Help LG Esteem Data Connection/Metro rudeness

Freyii

Newbie
Hello all, first of all I'd like to thank everyone on this forum as many of the existing threads have helped me with rooting my phone and getting apps to help it run smoothly, now let me tell you the horror story about obtaining my Esteem.

When I first got the phone it was awesome but after about 3 hours of use it slowed down to a crawl. The media player even overwhelmed my phone. I assumed I got a bad phone so I went to Metro to return it, they told me I had to wait and they said they'd have one in tomorrow. The next day, my mom calls before we leave and they say that they have some in stock. We get there, tell them it's for an exchange and oh what do you know, they don't have them anymore. They direct us to a corporate store. I get to the store, and all of the sudden they don't have them either. We wait for this "Shipment" that apparently didn't exist. Oh and not to mention the lady at the corporate store was a total bitch and factory reset my phone without even warning me to back up my contacts real quick, my mom took down her name and we went back to complain and what do you know? "No one by that name works here mam," wtf? Alright so about 3 days go by and I go to the corporate store.... Once again they ran out. At this point I am getting very irritated because its apparent THEY ARE TRYING TO RUN MY 30 DAYS UP. After about 5 visits to my local metroPCS and 3 visits to a corporate store I finally get a new phone. Not to mention one of the times I was in a local store the guy I was with was on speaker phone and the person he was talking to told him specifically to take it off of speaker. Shady or what?

Oh wait scratch that, the douche at the store just gave me a refurbished one. No box, no charger, nothing... Didn't even look at the receipt. Once again I go to complain to a different corporate store because the phone they gave me was actually worse than the first one. They tell me they have to reproduce the problem (Which wasn't doable as the data-problems only happened randomly, not to mention the problem was reproduced at 2 metro stores prior to this visit)

This is when I say "**** it I'm rooting my phone,"

So since then the phone has been AMAZING, very fast, got rid of all the bloatware and that pesky metroPCS start up animation we all hate so much. The battery life has also improved tenfold. My problem is my data just randomly doesn't work still.

So here's my question... Is there any way I could fix this without going to a metroPCS store? I'm switching services regardless after this phone but I'd still like to use the thing for at least a half of a year or so it isn't a total waste of money.

I have tried a few things and it's still pretty spotty. Even when the 4g symbol is green I occasionally cannot get access to data.

Halp before I go ragemode ):

Hi and welcome to AF and i'm glad you join us, now about the data, you can try airplane mode for a minute than disable it, but mostly it depends on the coverage area you are in, but one more thing have you updated the roaming list PRL, cause when you buy the phone prl 3018 is install and thats old, try dailing *228 and option 5 to download the latest roaming list and if you want to try out other PRL's we have them here also, keep us updated with issues.;)

What area are you in? My metro store is in california north hollywood. If I'm in your area let me know and I'll take care of you. Sorry you went through this experience with the corporate and lesser Dealer. We take care of our customers here with uber Customer Service.

I will try that. Thank you (: I am in the Metro Detroit area, I hardly ever get 1x unless I'm under a bridge or in a basement.

Sadly I am in the Detroit area otherwise I would take you up on that offer. Every person I've dealt with here has been either totally clueless or a total asshole.

Update: I tried the *225 method and it updated my roaming list so there is a good chance this was the problem. I will return after work to update.

yeah updating PRL is essential with new phones and before traveling accross states. or traveling in the usa for that matter. Refreshing the services might make the signal stronger as well.. it's the solution to most network side issues for the past 4 years i've experienced with MetroPCS

i don't recommend doing that...

@Nuttmeg thanks for the warm welcome :)

I've been with MetroPCS for almost five years now. My experience is this:

MetroPCS stores -- especially those so-called "corporate stores" -- are rude and, worst of all, dishonest and deceitful.

Before I bought LG Esteem, I specifically called MetroPCS customer service and asked if I would be charged me for transferring to and activating a new phone. MetroPCS said no.

