surf, post to forums, happy camper
after.. bloody touch to zoom crap makes posting to a forum almost impossible..makes most anything other than simple surfing to read impossible... if you are like me and actually use the web to access back office systems that require entering text, selecting links, diving through databases.. then this *update* has made your device useless

This last browser point causes me great fear and trepidation as I was set to purchase three EVOs asap but without a trackball navigating complex nested menus will be impossible if the EVO has the same browser as this Hero update (leak).. rather than selecting links one will simply be zooming and rezooming a page.. clearly the browser is now suited best for simple surfing... I guess I may be in the minority who use the browser for much more.. or pehaps *HOPEFULLY* there is a menu choice to turn that crap off.. pinch to zoom is most excellent.. tap to zoom is horrendous in its implications for our type of work

I am sure they will fix the phone call problems - crashing issues otherwise it could not be called a phone. The browser thing is rather foreboding.

I will have to rollback to the stock version before traveling as I really need at least dependable phone service on the road.. maybe it is simply because I was rooted/ROM rather than the wipe all install? Who knows? But the phone was perfect for both calls and our type of data intensive browsing before the update. (though the dialer was slow as crap and generally sluggish...it worked)

Took the plunge, synced contacts that were initially set as phone only to outlook, the google specific went to my google account. So far so good. I had a problem with BT but this was just my jawbone prime button for volume being messed up. Tested it with a usb bluetooth gateway and was able to stream music through my pc speakers. Noticed that the songs now play one after the other, It never did this with 1.5, or at least, not that I ever noticed. Apps that I couldn't find before are now obviously showing up on the market. I will be picking up a BlueAnt Q1 later today as there have been reports that this allows up to 8 speed dial numbers that you can use with android that allow you to voice dial without touching the phone. Its reported that the unit also allows you to pick up calls as it has voice recognition built in. I need to go through the previous posts and see if its possible to allow live wallpaper. I saw references to this earlier but didn't read closely enough to see if this RUU will allow this with any fixes or of it will just work natively. Some sites that heavily really on flash (justin.tv) for example now works and I can view that site and its streams without a problem. All data for music and images were intact and that's a good thing ( I believe that's how these updates work but that's a guess on my part. The voice dialer seem to still have major flaws as anything you speak into the phone text comes up garbled (phone has a bit of humor built into it for that app at times). Navigation, goggles, seem to work flawlessly so far, wish there was a way of allowing googles voice recognition to work for the voice dial, that and a utility to detect pressing the bluetooth button and you would be able to do total hands free voicedial with anyone in your contacts, that would make the phone truly awesome when driving.

I was one of the reluctant phans so I waited a few days as I read the posts, but people here did an awesome job with feedback and I'm not regretting this one bit.

Can anyone else comment on these findings? If these browser (and call problems) are widespread, it could explain the delay in the official 2.1 release. I know it has caused me to hesitate even more to jumping in with both feet to the ROOT, ROM, RUU pool. Yes, there are some minor issues with my unrooted Android 1.5 Sprint Hero, and yes, I am anxious for the update, but, as spaziod said, IT WORKS as it is, and works well!

I am happy to report that I have ran the RUU 5 times in the past 5 days, and everytime has gone smooth and the end results each time has been a perfectly functioning phone, until I start screwing with it!

The reason I have ran the RUU so many times is because I am working on a BT fix that has plagued every 2.XX ROM that I have tried!

Just as a side note all the me2u69 guy is me, I was banned for a misunderstanding!

Even though I had rooted before and was running Fresh 2.0d, I used the RUU. No regrets here.

Phone calls come in perfect, go out perfect. Voice mail works perfect, phone is fast and completely responsive. I don't use bluetooth so I can't comment on that. However I can say that browsing the web has not become any less useful or fun, it just works great.

I am thinking that his browser has defaulted to overview view, as I know most 2.1 I have installed have done that, if you open browser and go to setting uncheck open new page in overview (this is the first time I heard someone complaining about the browser, but again it could be what he is using it for, so no offense don't take his word for it)!
As for the phone call audio, it is really hit or miss and there are numerous fixes posted on XDA for this, there are even a few people that have the problem on 1.5 roms as well!
I have still not come up with an answer to some of the crazy problems that some people have with all these exact same phones!
The only thing I can come up with is they were all built by hand in china, and not on a production line to exacting specs like they were supposed to be:D

Who knows man

For those of us sitting on the edge, undecided about jumping into the ROOT, ROM, RUU pool, would someone mind making a clear concise post showing the differences and benefits/negatives between Fresh 2.0d and the leaked Sprint 2.1? I know I, for one, would be very greatful! And I suspect there are others as well. THANKS!

A lot of it is personal preference! I have done all the mods, hack, tweaks, and when it comes down to it no Dev has any proof that there Rom is better, or faster than the next, other than the pretty BS that they build into them! Flipzmode did a benchmark to all the Roms out and even included 1.5 and guess what it was right in there with the other and even beat the others in some category's.
So basically the only difference is a lot of those Roms is they now have live wallpapers running, which again to me is more of a gimmick than anything!

So again for me to do the 2.1 RUU I just wanted something that worked 100% of the time, without all the BS that Dev put into it! Being the Rom comes rooted I can still do most rooted thing and download apps made for rooted phones.

Anything else you need just ask!

Edit:
Here is the page to the benchmark!

I was thinking the same thing but maybe not.... thanks! Roman G. did not know about the overview thing..yes, it was checked so maybe that will fix the problem...

I am thinking about reinstalling with the RUU version to see if that helps... someone remind me... why do I need a rooted phone? What benefit is there over the RUU 2.1? Other than just tinkering.. are there some apps I can run that have not been enabled by the 2.1 update?

No problem... I hope it fixes your problems, if not then it sure will make browsing a lot easier!

well after you install the RUU you can root your phone again, and take all the sprint crap, as for the market, there is a fix for it already, so yea all the apps should run!!

HESITANTLY, i installed the 2.1 RUU and am likeing everything so far! the call audio is a little low, and the most annoying thing is that when i click the "phone" icon, it gives me my phone contacts as well as facebook contacts too. does anyone have a fix for removing facebook contacts? Its annoying to me and hopefully, its something minor im overlooking. Otherwise, im very pleased with the pre-update!

Edit: my cotacts under the "phone" folder that has a facebood account does not show their fb pictures. When i try to "link" the contact to fb, it shows two seperate contacts with the same name and photo, and not all of my friends are there.
