Root Link2SD and you (a tutorial)

Is connecting my V to the computer required? Cuz, when I do, nothing happens except for the phone charging.
It isn't required if you have a recovery that will do the partitioning for you (and your ROM will read the format it makes ext2|ext3|ext4 or FAT32). Typically if done via recovery it will wipe your uSD.

You can also power off the device, remove the uSD put it into a uSD adapter and insert into your computer and partition that way.

If you have a CWMod recovery then you can use QtADB which will make and store a backup of your sd card to the PC and allow you to choose the Partition format (ext3 which is what most recovery's will format the partition to doesn't work to well with BACKside) ext.2 and ext.4 work on most CM-7 ROM's.
When the partitioning is done it will transfer the backup back to the sd card.

Okay, so, I followed this tutorial to a T and successfully got Link2SD on my phone. Great! Linked all my apps, 130 megs free! Downloaded more, got 'em linked, 129 megs free! Yay!!
Then, I had the bright idea to flash Beats Audio.
Wiped Cache/Dalvik Cache and flashed Beats and rebooted.
And Link2SD said everything was linked..... but I had 4.8 megs free!!! D:
What happened?

If I remember you have to go back in and relink the dalvik cache. It has been a while since I used Link2SD and don't currently have it installed on any of my devices. I know there are a few posts within this thread detailing how to accomplish this. You might also check out Ben's tutorial about Link2SD.

You are correct, sir. Any time you wipe the dalvik cache, you will need to relink it, then reboot your phone. Open link2sd, hit the menu button, select more, then link dalvik cache. Let it's thing, then reboot. Your available memory should be restored.

Okay, so everything's good! But when I updated a bunch of apps I lost about 20 megs of space.... help? Again? :embarrassed:

I had to many problems with beats audio installation. The second attempt I didn't wipe anything and it still borked Link2SD. Gave up and Deleted it. After wiping and re-installing everything I'ts finally all back to normal.

Yes, but I just rebooted and everything was fine. But after downloading some apps I went from 120 megs free to 119 megs free. That's cool. But then, it just kept dropping (I didn't install any more apps and I clear caches frequently) and it's currently at 116 megs. Rebooting doesn't help.
What do I do now? I'm a noob with 101 problems.

Just did this and it was very useful, except one thing. In your example, given a 2 Gig card you suggest formatting the first to have ~500MB and the second to have ~1500MB (the Primary partition.) But it wasn't clear to me what each one is for.

I wish I had done it the other way around, with most of the storage space for media. I only used 300MB for apps but I had almost 1GB in media. On top of that Titanium Backups and ClockWorkMod Backups use the SD Card.

I understand that my 2 Gig card is small, I just would like the tutorial to be more clear which partition is going to be used for which things. Just add "The first is for media/backups and the second (primary) is for linked apps."

I'm sorry, I thought that was clear. I will see what I can do to make it clear. Thank you for the feedback and glad I could help you get Link2SD going.

Added a paragraph after the quote in the 2nd post in the thread: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/364833-link2sd-you-tutorial.html#post2886860

If there is another post you found misleading (of mine) please post a link and I'll see what I can do about it.

did you get an answer to your ?

So after accidentally wiping my SD card (YAYYY :'d) I finally got this working, but im confused, do you link app, dalvik and library or just dalvik and library? and what about all the system apps (aside from google play of course)

1. Always link the application file unless it's a widget app, then do not link this at all.
2. Always link dalvik-cache file unless it's a widget app.
3. It it doesn't say: (no lib files), then you should link the lib files, unless it's a widget app.

I've been loving my rooted Optimus V and Link2SD for a little over a month now. My question is whether it takes less internal memory to link an app or to install it on the SD card? The more I play with it, the less apparent the answer is. And since I don't really understand the differences, I am asking the experts.

What Link2SD does is actually allow you to move apps to the SD card that you wouldn't have been able to without it. This is accomplished by linking those apps to the system. Only a small portion of the space is needed, as opossed to having all of the app on the system taking a much larger amount of space.
I hope this has cleared up your confusion.

It takes less internal memory to link it. When you install it to the SD it still installs a bit on the internal. While linking it, as Andy says, creates small shortcuts rather than full files. When I had my Optimus V with Link2SD running on it I noticed that it ran faster than before I installed it.
