LG Optimus 2X / P990 Reviews and Videos

One of the reviews above (I can't remember which) stated there's no 4G support. I really do hope that's wrong, it seems like such a waste for a phone like this to not support it :(
I'm on T-Mobile right now and my contract is up in March, I'm praying this thing will see a state-side release soon!

Keep in mind that all the current reviews are based off of global versions of the phone, none of which have 4g. The US version is going to have 4g. It is also why there are some reviews with ATT sims and some with Tmobile sims.

That bloatware complaint sounds pretty scary ^^ Well, I hope the 2.3 update will ship soon enough, otherwise, sweet root+tibackup madness :)
The wifi issue concerns me more - surely must be faulty. Still 3 stars for such a great device seems a bit harsh without any promise of a later re-test.

Too right. :D
Some of the issues sound like some of the negative things droidbee13 was complaining about in the Rooting threat. Maybe there a couple of test phones out in the wild that don't represent the final release. One member from Korea in another thread says the only weak point is the camera? Time will tell.

I can upgrade next week - I'm still tempted to get the Nexus S with the software benefits that come with it, but am forcing myself to wait till next month as I'm sure I might regret it otherwise!

Hold your nerve. You can do it.
Delayed gratification is allways worth the wait.

I have a friend who buckled and went for a for a Nexus a couple of weeks ago but he's going to sell it when the 2X hits the streets, not because its a bad device but much better is just round the corner.

You, me and Cazman should start a support group. LOL Its going to be a long time until release. If you pardon the expression.:D

count me in on that ^^ I hope the phone gets released before my old contract expires, I can't imagine living without a working mobile phone ^^"

I really like the form factor of the Nexus S along with the appeal of vanilla Android, hackability and the NFC thingy - I just hope rooting will turn out to be easy on the Optimus and that there will be some dev support - I just don't think we can rely on LG to deliver 2.3 in the near future, let alone anything after that. I'm holding out though:D

That's what she said..no wait that's what I said! And the wait today is ok compared to how it was yesterday, and to be perfectly honest if a dual core HTC comes out while I'm waiting for my contract to arrive I'll go for that one, since I've heard their good with updates and have a strong developer community for their current phones.

Good to know, that didn't even cross my mind :p

Agreed HTC have a good dev community, but it has not been my experience over the last 18 months that they are good with updates. Their Sense skinning has seemed to be a big obstacle to their delivery of updates and their broken promises have caused a lot of bad feeling.
TBH I think if updates are a major concern then the Nexus S is the only way to go - If I thought LG would be as bad as HTC with updates I would not be waiting for the optimus 2x.

I really like this phone, but a few things let it down, 512Mb Memory, battery, 4" screen and screen resolution. I think users especially with galaxy s are looking for something better.

No doubt, that if you already own a Galaxy S, there is little to no reason to upgrade at the moment.

On your thoughts about RAM, on another thread I posted sort of an explanation, why not every phone nowadays ships with 1GB of RAM.

Feel free to read it:

I understand it will use more power but I still want more memory in my next phone than 512Mb, even 768Mb would be nice.

This can easily be offset with larger battery and or a more power efficient screen or CPU.

Then I'm afraid the Optimus 2x is nothing for you. As I said, I see your point, since you wish to upgrade from a Galaxy S which in itsself is already a very powerful phone. Me, having to upgrade in March, and coming from a Nokia 5800 simply see no better choice at that point.

But we're getting offtopic here, this thread is for reviews and videos after all.

Gesture controls look very interesting. They might need to refine the cursor one to just tilt left/right, up/down instead of tapping the phone. Or adjust the sensitivity of the tapping.

I REALLY like the UI on this phone!!!

Yes me too, but as you say some refinement needed. Good use of the gyroscope etc. I particularly liked way the album art in the previous video the way it tilts and pans is very engaging. :)

A VERY comprehensive review from AnandTech. Lots of detailed info to digest.:)

LG Optimus 2X & NVIDIA Tegra 2 Review: The First Dual-Core Smartphone - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

Please read the whole review, but for those of you too impatient:

Conclusion:
The 2X is somewhat of a dichotomy. On one side, you've got moderately aesthetically pleasing hardware, class-leading performance from Tegra 2 that doesn't sacrifice battery life at the stake, and a bunch of notable and useful extras like HDMI mirroring. On the other, you've got some serious experience-killing instability issues (which need to be fixed by launch), a relatively mundane baseband launching at a time when we're on the cusp of 4G, and perhaps most notably a host of even better-specced Tegra 2 based smartphones with more RAM, better screens, and 4G slated to arrive very soon.
It's really frustrating for me to have to make all those qualifications before talking about how much I like the 2X, because the 2X is without a doubt the best Android phone I've used to date. Android is finally fast enough that for a lot of the tasks I care about (especially web browsing) it's appreciably faster than the iPhone 4. At the same time, battery doesn't take a gigantic hit, and the IPS display is awesome. The software instability issues (which are admittedly pre-launch bugs) are the only thing holding me back from using it 24/7. How the 2X fares when Gingerbread gets ported to it will also make a huge difference, one we're going to cover when that time comes.
