Root Link2SD and you (a tutorial)

Got it to work by using Astro to browse the phone's internal memory and deleting or doing something with vending.apk. Not really sure what I did but thanks to you MacFett!!

I have all three of these apps on my phone:

Link2SD
App2SD
Titanium Backup

It appears to me that there is some overlap of which program does what.

Should I keep them all or more specifically, how should I look at each one? I mean what role should each play?

I have Link2SD set to automatically link newly downloaded apps and that seems to work well but is that the same as moving them? Can an app you linked then get moved?

I first got turned on to Link2SD based on reading that it could link Maps (for example) to the uSD and save phone memory. I have that app linked but when I linked it I can't say I saw my phone's internal memory increase.

If an app is "linked" can it also be "moved to sd" as Link2 SD would suggest?

I'm just throwing these questions out there and hopefully more people other than myself can learn from any answers. Thanks!

All of a sudden today, I can't link the apk's. Dalvik cache and lib files link, but I keep getting "error 22" when I try to link the apk. I tired "recreate mount script" to see if maybe that would help, and it told me my second partition wasn't mounted-except it is, because the other files link fine and all my apps/widgets work fine. There is plenty of room on my second partition(1.39gb in fact) and I tired rebooting with no success. Any ideas?

I had to reflash doing a full wipe/format. Did you just update the rom your on

Use titanium for backup not moving and dont use app2SD.

man, I was hoping you weren't gonna say that...meh. No, I didn't just update, but I did flash a font pack...I'm guessing that might have done it? I hope not, because I really like changing the font.

When I wipe and reflash, do I have to wipe my partition too? again, I hope not, cuz thats an ordeal. I can't partition from minitool for some reason (get error messages, see previous posts) so I have to partition with CWM recovery, then change the partition to ext4 with minitool.....and I would really prefer not to do that again, since I have to back up my whole sdcard before partitioning with CWM, then move everything back to the card and it takes forever.

Select wipe/format in the main menu of your recovery then when you start link select ext4 then restore your apps with titanium if your set to auto link it will catch most but if our doing batch restore you will have to manually link some.

Not sure if this was a Link2SD update, or I just never noticed it, but it now has a freeze and thaw option. I have App Quarantine and used it to freeze apps, but I just noticed that Link2SD shows those as "Frozen". It seems to work well in Link2SD, so I assume I don't really need App Quarantine. Just wondering if I froze something in one app, should I thaw it in another?

Guys, two questions:
I have a 32 gig card in my Desire. I was wondering if there is much reason to make the extra primary partition much bigger than 2 gig

Hi all,

I love this tutorial, thanks so much!

I'm a total n00b, just rooted my LG Optimus V according to this website's handy instructions, then I installed Link2SD. It works great, again closely following the instructions and using MiniTool Part. Wizard.

It's been working great, I have 100+ apps with still tons of internal memory.

But the other day when downloading an app, I got an error when trying to link the file to SD: "create link.com.skyfire.browser: cannot create /data/sdtext2/(etc): read-only file system" This MIGHT have occurred after installing AVG Antivirus App (can't tell, maybe related, I've since removed it just in case).

Hmm, read-only file system. Turns out now I can't link anything using Link2SD now. So, question #1: Anyone know where I went wrong, and how to fix it?

On a related note, when first starting with Link2SD I didn't know what I was doing (I still don't!), and I had to reformat my SD card a few times. Each time it was a giant PITA relinking everything. I used Titanium Backup, but all it did was reinstall the apps, but with so many apps, then couldn't all fit in internal memory for me to move over. That is, it didn't install the apps to the SD card. And it didn't rebuild any links. So, question #2: Am I using Titanium Backup wrong?

Thanks for any and all tips for these two questions.

Best,
Oy.

Did you just flash a rom? As for titanium set link2sd to auto link, it will miss some but not much, before you restore. Titanium doesn't restore the link just the app.

You can not link system apps. They have no effect on your internal space anyway if they come pre installed. Updates can but with the exception of maps don't take much space.

