It's all about conditioning IMO. Had all the apps started off around $10 bucks when I first started shopping around, I probably wouldn't think twice about the ones that cost that. But as my conditioning has gone, an app that costs $3.50 seems like a lot to me.
I guess I just think people should rely a little less on the knee-jerk reaction and a little more on thinking about the value of something.
I paid $30 for a birding application (and I'm not even a serious birder). Probably in the top 5% most expensive apps on the market, at a guess? If you want to follow the knee-jerk reaction to it, that's absolutely outrageous and unacceptable.
On the other hand, I got the equivalent data and pictures of an entire stack of bird books, a set of rich media like bird calls and photos that are not even available in books, and a ridiculously comprehensive set of search algorithms that no physical media could ever provide. $300 worth of bird books
might cover this data without even providing me the rich media, and that doesn't even take into account the convenience of having it in my pocket. So did I get screwed because it's an expensive app, or did I get a ridiculous bargain?
Same with the LED flashing. How much is not touching your phone worth? What if you can ignore the Gmail indicator because you know it's not hiding a voicemail indicator? All of the little things add up. I spend a lot of time with technology and it's valuable for me to have one little extra way to detach myself from it.
I'm not saying it's worth it to everyone, just pointing out that there are lots of ways to value things, and we shouldn't be so quick to reject a few bucks here or there for things that are very useful. I'm sure a lot of us waste money daily on less useful and less lasting things. I know I do. That bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel I had this morning was more expensive than Launcher Pro Plus, and when tomorrow rolls around, I won't be thinking of how good that sandwich was, but I will still be using the features of LPP. Not, of course, that we should be foregoing bacon for apps in any situation
