LG Optimus One: Gingerbread Update Starts Rolling Out

In spite of the promise that LG was going to update all these phones to 2.3, Metro is choosing to "end of life" (EOL) this Optimus M in July -- just as LG is rolling out the update to all carriers in July. :rolleyes:

This means Metro will stop selling the Optimus M (their first Android phone) only 9 months after launching it. This also means that Metro doesn't have to mess with giving this Gingerbread update to all their customers. Not so coincidentally, Metro is starting to sell the Samung Admire, an Optimus-like Android with 2.3.

What this really says is rather than let you upgrade your phone to a newer operating system which would make it "like new", Metro expects you to BUY a new phone with the newer operating system. :mad:

LG could still make this 2.3 update available on the Optimus M page on the LG website, just like they made 2.2.1 available there. But if Metro is not selling it anymore, LG may not feel the need to do so. We'll see.

Cricket which sells an almost identical version of this phone (even with AWS band) will definitely get the LG 2.3 update. So, we may have to depend upon the kindness of ROM developers to adapt it for our Metro phones -- if Metro and LG won't give it to us.

Yeah, but just be hopeful, because like you said LG did say they would update the Optimus One phones, which includes the M...regardless of whether or not it is retired. It would certainly make LG look bad if they dont roll it out.

Yes, but our phones CAME with 2.2 (Froyo). We want 2.3 (Gingerbread).

Ascend updating to 2.2 just means they finally caught up to where we've always been. Oh, but we still have TWICE the amount of RAM, so we're still winning! :D

I think he's confusing 2.2 with 2.3... :confused:
 
Well if metro doesn't wanna give us the update, I say screw 'em! There's enough competent developers here and enough more people learning about Android that I think as soon as we can get a hold of real source code, we'll eventually manage to make it work for us.

I've decided that Metro PCS is like WalMart, in the sense that they are the deep-discount business model for cell phone service. I don't have anything against WalMart, I just don't expect super customer service from them. :p Just gimme my low prices and f-off, right? lol

I would LOVE to switch to Cricket if they were in this area. I'm in north Texas, and the closest I'm aware of is down in the Houston area. I could make a roadtrip down to Houston, get a Houston phone number since long distance hardly matters anymore anyway, and come back here. Too bad I can't afford to do such things right now. Cricket's coverage map is about like Metro's I think, except: THEY HAVE 3G! It's a contract w/Sprint I think that's good for whatever's left of the 5 years they agreed to.
