I just got my first smart phone yesterday, and I'm feeling pretty stupid. I can't even get the phone to stay on. It's fully charged. I press the power button, the home screen comes on for 2 seconds, then the screen goes black. It will power back on if I press the button again, but the same thing happens every time. LG support has frustrated me further by not listening.. they keep telling me to go into settings. I keep telling them the screen doesn't stay on long enough to do that. Can anyone please help?

Help LG Optimus V For Dummies PLEASE!

Well, either just ignore,or get used to the feeling stupid thing. Otherwise, you'll just be stuck.
I'll assume you got an Optimus V, and assume that what's happening is you're dealing with the lock screen. When you first turn the phone on, you have to press the lock icon on the screen and still pressing it swipe all the way to the right to unlock the screen- otherwise it will power down again.
If you're successful at that, press thesettings Menu hard key-- the first one on the left.
[fixed]Select Settings, then select Display. I don't remember what the default, out of the box setting was-- I would recommend changing it- at least for now- to 10 minutes. Don't worry yet about battery life-- you need the screen to stay on long enough while you're learning the phone to be able to read through a thread post or tutorial. You want to be able to follow along, without dealing with the screen timer every time you read a paragraph.
The next thing I've always done with any new phone is just go thorough the menus and settings. Don't change anything-- just go through them to learn where they are and what they do-- use the hard back key - the third from the left-to go back each time.
If it isn't evident-- and it often won't be- remember-- Google, and the forums- is your friend.

The one thing that helped me when I got my first Android was reading the user manual. I read it, and read it, and read it. And when I thought I couldn't read anymore, I read it again. Most, if not all, of your questions can be answered from reading that manual.
The second thing I did was read forums based on my phone. The best feature on any forum is the search feature... nine times out of ten there will always be someone who's already asked the same question(s) I wanna ask.
Third thing I did was install a new launcher. I recommend Launcher Pro Plus. The main feature I love most is being able to hide apps in the app drawer. Hide all the ones you don't use. This makes finding the ones you do use that much quicker.... like the Settings.

half-round boxes on either side of the screen. The one on the left has a green lock in it, and the one on the right has a speaker in it.
Take your finger and swipe the one on the left (with the lock in it) toward the center. This unlocks the screen and you can now play with your phone. When you stop fooling with your phone, after a period of time (I think it defaults to 30 seconds) it will go black and lock again, so get comfortable with this action as you will be doing it a lot.
Pulling the box on the right side will silence the phone quickly. Useful when you are heading into Mass, a meeting or a restaurant. If you have your ringer and notifications set to vibrate as well as ring, this is useful, because it doesn't turn off the radios and you can tell when you get a call or text.

Are you sure your unlocking the phone? Pull the bar to from left to right and it will unlock if not you might have a defective phone.

Something else to consider: take it back to the point of purchase and have them physically show you how to operate the phone(at lest well enough to go into menu/settings/location and security),unless you purchased it online, then maybe go to Best Buy they seem to be pretty helpful.That should get you by until you can learn more about you "V" through reading your manual and these threads.Unless it's broken, then get a new one and have them show you how to use that one