When I arrived at a "corporate store", the store salespersons insisted on charging me $10 for transferring to/activating the new phone. I had already waited for almost an hour to be served, and I wanted to go home with LG Esteem, so I did not argue with them.

Atop of that, the store tried to charge another extra $10 per month for adding on the unlimited Rhapsody music service. That is $60 plus another $10, totaled $70, for the unlimited full-feature plan plus Rhapsody. I remembered MetroPCS was offering 90-day Rhapsody free trial with a new android phone (with the $50 plan,) and I remembered reading that the $60 full-feature plan already included unlimited Rhapsody. I talked to the store manager, and he insisted that I was wrong. I just declined Rhapsody and stayed with my $50 plan.

(I tried to look for some literature in the store so I could show the manager; unfortunately everything was in Spanish, and I do not speak or read a freaking word of Spanish. That freaking "corporate store" has nothing in English. Everything was in Spanish.)

When I got home with the new phone, I called the MetroPCS customer service again. I asked about the $10 transfer free and the $10 extra charge for Rhapsody. MetroPCS told me that I could have called them to transfer/activate the phone for free, so the store lied to me. MetroPCS also confirmed that I was right and the store manager was wrong: the new phone came with the 90-day Rhapsody free trial, and the $60 plan already include unlimited Rhapsody.

I stayed with the $50 plan, but MetroPCS agreed to give me the free Rhapsody for 90 days; unfortunately, but MetroPCS could not refund the $10 phone transfer/activation fee (I asked for a refund) because MetroPCS said that those so-called "corporate stores" actually operate independently and were not under the corporate's administration or jurisdiction. Corporate store my arse.

Worst of all, those idiots at the MetroPCS store somehow activated my phone incorrectly, and I was not getting 4G speed. I ended up having to call MetroPCS again to reactivate it. So those assholes charged me $10 for doing basically nothing and lying.

Oh, when I was ready to mail out my $100 rebate, I discovered that the corporate store did not give me the original receipt for the purchase! They gave me a photocopy. I could use a photocopy of the photocopy for the rebate. I conjectured that the store kept the original receipt so I can't return, refund or exchange the phone. That is just seriously dishonest.

That was not my first bad experience with MetroPCS corporate stores. I have been to three different corporate stores in Los Angeles, and they were all shady. And I won't have to wait for about an hour in a corporate store to get served. What I've learned: NEVER buy anything from those MetroPCS stores again. Just order the phone from MetroPCS directly, and activate it over the air.

P.S. the corporate store I went to was the one on 5056 Whittier Blvd in East Los Angeles, California.

Unfortunately the store manager WAS wrong. 90 day free rhapsody is included for all new android models. This includes the esteem, Though rhapsody is added on to the 60 dollar unlimited 4g LTE plan thus making it 70 AFTER the 90 day period. There's where that store manager failed.

I know this sounds like common sense, but not everyone might pick up on that, so I'm trying to help. ;)

The monthly pricing was the part of the misinformation the store manager gave me. You do NOT pay $60 + $10 = $70 to get Rhapsody. The $60 plan already includes everything, all the features, that MetroPCS offer. That means people who have the $60 plan do NOT have to pay another $10 to get unlimited Rhapsody. The $60 plan already includes Rhapsody.

Here, look at the plan: Cell Phone Plans with No Contract | Compare Cell Phone Plans & Features | MetroPCS

The benefit of the $60 is that you get everything in the $50 (i.e., the unlimited voice/data/4G) plus a bunch of extra premium features, which include limited Rhapsody.

You can pay $10 a month to Rhapsody to get the unlimited service - with or without MetroPCS or any phone service. Many premium on-demand music services charge about $10 a month for unlimited streaming and download. Rhapsody is actually a lousy service compared to the alternatives/competitors like Pandora One and Rdio.