Rooted phone a couple weeks ago with the latest Backside ROM.

I had all user apps moved to the SD card before I even knew about Link2SD and I had about 109 MB of free internal storage. Now with everything linked with Link2SD, I have the same amount of free internal storage. It seems I either did something wrong or I was already linked somehow?

I'm a little confused. What exactly did I accomplish by partitioning and using Link2SD if I have the same amount of internal storage before and after?

So my phone sometimes randomly crashes and then when I try to reboot it gets stuck on the boot screen.. sometimes I can just keep taking out the battery and trying to reboot until it works again. This last time I downloaded a couple of apps and it crashed, and now it gets stuck on the boot screen and won't load at all unless I take the memory card out, and then everything is all screwed up cause I have link2sd, and I don't know what's wrong or how to fix it! Anyone here know what it could be? Like.. is it a link2sd thing, or maybe some reaction btw link2sd and my rom? Maybe my sd card is a POS? Any suggestions or information would be appreciated! Thank you :)

LG Optimus V
Rooted; Harmonia rom (1.3?)
SD card partitioned, both FAT32
almost everything linked w/ link2sd

If there is any other important information you need to know please ask!

I have the exact same problem, and it's exceptionally annoying, to the point where I don't know if I can continue using Link2SD.

I am using an LG Optimus V, rooted of course, but with the factory ROM shipped from LG and Virgin Mobile. I have to use FAT 32 for my SD partitions, the phone won't work with any other file system (I tried ext2-4). I'm using a 16 GB sd card fresh from Amazon, a quality one from a quality vendor.

The phone, upon boot, will just cycle and cycle and cycle up, at the gray/white "android" screen...and SOMETIMES it comes out of the cycle (maybe after 30-60 seconds) and boots fine. Sometimes, however, you have to eject the SD card to get the phone to work (for it will stay stuck like that all night). Just taking out the battery doesn't do it, you have to eject the SD card. But then my links are invalid, and the ONLY way to get link2sd working again is to reformat the second partition using my PC. I haven't had to touch the larger, 14GB partition, just the 2GB one I allocated to link2sd.

Now I'm a total n00b, and really don't know what the heck I'm doing, but I followed the instructions here carefully and rooted my phone, and freed up TONS of memory so I can use all the apps I want using link2sd. Just killer thread, here, comrades, thanks a million.

But now every time I have to reboot my phone (either from a crash, or if the wifi gets gummed up while travelling...for whatever reasons), I have to hold my breath and pray. More often than not the phone will be useless now, till I reformat the second partition again and rebuild my links. You can imagine the hassle.

If anyone has any tips for a) fixing this problem, or even b) helping recover my phone and it's link2sd capabilities without having to reformat the second partition...I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

The only things I can think of is faulty cards or faulty card reader on the phone. I've heard a few cases of faulty readers.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I really don't know anything about sd cards...I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard per the instructions here...does it have any capabilities to determine if my card is bad? If not, are there any other ways of detecting so? I sure hope it's the card; I don't want to have to deal with trying to return the phone to Amazon.

Two quick questions for this thread:

1) What is the difference between Create Link and Move to SD Card in the Actions list?

2) Why 2000 mb's? I have an 8GB card. Do I really need that much space on the second partition?

Two quick questions for this thread:

Create link fools the app into thinking it is installed in the internal memory, where as with Move to SD the app knows it's installed on the SD card.

Not really, it's just a nice round number that will give you plenty of room. Feel free to experiment if you feel that number is too large.

I noticed that Link2SD requires some sort of partition on the SD card. I didn't know how to do this, but I was in my Xionia Recovery CWMA 1.2518.4 earlier and noticed that it can partition the card. Is this the same sort of partition, and is that how I would create it?

thanks

I'm wondering the same thing. If it's that easy, I'll just go into my custom recovery and partition the card.

Depends on what Rom your using if your on stock it has to be done on pc because it has to be fat32 the recovery makes it ext3 or ext4 which is compatible with harmonia and iho roms
