Let's talk about the battery

Not w/out root. You can with a computer. It's a pain though. Some people have had some luck with certain screenshot apps on certain models. Hit and miss though

So running nav and streaming radio over the internet draining your battery quicker than it can charge baffles you? You have two apps continually downloading from the net as well as the gps radio chugging away. You expect the phone to actually increase its charge while using both?

{for those wondering why I returned the charge the screen is beautiful but it def gets laggy and battery life was beyond terrible, I was using gps and tune in radio app and it was plugged in car charging and battery went from 88 to 83 in a 3 hr trip. Yes the battery went down plugged in! D3 is great Keyboard is amazing and didnt have a problem with pentile at all not even in DX2 cause its the first display not to fade out in the sun.! So my problem with the D3 and its bad and getting worse with each new android release on verizon, they seriously have to stop loading the phones with the CRAP APPS!!! theres nothing like getting a new cell and upon powering it on you see that verizon filled your first 3 pages in the app folder with crap apps. I mean is their a petition we can sign or anything.?! Its seriously the only thing I liked about iphone is no bloat! The droid 3 is great and is the best 3G and imo best cell on VZW at the moment.

im just nervous that every year we get a new droid and currently its D3 means 3 pages of apps d4 comes with 4 pages of crap apps. Stopppp Verizon!

forget unlocked bootloaders! unlock the damn apps and let us delete!!!

well ill be honest i know gps drains battery fast and i wasnt expecting phone to charge but its the first time ive ever seen a battery drop while plugged in so i was definitely surprised. i just thought id never see that. it was probably the first time something like a dual micro usb port creeped into my head for charging. haha i mean verizon makes a car charger that you can also use a usb to charge and why not use both to charge these phones in half the time? I would! haha

patent pending*

Sorry, Apple probably already own that patent.

Different brand chargers have different power outputs (and can vary within the brand considerably too)

A 500 mAh (output) wall charger will do worse than a 1000 mAh car charger, and if they are USB-type, different USB cables affect charging.

GPS use and mapping + pandora-radio-streaming = high drain activities, so you will probably get a 500mAh / weak / cheaper / ebay-junk charger not refilling as fast as you drain the battery.

My wife's orig-gen-droid1 can charge (slowly) on 500 mAh but my old phone (LG-Ally) cannot. Of the 10-or-so USB-type chargers we have lying around, and the 15-or-so USB-to-microUSB cables, almost *any* combination works with her OG droid and few work efficiently with my old Ally ...

test via :
1: do your consistent-known-run (pref at least 20-30 min) starting from a full-charged phone and no charger ...
go into mainScreen -> settings -> about -> status -> observe Battery level %
turn phone off, do drive, turn phone on, check % # and record the start% - the end % somewhere
(if you received any calls, discard this run)
2: do the run again, no charger, GPS alone ... record % diff
3: do the run again, no charger, pandora-radio alone
4: do the run again, no charger, pandora && GPS
now you can test your chargers and see how well each does ...
redo only the last step and check comparatives

Mine was at 90% after 12 hours, so I definitely believe it.

Jesus christ, how are you people getting these battery lives?

Mine lasted a little over 13 hours before getting the to last 5%, and that was with GSM Off, GPS off, 3G off, connected to Wifi, light texting, and snapping a few photos here and there.

I thought THAT was pretty good, but after seeing these posts, I don't even. What in the world.

What are you getting for idle time?

Ranges 20% to 30% last checked. In regards to battery life, I do not see much point in comparing to anyone, since depends on actual usage time of apps, brightness, strength of signal, what radios being used, etc.

No offense to folks, but without relative standards for comparison, battery life is only relative to your own use of devices.

Lol that's nothing.. just wait until we have root. This is what I was able to do with my Droid X with proper tweaking:

I'm positive I'll be able to do the same with the Droid 3 once we gain root.

I just plugged my phone in about 20 min. ago. I'll charge it up overnight and then report tomorrow based on its battery stats. In general, the phone is lasting me 12-14 hours before it goes to 20% battery remaining or less. I don't make a lot of voice call, don't do e-mail, surf the Web for maybe 30 min., play about an hour or so of MathDoku (becoming addicting), do txt msg for 30 min., Wi-Fi on for 3-4 hours, BT rarely on, and that's about it.

Some of you folks are starting to sound like Butters :)

Anyhoo, I go the extedned battery and like how the back cover protects the camera lense/flash. Doe not add much size to the device and the extra couple hours is appreicated.

not sure if something is currently wrong or not but i've had my phone off the charger for about 6 hours and its still reporting at 100% this is with some fairly heavy use, i watched some netflix on it streamed some music and sent quite a few texts. i've tried restarting the phone but its still saying 100%, i do have the extended battery and i've had the phone since last thursday and have not seen that kind of life

With 13 hours on battery, I'm down to 40% remaining. I made a couple short phone calls, surfed the Web for about 20 min., played a game for about an hour, texted for about 30 min., watched 5 min. of videos, ran Wi-Fi for a couple hours, didn't run BT. When I click on the batter for details, it breaks down the power hogs as:

Cell standby: 39%
Phone idle: 29%
GPS Status: 10%
Display: 10%
Wi-Fi: 5%
Android Systems: 3%
Voice calls: 3%
Maps: 2%
Android OS: 2%

... In general, the phone is lasting me 12-14 hours before it goes to 20% battery remaining or less. .

That's pretty close to my experience after four days playing with mine, and that's similar to the lifespan I'd been getting with my stock D1.

In general, I think - subjectively, I admit - with GSM off and my usual settings on the power widget, I'm getting a LITTLE better battery life than on the D1. I'm pretty sure the GPS is a ton better on battery - I experimented with a golf GPS program this evening that always killed my D1 within 8 holes, but this time got nine in and an extra couple hours of casual surfing/emailing/playing with the new "toy" (wife's term).

Turn the screen off while using GPS and it should charge. Just listen for the directions or turn on the screen once in a while.

Alternatively, you might be able to keep the screen on, but keep it out of the sun or turn the brightness all the way down.

Don't understand all this anal whining about the battery. A battery is going to last however long it's going to last with each individual user. If it needs charged well, plug it in. Of course one should turn off unused radios however, when I need GPS or WI-FI, on they go & when the battery gets low I charge it. The first day, my battery lasted about 5 hours but with each day the charge is lasting longer & now it lasts about 3/4 of a day.

Or buy the extended battery ;)

With the extended battery I hit 50% after 17 hours

You want some real fun, wait for the Bionic threads. Will no doubt be pure popcorn munchin' entertaining stuff :)

Droid 3 with stock battery has better battery life than my Inc or the DX2, so it is at least better than those devices. I now have the extended battery and like how the new cover provides a sliver of space for protection of the camera.

That' something I'll look into if the standard battery doesn't last long enough. Wonder if the extended battery fits into the Moto car & multimedia docks?docks

I hear they fit with the case on and the case fits with the battery in so it should be fine.
