Root Lg Optimus V development thread

asadullah

Android Enthusiast
This thread is for discussion on development of the optimus.
So far we have root, custom recovery and stock rom. One thing that people have confirmed is that roms from the sprint version of the optimus work as well (not surprising at all). I've got another way to root which will basically make it possible to root the phones when gingerbread is released. Thing is I need to have diag functions which virgin has pretty much shut down...but I think that flashing a sprint rom will fix that.

Diag mode guide
I'm writing this kinda brief but here goes.
first off I am rooted and have a custom recovery which you need.
plug your phone in and then run the lg usb drivers. If you only get like four drivers reboot your phone while plugged in. You'll get around 9 drivers. I then rebooted my computer. Once that's complete then reboot into recovery. it'll install all the drivers again. This time though it'll show you com 12, com13 and two other coms. I used com 12 but it may be different for you. Open up qpst and then select add new port it won't show you anything until you uncheck: show serial usb/qc diagnostic ports only. Select the port you think it is then click okay. It will add the new port and say surf as the link if not then you selected the wrong port.

For the masses, if and when the phone gets rooted or if there's any mistakes made while this phone is being tinkered with this should set you back straight.

I present the LG Optimus V Downgrader. Why call it a downgrader when there's nothing to downgrade from yet? I dunno but I do know this should take your phones back to an "out of the box" state if any type of modifications render your phone inoperable.

Nevermind, not working at the moment. May return at a later date.

Okay we've got root
now to perfect it

We do? Well you guys might but I don't, but I do, but I got root on the Optimus M, and you guys got root on the V, but the V and the M are different and I can only root 2.2, you guys can root 2.2.1 apparently. *mubbles under breath "lucky bitches"*

Anyway my downgrader will officially be of use to someone for sure now. :p

LG Optimus V Downgrader

To use this, follow these directions:

Unpack it to the root of your C: drive

Remove any instance of any previous LG Updater from your PC. Do this by going to C:\Program Data\LGMOBILEAX\B2C_Client and then clicking on the file B2CAppUninstall.exe

Then delete the folder LGMOBILEAX

Install the USB drivers if you don't have them already

Plug the phone into any USB port on the back of your PC. Not the front ones

Turn off your phone and take out the microsd card

Turn phone back on

Connect your phone with the USB

Make sure you have your phone in USB debugging mode by going to Settings/Applications/Development and tapping on USB debugging

From the root of C: Run KP500-Utils-EN.exe

Press the letter J on your keyboard and press enter

Type "LGVM670" without the quotes for Phone Model and press enter

Type VM670ZV4_13.S4_13.P61007.cab and press enter

Type VM670ZV4_13 for the Version and press enter

The updater in my package will open up and probably complain that the phone is not connected. Just click restart and the program will continue.

Allow the program to do it's thing. Your phone eventually should reboot with a screen that says it's upgrading.

Wait until the downgrade is complete and the phone reboots. Do not unplug your phone until the program asks you to exit.

Your phone will stay on the android animation for a while and then it will start looping the animation. This happened to me, but don't panic. Wait about 4 or 5 minutes while it's looping.

After that take the battery out. It's the only way to turn the phone off.

Press and hold the "Power/Lock", "Home" and "Volume down" buttons down and wait until the little droid dude and progress bar appears. Then release the buttons. This is a factory reset.

Then wait. Phone will start up and animation will take a while till it gets to the Welcome screen.

Great Job. Nice to have a fall back.

I think the Optimus S custom recovery located here should work :
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221382-custom-recovery-optimus-s-thunderc-sprint.html

I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I'll test when I get home from work.

You think it will but it probably won't. It wouldn't on the M, it would load fine but none of the buttons were mapped properly so you could only go down the menu with the Volume Up button, rendering it useless. There's now a recovery for the M based on the one for the S.

Ah gotcha. I haven't tried flashing it yet. I do however have permanent root without downgrading or anything else like that.

If someone can get me boot and recovery dumps and a mtd partition layout and confirm if it uses usb gadget or usb function drivers I'll have a recovery for it same day.

I'm sure asadullah could because he said he has root but didn't explain how he got it in the first place.

Just got the LG Optimus V (VM670). Running Android 2.2.1. I'd like to start experimenting with the phone, but want to back up the original configuration first.

Has anyone tried to root via the instructions here?

Edit:
I am backed up, rooted, running superuser, titanium backup, and have installed custom recovery.
Root instructions verified by me personally here.
