Root Looking for a Kernal

I'm rooted and running sense. What is the best kernel that I can use to work with sense and run setcpu? I dont want to run an aftermarket ROM.

accordoing to the site. It is preferred to have nand unlocked. I rooted with unrevoked3. Did this have nand unlock?

I would second Jonessee22. I've tried many kernels and netarchy 4.3.1 cfs havs nosbc has been the most stable for me. I overclock with setcpu at 1152 and while at 245 with the screen off. Great battery life with the screen off, can eat up battery with screen on. I've also found using wifi with this kernel seems to really extend battery life.

Just so we're clear, unrevoked is *supposed* to unlock nand (s-off), but if you've never checked (even if unrevoked finished with no errors), you should turn the phone off, then turn it back on while pressing the volume down button to get to hboot. Up at the top it will say either S-ON or S-OFF. If it says S-OFF, you're good to go.

So I've flashed the 4.2.1 morhavs universal kernel but I'm having camera issues, as in the camera or camcorder don't open at all. I saw the fix for the camera fc'ing but I don't have an option to clear the app data. If anyone has a possible fix it would be appreciated, if not I'll dig around the forums this weekend when I'm not work.

How old is your Evo? If it's a hardware version 0004, and you got it no later than maybe 1 or 2 months ago, then it has the new camera hardware, and requires the new kernel drivers. If that is the case, you need to use Netarchy 4.3 or up (4.3.1 is the current stable version, so I suggest you try that).

You could give this a try also:

If you get force closes on the camera, go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Camera -> clear data.

No problem. You'll find the same thing will happen with any custom kernel that hasn't been updated yet with those drivers. Most of them have, though.

I haven't run in to the issue, but just for future reference, if a kernel has been updated to work with the latest camera hardware, is it still backwards compatible with the older hardware? Is it only new hardware people that need to decipher how current the kernel is or do us launch day people need to start paying attention now too?

Basically, the kernel developers just added the new camera drivers, but left the old ones included. Those of us with older phones don't need to care. It's perfectly backwards compatible (unless the kernel developer isn't paying attention, but...).

Wtf. I'm using this kernal, and rooted useing unrevoked, and whenever I enable setcpu (I usually freeze it using titanium) my phone crashes within 5min. Even if I don't overclock or underckock. I tried disabling perflock (I thought this kernal didn't need it) and it just crashes while its trying to disable it. Wtf is going on...

I switched to Netarchy-4.3.1-cfs-havs-sbc kernel and Have it overclocked to 1152 but If I go over my phone will freeze also Im just guessing thats because it cant draw enough power or get enough voltage or what ever due to the limitation of the kernel just try some different kernels.

Just so you know, few can overclock to 1.2 (1190) or above w/o their phone locking up and rebooting. Having SetCPU set to 245/1152 is the most stable setup I've read about and experienced myself, so no, you don't need to look for another kernel, you're in the game so to speak. :D
