Root Link2SD and you (a tutorial)

Well, since we're all talking about this I gave it a go. I backed up 010312 BACKside and restored my Stock Rooted from 093011. I did have gmail still on my phone, so I emailed a copy of the market to myself but it won't install.

I emailed my rootexplorer and amazon market apk to myself and got them installed. With root explorer I can install all of my apks no problem, but still can't get market to install. Going to install Link2SD and see what happens when I unlink stuff.

Some recoveries are backing up sdext, some doesn't. I.H.O. recovery is backing up sdext, CWM 3.2.0.1 doesn't. You can check it very easy. If the recovery is able to mount sdext partition then it is able to back it up too. If not - no back up.

I have a couple of (hopefully simple) questions:

1) If I want to use Link2SD to free up space, I know that I need to root my phone. But do I need to mess with ROMs too, or will simply rooting it suffice?

2) Has anyone successfully done the Link2SD thing on a Mac? The recommended partition utility is a Windows application.

I don't think the original problem was affected by rooting the device. I believe it was the ROM that made the ability to download larger files. I could be wrong on that, but if you're moving apps without a ROM flashed to your device, I see no real need to partition your sd card. I use Gemini app something or rather to move everything, if that's your only goal. It's simple and easy and free. Hope that helps.

You can use Link2SD with the stock rom (what your mobile is running currently. you just have to be rooted).

Yes someone did, I think it was Sushifor5. There are some posts in here or another thread getting it done. I forget which program was finally used to do the partitioning.

Hi,
What is the advantage of creating the 2nd partition and setting it up as external in link2sd? I have most everything except market and superuser and titanium moved to the sd card, so what would I gain to have the 2nd partition? On a 16 gig sd, would you make the 2nd partition 2 gig? And which partition gets the current files, the bigger one? And what would go onto the external partition?
Thanks,
Gerald

Just moving to sd leaves some in internal. And some say linking rather than moving runs faster. Yes 2 gig will be fine. The larger one will have your files. The ext is where the app installs the main files.

I clicked create link for all my user apps and told it to automatically link new apps, is this all I need to do? Or should I also move the apps to the sd card through link2sd? What does create link do?

You do not want any apps moved to sd that's what link does it moves nearly the entire app to your sd and creates a link in your phone that links it to the app where it will run from your sd. Kinda like a desktop shortcut on a computer and your program is installed on a second or external hard drive.

I've been reading up about this, so is there any way to create a second partition, and rename/make it a primary without a pc? all I got is my OP V :l

ok, so I checked and it says partition sd card. I didn't want to select it and mess anything up. but as far as I know that's it. I'm runnin cwm based 4.0.1.5 recovery? I think

This was written almost a year ago so I'm not sure what might be different now, if anything. Good article to read through.

Partition SD Card
This option gives you a no-frills way to partition your SD card properly for use with ROMs that support data2ext (a very handy hack for low internal memory devices that enables an /sd-ext partition on the SD card to be used as the internal user data storage i.e. as the /data partition). Once this option is selected, you will be given options to choose the sizes for the /sd-ext partition as well as an optional /swap partition on the SD card, and will then automatically format it for you, leaving the remaining space for normal SD card usage. This option will wipe all data from your SD card so use it with caution!

The app box offers 50gb to lg users.

I didn't know it erased the card  I used it on my new card but that was before I transferred my backup.

alright I downloaded the dropbox app, but ican only upload files?? I've lookied everywhere and I cannot upload my folders. I have well over 1000 different files on my sd. Im not thinkin I wanna do them one by one
