Root Link2SD and you (a tutorial)

If I move an app to SD card and then create a link it shows Linked --> SD. If I only move the app and not create a link it shows on SD.

I have tried both types and I am not seeing any significant changes in the internal memory space, there is 63 Mb filled out of 180 Mb. I have a total of 35 apps and games including Maps and Link2SD.

I was hoping to get more internal memory by this app, am I doing something wrong?

I do choose to link both dalvik and libs but for some apps at the option of Link Library files it shows (no lib files) after Link library files which is not possible to choose that.

I used my recovery to partition many newest card
How would you go about doing this. I just got a 16GB card. Thought I would now take the plunge and try Link2SD.
Just for laugh's and grins I selected the 2GB partition with 0m swap.

That should work just fine, now run link2sd and select ext4 when it pops up and reboot, then link each item installed, you don't need to move from sd first anymore it does it for you, and there you go. Or if your doing the new build either wait till after you update to run the script or do the full wipe method that's in the all things root if you do it before you update your rom. But if you have a rom and your just getting started with this fallow the op.

Once magpie is put into the backside rom I'll likely abandon link2sd, I always favor built in over an app strictly for stability. But I'll still help what I can.

Pulled Card and will do the Link2SD app after I update and have a couple of reboot on the update.
Thanks for the Info.

I'm of the same thinking. It might be a while though. I had the funds to get the card, I'm linking the apps one way or the other. I've waited almost 6 months to be able to do this. Can't wait no more, Lol.

You can still use the card with the partition in it without having link2sd set. The phone will ignore it until something is using it.

Took it out and put it in the PC so I could see if I could figure out what ext to select in Link2SD. Thanks for that info by the way. Already put the 8GB back in so I could install the update. Will continue in the morning when my brain is fresh (trade it in for a new one every morning).

If this weren't a limited test, I'd be going nuts by now. Btw, that a2sd script you found that wouldn't boot with BACKside is actually really sweet. I've dug into the script itself, and there's some very cool stuff going on. So one of my many projects now is to get that up and running. Once I figure it out, I'll post the mojo you need.

link2sd updated today and I had a nerdgasm. New feature where it scans your partition for apps and relinks them. It's designed specifically for rom changes and updates. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I've been reading the posts in this thread for quite some time, and I was just trying to find ways that would make your tutorial a little more inviting

Yep its all very confusing with so many post, makes me wonder why not just use apps2SD and not need to fool with all that???

both will move apps to your SD so you have more room.

1 requires reading 5 pages of conflicking post about formating, 1 you just install it and go.

A few quotes that better explain the difference:
It moves virtually (save data) the entire app to the 2nd partition on the uSD card and puts a short cut on the phone linking it to the uSD. This leaves very little of the app on the phone's internal memory freeing up a considerable bit of space for more apps.

As for other apps that do the same, there is only one other of which I have heard that does this, but the card must be formatted Ext2 (or Ext3). FAT is a more universal architecture than Ext, I think all OSes support FAT.

Just moving to sd leaves some in internal. And some say linking rather than moving runs faster. Yes 2 gig will be fine. The larger one will have your files. The ext is where the app installs the main files.

You do not want any apps moved to sd that's what link does it moves nearly the entire app to your sd and creates a link in your phone that links it to the app where it will run from your sd. Kinda like a desktop shortcut on a computer and your program is installed on a second or external hard drive.

I'm just getting started with Link2SD. It will let me link an app to the sneaky new partition, OR it will let me force an app to be installed on the SD card using the "native" app2sd method when the system normally wouldn't want to do that. Which method is preferred?

Link it moves more

Meaning it frees up more space?

Correct. Linking moves virtually all files associated with the app to the new partition and places a shortcut on the internal memory of the mobile to tell the mobile where to look to find the app and everything else.

I'm discovering that. At first I was just moving stuff that couldn't normally be moved to the card (Google Maps, Facebook, etc.), but then I started experimenting with moving just about EVERYTHING over, and now I have a ridiculous amount of free internal memory: about 100MB.

By the way, I'm still using the card that came with my phone; the new "link" partition is 512MB, and the main /sdcard partition is 1.3 GB. The linked apps are using up about 300MB of the 512MB available to them. I'm pretty happy with this partitioning scheme.
