Out of curiosity, why did you switch from Moto Droid to the Droid Eris?

Uhh, Google Navigation? I started relying on it with my Moto Droid for business trips. I've seriously missed and have had a much harder time going back to paper.
Everyone has their reasons, and in my opinion this 2.1 leak, whatever build it is, is more than stable enough to use everyday AND is MUCH improved than 1.5.

I just didn't like how big it was. The form factor was far more appealing for me.

Ah apparently for those of you who decided to go ahead and upgrade to the leaked android 2.1.... once the OTA is officially released you wont be receiving it

Lol, I'm going to go out on a limb here and make an assumption. Anyone that hasn't installed the leaked 2.1 is also someone not interested in root.
With that being said, even if that article WAS true, I could careless because root would be far more important to me.
*And if root doesn't happen, I'll be switching to the N1 anyway. Seriously people this leaked update isn't some mystery file that will brick your phone. It's legit, it works, has very few bugs, and blows 1.5 straight out of the water.

Not true at all the devs are very sure that 1.5 is not being rooted and a leaked 2.1 is more likely to have exploits as well vs. OTA 2.1

Actually, it's 100% speculation.
Here's likely how it will work.... There will be an update check that compares the installed version on the phone to the "official" version ready to be pushed. If it's LOWER in version number, it will push it. Could they make it do something like "if s/w # = xxx, update" ? Yeah, they could ... and we'd be in deep sh*t. What is it more likely to do ? "if s/w <= 2.26.605.2, update". Reason being, the version they'll eventually push will be 2.26.605.3 or higher.

I figure if I can't perform the OTA update since I did the manual update, I could always head over to the Personal Communications Devices website and see if I can manually update like I did with the MR1 and MR2 updates...
And if that doesn't work - I'm sure there will be a way to update. I rather have root anyway

I would root my phone in a second in order to move my apps to the sd card. I'm not at all interested in the leaked 2.1. I can wait for the OTA. My phone is working great right now. I just took the screen protector off and it's like a new phone!

That post is no less speculation than the article.
Actually, his is much less speculation because his explanation is the way the vast majority of updates work. Updates just check for lesser versions, that's it. If there is a lower version, it updates. If not, it doesn't. If it has the same version, it does nothing.

My "there is no reason to install this leaked version" is in reference to the fact that an update is being prepared for release via OTA and will be coming to our devices before the end of Q1.
It's fun to be the first on the block to have something everybody wants, but not a rogue version thereof, in my opinion. And now there is an article speculating that those of you installing this leaked version may not be able to accept the OTA and may have to find another way to update your Eris.
It's worth the wait, if it is as good as some of you are saying.

I guess my only quirk was how you stated that there is absolutely no reason to do this update. I have a 4 hour business trip to Baltimore this Monday and this leaked 2.1 couldn't have come at a better time. So for me, personally, Google Navigation was worth it because of my needs for travel. Could I have used paper maps on Monday? I guess, but since I use to own the Moto Droid, I already know how amazing Google Nav is, and this is something I have been drooling over to come to the Eris.
Alright, point taken. I'm jealous of your new phone though! I never used a screen protector and dropped mine on the road getting out of my car. I've come to terms with my scratched up Eris now though. It adds character.

Poor wording on my part, perhaps. A qualifier would have suited my meaning more.
My meaning is that there is absolutely no reason to do this update. But a qualifier could have been, "if you want to be more certain that you are protecting the integrity of the device."
People with discovered reasons for liking the update would have discovered those things with the OTA, so it's about impatience, not about the relative merits of this leaked version.

Are there likely to be new "patched" versions of this rom to address any bugs? Or is this likely to be a final/last flashable 2.1?
More importantly (to me):
Does Verizon tend to supply a downloadable version of their OTAs users can flash if they want (and therefore we could use to replace the leaked version if we so choose) once the update is "official"?

Considering all the "This doesn't work" "That is missing" threads, you can't honestly say
There may not be much wrong, but there are admittedly things wrong with the leak.
Not sure how much longer I can with, though. Woke up this morning to an update icon
