Root Lost Contacts...

Hey Guys,

I grew some balls tonight, and rooted my phone and installedCyanogenmod. It went pretty well, except for the fact that when I restored all my old stuff with Titanium Backup it seems People will not restore, along with the contact information. Unfortunately, I did not think to export my contacts, and hadn't been adding my phone contacts to my gmail (don't ask me why). This is on top of the fact that it doesn't give me an option to sync a gmail account with the contacts....

Did I do something wrong? Can I fix this? Can I somehow manaully extract my old contact information ?

I guess I didn't research enough.... b/c I didn't do that... I figured i'd be able to download a stock rom and just reflash if it came down to it..

I screwed this shit up big time because I'm missing shit like the market and mail...
 
With Cyanogenmod you need to install gapps to get the Market and Google apps back (google for them or download via ROM Manager). If you didn't sync your contacts, export them, or back them up in any way, I think you're out of luck there though.

FWIW, I find it is helpful to make a checklist of the steps I am going to follow when flashing ROMs, including making sure all important data are safe. Once I've checked things off and recorded the names or date/time of my backup files, I just throw the sheets into a file folder in case I need to refer back or figure out which backup is which.
 
If your contacts were set up as Google contatcts on 2.2, you'll be fine once you load Gapps, they'll sync back. The problem you're seeing is that the People app from 2.2 was changed to Contacts in 2.3 so it's not recognized. This brings up another issue, you would be best served to only restore market apps when switching from 2.2 to 2.3 or you may (likely will) experience problems with the transition. So...

1.) Get Gapps on your SD card.
2.) I would wipe data/cache/Dalvik again. Then immediately flash the Rom and then Gapps all back to back to back in Clockwork.
3.) Then boot into the Rom, set up your Google stuff. The market should be there now, go get Titanium and batch restore market apps only.

Hmm...I have a couple of non-market apps (purchased directly from the developers). Do you have any info as to whether this is related to the infamous battery drain/high display usage problem? I gave up on CM7 stable for that reason.

I really don't know for sure man. Only thing I could say is give it a shot without the addition of any questionable apps, then bring them in after a stable run (if you get one) and see if they're the culprit.

I have experienced great battery life on CM7 stable with the supplied kernel. But really, it could be ANY app causing your problem, even a market app. That's what sucks.

My only thought would be to load up some monitoring apps like System Panel, OS Monitor, etc and see if you can pin down anything that's killing the battery. If that fails, you could run a logcat and try to disect it to see what's going on...maybe you'll see a constantly running/failing event. The app "Log Collector" is an easy way to do this. Plus you can email the log to your gmail account or any other email account that you can then open on a PC. This is key b/c there's a lot of info to look through and you need a full sized monitor to be effective.
 
Ok I have another problem now... Now I'm getting stuck on the Cyanogenmod bootscreen. Where do I go in volume down + power button menus to have my phone recognized by my computer to put gapps on my sd...

Also when you guys say flash the rom, is installing from zip the correct option? B/c that's what i'm doing.

In hboot, select the recovery option by scrolling to it and pressing the power button, which should open Clockwork (assuming that's your custom recovery). Then in Clockwork and while hooked up to the PC via USB cable, arrow down to mounts/storage, then mount SD card. You should be able to move the Gapps file from the PC to the phone's SD card at that time. Normally you'd just hook up to the PC with the phone booted but since you're not booting, this is the workaround. The other option is to use an SD card reader in the PC if you have one.

When flashing a Rom in Clockwork, scroll down to "Install zip from SD card", then press the TRACKPAD button to accept. Then "Choose zip from SD card". Now search your SD card for the file and install.

However, make sure to first wipe data, cache and Dalvik cache (in advanced menu) first, then install the Rom, then install Gapps in the same fashion as mentioned above. All these things can be done one after another.

Really appreciate all the help. I just reflashed but couldn't find an option to wipe the cache, should I go back and reflash again?

If you have both the Rom and Gapps on your SD card at this time, I would do so before you get everything set up. It's up to you though, you might get by without issue. The options for wiping cache is located on the main menu right under wipe data...it's labled "wipe cache partition". Remember if you ever want to go backward one menu while in Clockwork, use a single press of the power button. That may be what's tripping you up. So wipe data/factory reset. Then wipe cache partition, then go to the advanced option and wipe Dalvik cache, then load the Rom, then load Gapps. At that point you MAY have to go back one menu and choose the "reboot system now" option. Then you're up and running with a full, clean wipe. Give it plenty of time now to get past the Cyan boot animation. Sometimes takes a little longer on the first attempt following a full wipe.
 
Another not so important question. On my initial install of Cyanogenmod I had the option to pick between 3 themes, and I can't seem to find them anymore. Where exactly is the option to switch between the preloaded Cyanogenmod themes?

No I still don't have my contacts.. I don't know how I can get them back if I didn't export them or sync them with google. I figured I would be able to just restore them with Titanium Backup... Is there a way for me to "restore" People?

Also what did you mean when you said Market Only Apps. Also what does it mean when there is a line through all my my apps when I try to restore missing apps with data?

BTW, even with these issues, rooting has given me a new love for my phone. I'm honestly so excited about this!
 
If you have a bonafide backup of your people app before all this that includes all your contacts, you could revert to a 2.2 Rom and restore it. Then at that point you could either export the contacts or covert them all to Google contacts (best option IMO). Then they'd be there in any Rom no matter what.

When you move from 2.2 to 2.3, its trickier than most situations. I said to restore market apps only because even if you choose to restore missing apps and not system data, you will still see some 2.2 carryover apps in your list. Some or all of those may be crossed out like you mentioned. So the safest of all routes when you manually select only market apps from that list. Everything else you see that sounds uber important...is most likely stuff from 2.2 which may well cause conflict if you restore them into 2.3. You must remember that all that stuff has already been provided in the framework of your new 2.3 Rom. And anyway, if you truly are missing something you want, you can always go back into Titanium and restore it later. Trust me, stick with market apps. I firmly believe that most people who have problems here have made poor choices when restoring.

On the plus side, this is mainly only a problem when leaping OS versions. After that fence is crossed, its smooth sailing.

I just realized I really need one of those lost contacts, so I'm going to flash back to 2.2. All I need to do is wipe everything, and flash the rom like before right?

Also, can someone direct me towards a 2.2 rom?