Why would anyone pay an extra $10 a month to MeroPCS/Rhapsody for a sub-standard music streaming service? You might as well shop around and pay $10 for another music service that is far superior. However, the benefit of the $60 plan is that you would get Rhapsody plus other premium features from MetroPCS. That is how getting unlimited Rhapsody with MetroPCS works out to be cheaper than the alternatives if you get the $60 total package.

Oh LIMITED Rhapsody, I thought we were talking unlimited. My miss-understanding sorry.

Oh LIMITED Rhapsody, I thought we were talking unlimited. My miss-understanding sorry.
No, the $60 plan already includes Rhapsody UNLIMITED.

I'm just going to guide you through this step-by-step.

1. Click on the I just gave you. Here it is again: Cell Phone Plans with No Contract | Compare Cell Phone Plans & Features | MetroPCS

The link will bring you to the MetroPCS webpage that compares all available plans and their features.

2. Now, look at the table. The plan we have been discussing is the one in the rightmost column in the table. That is the column for the "4G Phone Required" $60 plan.

3. Scroll down and look at the last row. That row says "Rhapsody Unlimited Music". The last cell in the table (last column and last row) has a little orange music note symbol, i.e., the quaver.

4. Now scroll down and check the legend for the little orange quaver. It says:

"This symbol applies to Rhapsody Unlimited Music plan only and applies to Android phones only. It does not apply to the $60 BlackBerry plan. "

Do you see? Obviously we are in the LG Esteem forum, which is an Android phone.

The $60 4G plan already includes Rhapsody Unlimted. That is UNLIMITED, not limited. Already included. In the $60 plan. Got it?

Say, you wouldn't happen to work at the MetroPCS corporate store on Whittier in East L.A., would you?

No I've already posted which store I work at, The symbol may show but it's implying that you can add it on. I'm looking directly in the system options for plans and on the i60 it does not show Rhapsody at all. The box for the rhapsody check to add it on to it is grey'd out on the i50. So to my knowledge the system to which show's us the features and services does not show rhapsody on the i60 alone. Though it wouldn't be the first time the website was wrong about details. The esteem DOESN'T have 8gig internal memory :)

In addition to the website, I have called and spoken to MetroPCS customer service, and ask them about the $60 plan a couple times. MetroPCS customer service and the official MetroPCS website are not mistaken. You are.

But hey, if you want to rip $10 off people for a service that should have already been included in the plan, people should just call MetroPCS directly -- because MetroPCS is certainly willing to include Rhapsody Unlimited into the $60 plan, as it is clearly stated on the official webpage on plans and pricing. That is why I do not want to deal with any MetroPCS store.

And why did a "corporate store" charge current customers $10 for transferring their phones? MetroPCS said it's FREE-OF-CHARGE for current customers to transfer from an old phone to a new one. Explain that. Wasn't a "corporate store" supposed to follow corporate policies on pricing??

Anyway, my experiences with the MetroPCS corporate stores is that they've been far too shady, dishonest, deceitful and misleading for me to trust them on anything.

I don't know everything but what I do know, is that MetroPCS has to abide by what they advertise. If they advertise the Rhapsody with-in the i60 you can call corporate directly and have them make it so. Though from their classes they do weekly for dealers they make us add it as a 10 dollar feature on the account. Thus is why it's under the feature menu for 10 dollars.

I'm sorry you feel cheated and lied to by the corporate store, but I don't cheat and lie to my customers.

As for the 10 dollar transfer fee, I ONLY charge a 10 dollar UPGRADE fee, which I'm supposed to charge. other than that I don't charge anything for porting over a number or activating a phone.

Not sure what all the confusion is about. It clearly states on their website $60 Unlimited 4G with Rhapsody unlimited or Metro On-Demand.

The link is right here.
Metro Plans

Well it's good to know there's decent people working for metro but I'm afraid I will not be giving you my number and password. No offense, but I have absolutely no validation that you work for metro and even if you do it's still risky, plus I could probably just go to my local metro and make them do it. I just have to yell a lot, it seems. In addition the that I pretty much told you my phone is rooted so yeah, I have a feeling if I tell you my number my service is just going to be terminated.

