Root lost after flashing rom(newb)

Hey all,

I'm new to rooting. This is my first android phone. My Evo 4g has the 3.7 software on it. I rooted the phone yesterday with unrevoked 3. It says I'm rooted. I put the Fresh 3.5 Rom on the sd card that I got from this forum or xda forums. I used rom manager and hit "install from sd card", checked the two options to back up and wipe. It did that and once it came back on I saw no difference. was it a bad Rom?

fresh is a stock rom with all the bloatware removed. you can check if everything went well by going to settings/about phone/software information/ and under build number should be the name of your rom.

First off, welcome to the forums and congrats on rooting!

When you booted the phone, did it show the sprint boot animation or fresh evo animation? Go to setting, about phone, and see what it says for your software version.

If it looks exactly the same than it was probably a bad flash rom manger and clockwork can be buggy at times, I would suggest you go to the rooting for dummies guide and follow the manual instructions on how to flash a ROM. It isn't hard and will help you learn how to use recovery if you ever need to and hopefully you won't ever "need" to use it.

Should I get another zip for Fresh or use the same zip and do it manually? After this experience I kinda wanna try Myn's Rom. Want something that will increase battery life and speed up the phone

I would do as Ocnbrze said and read through the Rooting for Dummies thread. Manually is always in my experience the best way to do flashing. Rom manager(as you are finding out) is buggy and does not work correctly all the time.

I'll try it out and get back to yall. Thanks for the quick responses.

Personally my favorite Sense ROM is Kings Ultra Froyo unleashed, it is a great ROM and is faster than most any other Sense ROM I have tried.

A rom by itself, unless it has a custom kernel with it(which most dont), is not going to increase battery life or speed up your phone. You would need to flash a custom kernel to speed it up and use something like Setcpu to increase battery life(with profile settings).

Tried to do it manually this is what I got after I wipe the dalvik cache

E:unknown volume for path</sd-ext>
Dalvik Cache wiped

Installing :/sdcard/fresh-evo-3.zip
Finding update package....
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted....

any kernels you would recommend? I heard you can get SetCPU free from XDA forums but have not seen it. Whats the use for a ROM then?

Roms remove bloatware and allow for theming. Some come with their own themes and options mods you can add in. Netarchy kernels are the ones I would recommend. Here is a guide to flashing them: [GUIDE]

Try and redownload it, make sure you wipe everything before you flash it and see if it might have been a bad download the first time.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I had a similar problem with ROM manager and I discovered that I hadn't flashed clockworkmod recovery. I would download a ROM and try to flash it through ROM manager and it would reboot without flashing anything.

I have found it to be much better to flash ROMs manually...

I flashed the clockworkmod recovery..it must b the zip itself

think i mite have found the issue...stil gettin the "installation aborted" message after downloading another rom. I use a Mac and Safari. I was reading that using Safari decompress the file and doesnt save as a zip. When I downloaded the file it would be a folder and I would have to compress it again. Trying again using Firefox. I'll let you know how it goes.

If that doesn't work, try downloading it through the browser on your phone. Might take a bit on 3g or connect to wifi to make it faster. I use Google Chrome and have had no issues with downloads as of yet.

It worked!!! Downloaded it with Firefox and successfully flashed Kings Ultra Unleased. My next question is for kernels. Would it be better to use a HAVS more or less kernel? I've been looking at nerachy's stuff. Just wanna faster phone and longer battery life.

I would make a nandroid backup of your current setup with the stock kernel that came with it and try both out. You will be able to tell pretty quickly if your phone is going to play nice with more or less havs. Netarchy 4.3.1 is the stable release of their kernels I believe. As long as you have a backup to restore, you can try them and see what works best for you.

Faster phone and good battery life are hard to come by......using something like Setcpu to underclock with screen off is the best bet for battery life if you are looking to overclock to make your phone faster.

Ok. I have the beta 4.3.2. Guess i'll go with the stable version. So underclocking helps save battery and overclock helps speed the phone up? Is there a way to do both. Also think ima try google chrome. I think the browser is kinda slow.

Was also reading that the nerachy kernel increase the fps on the video
