Root lost apps after restoring nandroid

Anyone else ever lose apps after restoring their nandroid? Doesnt happen all the time, but every now and then after restoring a nandroid I made a week or two ago, after it boots up, sometimes half of my apps are missing (the market, most of my games, and other random apps). The generic "not installed on the phone" icon appears in their place.
Nothing big, just annoying to have to re-download them all again.

Why are some apps automatically being deleted from my nandroid...without me even messing with them?

Likely they were apps you moved to the sd card using apps2sd. If you want them to come back you have to back up android secure also

Yep, Matt's answer is pretty much my stock answer for this question, with one exception. You're saying the market is missing? That's definitely not normal. Can you give a less generic list of what's missing? Do you know for a fact that any of the apps that are missing either were or weren't on the sdcard? As matt said, if you don't backup/restore .android_secure with a nandroid backup, any apps you've moved to the sdcard via apps2sd will not be backed up/restored, as that is where they are stored. Like I said, though, if the market is missing, you certainly have a different problem.

Somehow I missed that, probably because he said he downloads them again which usually implies you have the market... I guess he could have forced the market to sd card too or...it's a different problem :)

Yeah, good point...I guess we both missed things there...

Run, are you using appbrain, perhaps? Is that what you meant by the market missing? Because that can be moved to the sdcard, which would explain both why it would be missing and what you were talking about in the first place :).

lets see...some of the apps that are sometimes missing: (missing, as in I click on the generic icon and a message saying "this application is no longer installed on your device" pops up.

- all 3 of my angry birds games.
-market app
-quickboot app
-uninstaller app
-linpak app
-zedge app
.....these are the ones that come to mind. Although I know there are more.

as far the market goes. I installed "com.android.vending-2.apk" at the root of my sd card. So if the market is missing after a nandroid restore, I use Astro to install the market app again. After installation, I then clear the cache for the market under settings and then click the new market app that I just installed and it works just fine. And this is how I get the missing apps back.

Well I am using dark tremor, and I believe all my apps are stored on the sd card.
Sounds like I will backup android secure from here on out! :o

I have appbrain installed, but dont really use it often.

If you are using dark tremor you need to back up sd ext. Open your app manager and check and see if any apps are running from sd...look in android secure see if anything is in there...in your nandroid it's because apps were on the sd and you didn't back up secure. Now you are using a2sd so just back up sd ext from here out and you should be ok.

Make sure that your apps aren't still using froyo apps2sd. I had a few after I ran DT that needed to be moved back to the phone then used dt to reinstall to the sdcard

DT a2sd is an all or nothing option. It repoints /data/app to /sd-ext (for CM) or /system/sd (for Sense). If you have apps on the sdcard via froyo apps2sd, just move them back to internal storage, and they will end up on the sdcard where they should be. The system has no concept of the sd ext partition. It just thinks its internal storage. If you have a2sd running apps on the sdcard, you *can't* have anything on internal storage (if it's installed normally). In any case, were you missing some or all apps? Missing the market is still weird unless you're missing *all* your apps. In which case, don't forget to backup sd-ext with the rest of the nandroid backup. If you do have any apps moved to the card via apps2sd, move them back, or you will lose them unless you backup android_secure. It's better to just move them back to internal storage (aka sd-ext :)).

EDIT: I forgot to mention this - sometimes you don't want an app moved to the sdcard, even when using a2sd. When this is the case (like if you're using a different launcher, such as LP or ADW) you can move such apps to /system/app, which is still internal storage, and will ensure that you never lose such apps. It's a good practice to keep your launcher there if you use an aftermarket one.
