LG esteem video recording quality: frame rate problem?

I've looked at a bunch of "720p" recordings others have posted on youtube, and while looking at something still the picture looks great, but when things start moving around it seems like they are a little off somehow compared to videos I have taken at VGA resolution with my Optimus m.

Metro PCS LG Esteem test - YouTube

Here's an example: Whatever is wrong is more pronounced in full screen.

This is only a slightly accurate example. Things that are moving faster than people walking look off as well.

Also, when someone moves the camera around something looks wrong with the picture then as well.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? Video quality is very important to me in my next phone purchase, as I upload a lot of videos to the internet and record a lot of home movies with my phone.

if you have your own videos you've taken with the Esteem, could you link to them whether or they confirm or deny what I am perceiving?

I see that same issue with all the videos posted on the Esteem and thats not good specially for those that love to take fast paced videos. One video in particular was the one Shino posted where he explained the Esteems GPS and before the video ended he was at his job showing how good the camera look as he was filming some of the games in his store.

Wonder if this has something to do with the fact that the camera can only record at 15 frames per second in 720p mode? If you drop it down to VGA the framerate is higher

Looks like I'll be waiting a few more months for the next 4g phone.

Too bad because I really liked what I saw from the Esteem, minus the horrible video.

What a deal breaker.

Is there a way to "hack" the phone's video settings to record at a higher fps? Or is that a hardware issue?

Just a shot in the dark here as I havent gotten this phone YET, so not sure whether or its a hardware issue or not, but has anyone tried a camera app from the market yet and does it resolve the issue possibly with changing recording settings..

Can't believe your decision on whether or not to get this overall great phone comes down to video recording framerate. LOL

And no, this is a hardware limitation as far as I know

EDIT: The manual and specs all say that the camera is capable of 720p @ 30 fps, but it doesn't look like 30 fps at all to me whenever I record at that resolution, and the last professional review I read on the Esteem said its video quality looked more like "slighty jerky 15fps" so that's where my figure is coming from. Have not tried another camera app yet as suggested above to see if it's possible to get a higher framerate with different software, cause honestly, I don't care.

I also heard that there is a OS limitation on changing video recording settings such as frame rate, but there are setting such as the size and video quality that of course can be changed.

I tested a quick recording on 720 and I was moving around and filmed a tree and a tall plant that was moving in the wind, I see no problem but then again, I am not expecting too much since its a phone with camera. Looked ok to me....

-saw your video, maybe I will go drive around and go on the highway to see how it looks there...

In this day and age cell phone cameras should have high expectations, especially for "smart" phones.

I know I'm going to catch a lot of flack for what im about to say but we all know is the true. The best CAmera is the Iphone 4 and 4S . This film maker took his iphone and made a movie with it. The day that Metro ask one of their phone makers partners to seller then a phone with a camera like that that will be the day were you could be proud to say your smartphone had arrive at the holy grail. heres the film called: Apple of my eyes
APPLE OF MY EYE - iPhone 4 film / movie (shot and edited) - includes behind the scenes - YouTube

shot and edited on an Iphone 4

Yeah, the iPhone 4s video quality is by far the best. Have you seen the macro mode during video capture?

iPhone 4S Macro Video Recording Test 1080p HD Back-Facing Camera *RAW FOOTAGE* - YouTube

Amazing. Watch in 1080p.

Yes I did my friend and also saw the iphone 4S live demo of the 1080p movie and i was like Dang we need something like this. Too bad Metro will never carry the iphone 4 or 4s. I just hope Metro will wise up and get an iphone. Before anybody bashes me the more great phones Metro get the more great great android phones they will carry.

Is it me, or does this video seem like it's better quality than the video for the Esteem.

This is from the LG revolution. Supposedly it's the same phone as the Esteem but judging from this the video camera on the Revolution is better.

This second video will show you MUCH more clearly that the Revolution has a better camera than the Esteem. Cars driving past the camera are SMOOTH.

Who are they trying to fool? Same phone? Sounds like a load of BS to me.

Remember, this is a Metro phone. I know that's a lame excuse, but it's a fact. We're dealing with a low cost provider...and honestly, it took them over 2 years to finally get a smartphone that has as much functionality and features as the Esteem does, and I've been with Metro since the beginning. So from my perspective, this is still a damn good phone for a carrier like Metro...I mean for them to release a phone with HDMI output is insane to me. In spite of the fact that its 720p isn't stellar...and the camera can't zoom when recording videos...screen isn't AMOLED....and there's no artificial intelligence called Siri I can talk with...still a great phone. If little things like camera frame rate are important factors you need to take into account when buying a phone, then you probably need a high end smartphone from AT&T or Verizon...but you have to pay to play with those carriers

I agree with everything you said. On a side note, we don't have siri but, there is vlingo and Eva. Not really on the same level but Android has had this type of thing for a while now.

I understand your grip with the stuff we posted about Metro. Dont get me wrong i like metro because they are fighting to carve another notch on the telco pole and the more notches the more choices for us consumers. I just wish Metro was a GSM carrier :(. but oh well

Dont get me wrong guys i do plan to get the Esteem since my samsung piece of crap aka indulge is irking me to no end. This phone is getting ship off once i get the money for the Esteem ASAP

Correct but still to mature more in order to be at is greatest. I just wish the maturing process was quicker so we can do like AT&T's talk and surf at the sametime,Minus the AT&T prices :D

I do not know why so many people gripe about this, it's not like you're looking at your phone when it is up to your ear. Although if Metro decides to offer LTE voice and data in the future you will be able to do this. Currently their 4G phones use a dual-band radio, it has to switch off LTE to do AWS and switch off AWS to do LTE.

umm Redhook Buddy..I do look at my phone when i talk and i can thank dr Dre for that :D lol. Yes in the future thats why i said "i wish the maturation process was quicker"

So you're one of those "phone yellers" that annoys most people in public. Here's a tip, talk into your phone like a normal person, nobody cares to hear your conversation.

I don't yell into my phone thanks to my beat headset(it has a mic on the line)

ok here is the low down on the VIDEO for the LG ESTEEM.

has very nice frames, on youtube its not 720 couse they are uploading video straight from the phone and it only uploads at the LOWEST SETTING! whitch is qcif 176x144
you have to upload 720 video from the phone thrugh the computer!

now the thing about all the video on the phone from qcif to hd is that there is some kind of DELAY IN THE VIDEO AND AUDIO. it does not sync all the way or something. ill post videos of my test. you can try this on your phone, record a video of yourself slaping or hitting your chest. it will be very easy to see that you hear the slap just a split second AFTER you see it in the video! now its easy to resynce latter in video editing software but, im trying to figure out how to fix the sync problem!

thats the problem with the video! and if it looks ''choppy'' you need to make shure your micro sd card is a class 6 or better. i have a class 10 in mine and its better than the built in card on the phone!
