LG Ally Update Coming January 17th?

I was digging for more information last night after I took my guess at "MR" meaning maintenance release, and all I could find was a lot of echoes of LG support's Feb 2011 anticipated release for 2.2. In the process, I happened to notice they list "refurbished" LG Allys on Verizon's customer website (for free with a contract). I would think the only way they would be inclined to do that is if they had a lot of them to unload which had been returned for various reasons. Sort of makes me nervous about the potential longevity of my Ally.
 
You know what makes me angry...the Mytouch 3G which has a 528mhz processor is in the process of getting Froyo and I think we are going to get hosed by Verizon/LG. I bet this nothing more that another add bloatware update.

Meh, it was exactly what it was supposed to be: An entry-level smart phone. For those people who never owned a smart phone before.
 
Well, if you count all prior Windows Mobile "smartphones" as "never owning a smartphone before" then, yes, I would be included in that analysis. I admit the Ally isn't state of the art, but it runs RINGS around the WM phones I had before it, even simply in reliability and user options. I picked it specifically for what it had at the time, and to get the heck away from 4 years of aggravation with WM.

I am happy to say that I succeeded! The Ally is a great little phone. Sure, it isn't the 'best', but I still really like mine. :)

Yeah, I don't count any WinMo phone as a smart phone :lol: But, yeah, the Ally was meant to be an entry level device, so to speak.
 
I did look at some of the better Android phones Verizon had at the time, some with 1GHz cpus. But they didn't have a qwerty thumb board, and I just don't like on-screen keyboards. So at the time the Ally hit all my check boxes for what I wanted. A faster CPU would surely be nice, but I won't give up a keyboard just to get it. I am glad to see that some of the newer more advanced Android phones being advertised still have keyboards.

Yeah, the keyboard is what sold me on the Ally (Well, the $20 price tag too :) ). None of the other Android phones I saw at the store had a keyboard, and I didn't even think about paying $400 for the Droid X (I couldn't fathom using it as a media center and all that jazz).

Heck, I wasn't even sure I wanted a smart phone (I hated my Treo 780w), but fell in love with it in about 45 minutes.

Pretty much same story for me. The ally, in my opinion, underpowered or not, is still a great phone, especially for those who hadn't had a smartphone prior (like me). Keyboard was a must have for me as well, and I totally fell in love woth the ally's keyboard. I love how its absolutely perfect for playing ol' games via emulation ~ gotta love that directional pad!
 
My only keyboard complaint is wishing they had not put the Home button where they did. I keep accidentally pressing it when usiing the backspace to correct typos (which means often).

LG provides it to Verizon who tests it, possibly does modifications (I'm not sure about that one---they may simply ask for modifications if they need them made) and then pushes it out.
 
I got an update this morning, and it was a POS!!! All I saw that was new was City ID. When I saw the "android" logo going across the screen my heart broke and I was po'ed. I have been stuck with Stock ROM all day and am not liking it at all. Wifi didn't work, had to uninstall all my programs and reinstall them, then I had to figure out how to turn off the standard utilities and use the ones I prefer....UGH!!!!! Not happy @ all.
 
Sounds like the after-effects of a typical MR update. Every one of them since the very first has somehow messed up something on my Ally that I had to fix. After the first one I had to do a hard reset and start completely over to get the Ally working again.
 
How do i get my phone rooted again??????

All my efforts result in nothing and when i flip to Ubuntu i keep getting "permission denied" when I try to push asroot.......PLEASE HELP!!@!@!@!@!@!@
 
Yay!!! I got it. I guess it helps that I have another ally in the house that was working just fine!!! I just took the sd card out of that one and was able to get into recovery and perform a Restore off of the backup file. Then I just had to do a few extra things, but finally went from Aloha (1.1?) to .4 in about 2 hours !!!!!

Aloha? I am confused. Isn't Aloha another name for the Amon-RA Recovery version we are using? Shouldn't an OTA update show up as 2.1.x on the Ally?
 
I'd really like to see the OEM Froyo released so our awesome community devs can make it even better. I guess I'll keep checking back to see if anyone with a non-rooted phone gets a big OTA update.
