Help LGMobile Support Tool

I have a VM Optimus running Froyo. I downloaded and installed the LGMobile Support Tool a month or so ago, and now see that Gingerbread is available (software version VM670ZV5).

Has anyone installed it this way? To success? I can't even get past the "Please Connect Your Phone" stage, even though the phone is connected via the supplied USB cable.

And do I really want to do this? I am curious if my WiFi Hotspot will still work, I love that thing (using the Quick Settings app). My employer's internet policy is really strict, and the proxy server and WebSense make using the internet a lesson in frustration. I just hook my laptop's wireless connection to the phone and I have unlimited (albeit a little pokey) access.

This is not possible, any kind of an OS upgrade would have to come from VM not LG.

This update tool would be used for firmware upgrades or fixes to the hardware in the phone,you will not be able to update an OS this way only the provider of the service can distribute an OS upgrade,unless you want to go the custom ROM route.
 
Ah ok...so thatd be for like if there was a problem with like the radio on the phones? Idk if thats a good example, but basically for bugs n stuff that lg caused, not VM. Right?

You are incorrect. Android software stack updates can come from the carrier, the phone manufacturer, or in the case of Nexus phones, Google itself.

Certain (most?) Samsung Android phones (except the Nexus S) are updated via Samsung provided PC client software called Kies. Here's a link to an official T-Mobile page that explicitly states that the Android 2.2 update will not come over the air from T-Mobile, the customer must connect their phone to a PC via USB and use the Samsung Mini Kies client software. Also note that in some markets, the UK for example, it is common to just buy an unsubsidized, full-price, unlocked smartphone of your choice from any store, then buy a SIM card from whatever mobile network operator you want. There is no contract and the phone's software does not have any carrier customizations. The phone's software updates come directly from the manufacturer, often using manufacturer provided PC client software. The carrier isn't involved in the software updates because the carrier didn't have anything to do with the phone in the first place.

The "bugs" could be in the basic Android OS (Google's fault), or the bug could be related to modifications made by the manufacturer (LG's fault) or the carrier (Sprint/VM's fault).

All U.S. carriers work with phone manufacturers to modify the Android OS to suit the carrier's wishes. For example, T-Mobile phones that are referred to as "stock" Android still have some applications added at the factory that are not part of truly stock Android and are specific to T-Mobile. Google Nexus phones are (to the best of my knowledge) the only phones Americans can buy that are stock Android with -nothing- added beyond what Google releases.

A software update could be doing any number of things: improving phone performance (making the user interface scroll more smoothly for example), it could fix a bug (phone crashes in some unusual situation, for example), it could be "hiding" a menu item (like WiFi hotspot), it could be completely disabling a functionality (like WiFi hotspot or tethering or whatever) or it could be upgrading the Android OS (from 2.2 to 2.3, for example).

I have read other reports in the past from people who couldn't get the LG update tool to even recognize that their Optimus V is attached to the PC. (It doesn't work for me either. I tried just for the heck of it even though there was no update available at the time.)

I haven't seen any release notes or any documentation that describes what the ZV5 release will do, so I wouldn't be in a hurry to download it. In another forum at least one user claimed that this update disabled USB tethering, but I'll believe that for sure if I read a bunch of people reporting the same thing. My phone works fine on the ZV4 software release, so I'm not "upgrading" until I see some documentation that describes what the ZV5 release changes. (Plus, as I've mentioned before, I can't even get the LG update tool to connect to my phone, so I couldn't update if I wanted to!)
 
Yeah I didn't plan on trying to use that upgrade (it didn't even show up last time I checked lol. I'm just waiting for 2.3, Ive used tethering once (to show off to my sister who later showed me up with a galaxy s phone) so I don't mind if its completely disabled.

Me too.

I don't know what is in this update, but it isn't Android 2.3. LG has publicly committed to offering a 2.3 update for the Optimus One and its many variants, but LG has not given a date on when 2.3 will be released for any of the variants.

I don't want to spread rumors, so I just want to reenforce that I don't know if the update will block tethering or not, that's just speculation by others. For all we know at this point, the update could make the phone shoot laser beams and bake chocolate chip cookies.
 
Ummm I Need Answers To This TO!!! Uggh But I Got mine to connect and i can succesfully update it but im scraed because i i dont know what itll do.. FYI to get the thing to recognize it you need to put it in this "Special" type of Debu Mode that can only be accessed with your Service Code (SPC Code) and i know how to get it.. Don't bother with the update - if you look at the firmware it is going to install, it is the same as what is currently on the phone, Version 4.

Too much risk for apparently no benefit, since VM's Android platform is (relatively) clean.
 
If your Rooted Don't Update. You might just loose the ability to ever root that phone again.

If you really want to update the firmware to the zv5 so bad that you would leave 5 or is it 6 posts throughout these two subforum,I say go to here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...el-rom-change-boot-animation.html#post3000366 and install a custom recvovery,make a back up of your system in the recovery mode(under backup and restore section),and go for it. Then tell us all about it.You might find it wasn't worth all that trouble. But if your just dying to find out then at least be smart and backup your system.
 
VM670ZV5 isn't Gingerbread, its Android 2.2.2 instead of the 2.2.1 that the first Optimus V units came out with. It is a bit snappier than 2.2.1 and seems to have slightly better battery life. An Optimus V with firmware VM670ZV5 can not be rooted via SuperOneClick, you have to use Gingerbreak.

I hated 2.2.2 compared to 2.2.1. because they screwed around with the call screen. :( Other than a few minor changes to the menu and other small things I cannot remember off the top of my head, there was no difference between the two that I could tell (nothing snappier, and no difference in battery life).

Not saying these are bad things, just saying I think everyone's mileage may vary in experience between the two. :)

And they diabled wifi hotspot, so if that is important to you don't upgrade.
 
Dont Worry The Update Was Fake Or SOmething I DId it and It Downloaded but in the end it said error blah blah blah the update expired or something like that.. and to get your phone recognized you have to put it in this special debug mode that you need your spc code (Servie Code) Well guess what I Know How To Get anyones Spc Code(Service Code) Heres How: First Log in to your virgin mobile account as you normally do then go to this link https://www1.virginmobileusa.com/myaccount/login.dofsdf and it shows you all types of information on your account/Phone and security codes you have to search for it but its there trust me and its not labeled as Spc Code or Service Code it simply says MSL:****** which is the same thing... When you get your six digit code go the phone dialer and type in ##7678# and enter the MSL Code/Spc Code/ Service COde there the same thing Hope this helps with programming and stuff oh and then click debug and the phone gets recognized by the lg tool this even lets it get recognized on Easy CDMA Havent tried on Easy CDMa Or BItPIm.. MAybe This Can Help WIth SOme Useful HAcking :)
