Root LG Optimus GT540 ADB?

Lurker
Hello,

I am quite new to rooting and I think I am starting to get my head around it, I am getting a LG Optimus GT540 next month and I am going to root it. Now I have been reading these instructions and it asks me about ADB. What is ADB? What is connecting via ADB? Do I need to be able to use ADB for rooting the device and for using the device after rooted?

Here is the link I have been using: modaco.com/topic/310737-how-to-root-your-lg-gt540/

Thanks again
Thom

Hello and welcome to Android Forums, Tom! :)

You'll get the best help with rooting your GT540 (Optimus) here. And if you real through the stickies at the top of the forum it might provide you additional insight.

What is ADB? What is connecting via ADB?

ADB is the Android Debug Bridge. That may be a bit too technical so just think of it as a terminal able to send commands to an android device.

So if I am going to root my phone do I need to understand ABD and be able to use it? What happens if I cant use it and root my phone?

Which version of Android will you be you running? If you notice, the post you referenced was from June 2010 and may not be applicable to later versions of Android.

I wouldn't worry about knowing a whole lot about adb, it's relatively simple to use. All you need really is a reliable root method for the version of Android on that device. There is potential for problems if you try a method for an earlier version on a more recent one.

It might be best until you actually have the phone in your hands to get familiar with the rooting method.

With android 1.6 you don't even need to use adb. There are several one-click root methods available. Try this explained here. While it states in the thread it's for 2.1 I do believe it works with 1.6 as well. If not you can try this.

While you don't need ADB established in the system path of your PC to root your phone, a lot of cool utility's for your phone require the adb.exe.

If you ever want to set up ADB on your PC, go here: New pre-packaged ADB installation This takes 10 min max and is 100% fool proof. This is so easy I managed to do it with out the video (new addition) when I was a new member.
If you get a CWMod recovery installed then you can use the QtADB utility which has been greatly improved by "nijel". It can be found here:http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/517758-playing-qtadb.html#post4093175 This will allow you to do so many things, but I don't have near the time to post all of them.