Anyways, my data is still not working when it should be. I can make calls, send texts, I have signal... The 4g is grayed out sometimes (Totally random at this point, it seems) and I cannot access data. Sometimes the 4g is even green and I wont get data. (Up and down arrows both gray, occasionally the up one goes on for a second) and it will just randomly decide to start working again. I'm growing pretty frustrated with this phone and I'm going to take this b.s. to the media pretty soon (Moms sister works for a local news station)... Looks like Metro is pretty corrupt.

I don't know what the deal is here... Everything about Metro just seems a little more shady to me after reading this thread.

Any more help is much obliged. (:

Consider this: people do not have need to be a MetroPCS customer or go through MetroPCS to get Rhapsody Unlimited for $10. $10 is the regular price to get Rhapsody Unlimited. You can go directly to Rhapsody's website and subscribe the $10 plan. Here is Rhapsody's subscription pricing listed at the official website: Rhapsody :: Subscription Music Service: Listen All You Want: Millions of Songs: Rhapsody

If MetroPCS charged an additional $10 for Rhapsody Unlimited, then we would have no absolute no benefit to get Rhapsody Unlimited from MetroPCS at all.In fact, it would be cheaper to just get Rhapsody Unlimited (or Premier) directly from Rhapsody instead of going through MetroPCS. It would be $1-cent cheaper as MetroPCS would charge $10 while Rhapsody charged $9.99.

Most importantly, Rhapsody Unlimited is not that good a music service. $10 for Rhapsody Unlimited is a terrible deal. Rhapsody's Android app is awkward, clumsy and difficult to use, and a horribly broken search function. Rhapsody itself is missing too many artists, albums and tracks. (i.e., Rhapsody does not even have Christina Perri's Jars of Heart or Flo Rida's Club Can't Handle Me, which a lot of other music streaming services carry.)

For $10, people can (and should) get another better music streaming service like Pandora One or Rdio, which has a far superior Android app and a bigger music library. For MetroPCS customers, the only redeeming thing about Rhapsody Unlimited is that it is already included in the $60 plan. It just absolutely makes no sense for MetroPCS to charge an additional $10 for Rhapsody Unlimited.

I'd tell you what I and everyone should do if MetroPCS charges $10 for Rhapsody Unlimited: get something else instead, like Pandora One or Rdio, which is so much better than Rhapsody for about the same price.

BTW, I did called MetroPCS directly to inquire about the $60 monthly plan and what features were included in the plan. I called twice. I asked two different customer service agents if the $60 plan covered unlimited music streaming and download with Rhapsody. Both agents gave me an affirmative YES. That is the only redeeming thing about Rhapsody Unlimited on MetroPCS: people do not have to pay another $10 for a premium music streaming service. It is already included in the monthly plan.

As for the 10 dollar transfer fee, I ONLY charge a 10 dollar UPGRADE fee, which I'm supposed to charge. other than that I don't charge anything for porting over a number or activating a phone.
That is ridiculous and untrue. What "upgrade" fee were you talking about??

Upgrading the monthly plan? Upgrading from the $40 to $50 plan or $50 to $60 plan? There is NEVER a fee for upgrading plan. I've called MetroPCS to change my monthly plan -- both upgrading and downgrading, and MetroPCS has never changed me a fee for changing my monthly plan. In fact, no carrier ever charges a fee for upgrading monthly plan.

Upgrading my phone? Upgrading from an old one to a new one? MetroPCS customer service already told me that I should not have to pay the $10 for upgrading my old Samsung Code to LG Esteem, but the corporate store charged me $10 for it. That is basically just transferring my phone. I could have called into MetroPCS, and they would have activated/transferred my phone for free.

Upgrading a feature? I've called MetroPCS many times to add and remove features, (like unlimited international calling,) and MetroPCS has never changed me any fee for adding/removing features.

What other type of "upgrade" is there? Define what your "upgrade" means.
