Root Link2SD and you (a tutorial)

Yeah, everything worked fine, been running BACKside for about 2 years. Without sd, boots into Google setup, but crashes before completion. Then I'm stuck with nothing more than a status bar and black screen.
If it is not booting without the card then I do not think it is the only problem. Do you have a second usd card and a nandroid backup from when it was working?

Whatever happened, it happened with the microsd in my PC. I do no have a second card. I copied the contents of the microsd to a folder on my PC.

Afterwards hangs at Android splash screen. I've attempted to boot into recovery several times, but upon the previously stated msg goes right into boot and sticks. I'm beginning to lose hope...

I go to sleep and look what happens!

Don't worry fieryfennix we'll get it straightened out.
You first need to establish what recovery you have on the phone. If it only has 4-5 options then it is the stock recovery. If 8-9 then custom.
Are you now in the BACKside ROM? Did you make a backup in the Xionia recovery?

You need to have the partition formatted to ext.4 for it to work with the BACKside ROM.
Also: What size is the SD card and what size did you make the partition?

It was xionia recovery. It did have many options, just as my other phone that has clockwork. Now when I boot into recovery, there are no options. It immediately says:

Android System Recovery.
DO NOT PULL OUT THE BATTERY!
Formatting :data
Formatting: cache
Factory Reset
Rebooting.

It boots into the Google setup. Two or three steps in, it crashes and I'm left at a black screen with nothing more than a status bar.

Your partition should be no bigger than 2GB. I like 1.5 GB better though.
It sounds like you might need to reflash the Xionia , but, the ZenGarden is a much better recovery.
Do you have the Android SDK and Java jdk-1.6u45 installed on computer, with the path to the adb.exe set?

Also: While you checking things out it would be good to change the "Class Path" to the Java jdk-1.6u45's java .exe. Just right down the first "Class Path" and then delete it. Replace with the "Class Path" to the jdk-1.6u45's java .exe which should be in the bin folder.
The "Class Path" is in the same place as the Path (environmental variables).

Thanks so very much for your help AO150, but that last one was a bit over my head. Regarding your post "Do you have the Android SDK and Java jdk-1.6u45 installed on computer, with the path to the adb.exe set?", it appears I do not. Rebuilt this PC a while back. I'll dl them and get back with you. Am also changing the partition to 1.5gb as you suggested.

Oh, and FYI, I'll be up drinking until at least midnight, so feel free to hit me up whenever you have the time. fieryfennix on Yahoo msgr. Sorry if I appear desperate, but I am. It's my wife's cell. I tried to install Link2SD to free her from the bondage of the dreaded "out of memory" situation, and have in turn nearly bricked it. :(

Silly Rabbit, Go to the All Things Root Guide sticky/Tools and Utilities. The Java listed links to the proper java jdk. Once you have it installed go to your program files on your C:drive. Go to the java folder. you will see the new java jdk that you installed. Go to the bin folder, you should see a java.exe.
This is the path you need to put in the environmental variables "class path"
Example: "C:/Program Files/Java/jdk-1.6u45/bin"
Make sure you delete the old one and make sure you put the " on both ends.

Go to the same section in the ATR guide sticky. ADB/scroll down to the Alternative Method/ click on the link. Follow the Tutuorial. Go to the last link at the bottom for instructions on how to set the path to the adb.exe manually.

Go to Direct downloads/LG Optimus V drivers.
Once you have them installed, reboot the computer (this will allow for the installation of the other two drivers, there is 5 in all). Once rebooted plug phone into the computer for the final installation of all drivers.

Go to the phone. Menu/Settings/Applications/Development. Turn on ADB debugging.

Download the ZenGarden Recovery and the flash_image. Rename the Zengarden recovery to just zrecovery.img (this just makes it easier when we get to typing in shell commands to the phone thru the android debug bridge-adb). Put both on the /sdcard directory of the SD card (it's where all the file folders are, just don't put them in a folder).
To be on the safe side also download the Xionia in it's zipped form, the ZV9 security update, and the EManUL3XXX root zip. Put the root zip on the computer (unzip), and the others on the /sdcard directory (leave them zipped).

Note: The Xionia zip can be found by clicking on the last link in the recovery section. Scroll down to the bottom of the 1st post. You should see an attachment. That's it.

Now you are set. Let me know when all this is done.
Will be back in about 22 hours from the time of this post.

Read the newest version of the Link2SD tutorial found in the All Things Root Guide sticky. Everything is explained, including how big the partition should be (no more than 2GB).

Interesting, I was trying to get a partition of 2gb using twrp as my recovery. And I kept getting a failed message.

It'll allow me a part of 1152mb ext4 but anything higher throws me that failure msg.

Just in case it matters, I'm doing this on an HTC one v, and using mounts2sd to manipulate the caches etc.

It's not the end of the world or anything, but I am curious as to what others think, and if it's possible.
Thanks

Does the HTC one v have an internal and external sd?
You can partition with Mini Tool Partition Wizard in Windows or Gparted in Linux.

Sorry got caught up in life :banghead: anywho, can't say for sure if it does. It has that emmc folder/file whatever you want to call it. Which I'd never seen till i had an elite in my hand. I've heard of people having issues with that mini tool program. But I do want a larger partition for my apps. The one v is very laggy out of the box. And anything that'll give me more space on the phone is a good thing to me. I've got a 32gb class 10 sd card so space isn't an issue.

So I guess if that tool makes a partition that can be read by the phone and adjusted with mounts2sd that'd be cool. I just find that app easier to use than others. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
