Nope. The devs have just been working around the kernel. It's thee only thing they can't really change.

Yeah, the bootlocker that Motorola is using is virtually impossible to beat. Nobody has done so yet, and likely most people that have tried have given up.

There are plenty of good custom roms. I'm running Apex 1.3 that has a splash of 2.3 in it. Mostly the status bar.
