Well done we are proud of you, and yes one step at a time, get all working first, then we will cross the next step is to simply root your stock phone. One you are done make sure you go to settings/about phone/and scroll to Software info, and make sure it shows 2.27.651.6 Now when you are done if you get HTC telling you you have a new update that is the .7 maintenance release build just ignore it and do not update it. Dinner and the beers are on you, LOL JK you will be fine

Well I'm sitting here with my hands shaking. It's amazing what this stuff does to me but here is where we are. It took all of maybe three minutes to install the software. Then it took maybe two minutes for it to reboot. But all this went smoothly. Right now I am working through the first screens where you set up the initial stuff. But it appears to be working fine. When I get the email stuff set up I will go into Settings>Phone> and check the information there. But I believe I have a new phone right now.

I'll be setting stuff and putting some programs on it and if all goes well I'll be ready for phase II which is the one click root and a full back up of the phone at that point.............. But as you cautioned, one baby step at a time. I'll get the phone all worked out and set up and I'll check back in here before I start Phase II............

All good so far............ :o

Okay, current good news situation..............
After three hours of customer support for the email from Sprint and DSLExtreme we finally got it sorted out. I am downloading a my apps and getting the phone so I recognize it again. There are subtle differences like I don't have the three D photo gallery and a couple of other little things but the phone is working. By tomorrow I will probably have it all set up and then I will root it and back up this working ROM and phone. Then I will try to use my Titanium back up to restore the Photo Gallery and some widgets that I liked that I can't find again and I should be good to go. The three hours had me chewing my finger nails off with all the time and customer support but got it sorted out. So there is where I am right now.................

Lisa

Yes I have checked the version I have on the phone and it's the .6 so I'm good for the root.

Great, now once done with all your apps and your phone is to your liking then we will have you root, then once you are rooted we will have you download your rooted apps you want, like Rom Manager etc...then once your rooted phone is all set up to your liking, then we will have you create a back up, and then we will look into the titanium back up and SD move or apps2sd, I personally make a note of all my apps and save then on app brain and install fresh every time, it takes less than an hour and you never have to worry for a corrupted app. JMO. also I do not care much about putting the apps to the SD card as most likely 3/4 of your installed apps will not allow you to move them to your SD card, and that is by design by the manufacture of the apps so I do not waist my time with that.

Final update for tonight............ I have the phone 99% back together like it was. I don't like the way the bookmarks are listed in the tile mode, I prefer the listed mode. A couple of my toggle widgets I couldn't find again and I don't have my pictures on my contacts. I now have the stock picture folder/program instead of the fancy 3D one that I had. But, I started out with 130mb of memory and now I have 90 with ALL my apps in place including the Rom Manager and the Apps intallation program that you told me to get. I have the one click on my sd card too. So I'm ready for the next move. Once I gain root access and dump the bloatware I'm thinking I may get this phone over 100mb of internal memory, that's FREE memory. Of course I need to get a Nandroid back up of this phone now too. In reality I like this Rom. It's like what I had and am used too. But, I do want to take a look at Fresh and a couple of others. But for the most part I'm happy with this now. Also once I get root I am going to try to restore my contacts and maybe the pictures will come with them with Titanium. But I must admit DonB that this was well worth the effort so far. I don't know how you guys put your phones back together in a couple of hours as I have been working on this nonstop for at least 8 hours. I could get almost any rom just up and basicly running in one hour though and that would be all the time I would invest to test a rom. But for now I owe all of you that gave me such support a HUGE thank you. I still have to root and get a back up and that's the next hurdle but I am confident that it will just go too. And if there was a disaster I can always reflash this .6 rom and be back to where I am in no time. I'll get to play with the Titanium and see if it's up to all the hype.

Just a thought that I may just let hang for the time being is the DC Rom that I had had and XDA keyboard on it. I like the fact that it had the little emoticons right there. Is that something that is easy to add?

So I'm going to leave it here now. I will root tomorrow unless you think I should play with this some more. But I would like to get after the bloat wear.

Thanks again so much for all your help.........

Lisa :D

I have about 60 apps and still have about 90 MB's of internal memory, and yes, once your phone is like you want it, then we will do the one click root, also add the app installer that I mentioned from the market, that will install the one click root program easily for you that you have on your SD card, then once you have the one click universal root V 1.6.1 installed then we will root your phone, then you can play with the phone for a day, and then you can install all your rooted apps. Then we will do a nandroid back up for safe keeping. once all that is done, then you can go happy Roming and play with your phone. :D

FYI the reason why I am doing this in the forum instead of emailing is for others to learn that are in the same boat.

Good Morning DonB.............

Well, I rooted the phone and that was far easier and painless then I ever could imagine. I got my four programs that use SU permissions installed and they worked after I installed a fresh Busy Box through Titanium Back up. So Root access with SU is up and running. Then I opened the ROM Manager, and after reviewing your instructions one more time I pressed "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". It asked me to confirm that I have a CDMA Hero and I pressed that and then the screen went dim for about 20 seconds and error box came back which says "An error occurred while flashing your recovery. Ok". Now I press okay and I am put right back to the ROM Manager opening screen. I tired it again with the same results. Then I shut down the phone and pulled the battery, reinstalled the battery and started the phone. Then I checked my SU's and they still work and then I opened ROM manager again tapped flash recovery and same thing. "An error occurred while flashing your recovery". So now what? I must say this has been a very easy and successful rebuild of this phone to this point.

Oh yes, I did try shutting the phone down, holding down the home button and pressing the start button and the phone will start but stops at a picture of a phone with a red triangle over it with a red exclamation point right in the middle of that. Pulled battery, restarted the phone normally and tried Rom Manager again and still get the error message. So as you're sitting there nodding your head I don't have the ability to do a Nandroid backup yet. Which for me has been the best part of a rooted phone. So I'm sure you will have and easy fix for this and I'm waiting for the response.

We're almost there...................

Lisa

Try uninstalling the Rom manager and install it again and check to make sure it is the latest version 2.5.0.5, report back, I will be in and out today as I have a lot of work to get done, but I will check in when available

You can always try to flash an alternate recovery, then try to flash clockworkmod again. There is a thread in this section that this procedure solved their issue

Okay. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Rom Manager and it is the v2.5.05. I followed Andy's instructions and flashed the Alternate Recovery and it went through fine. I have v1.6.2. Then I tried clockworkmod recovery again and it failed again With the message "an error occurred while flashing your recovery". So this is the only step I couldn't take to finish. But at least I have a Recovery that is working. Right now I am in the process of backing up this little darling. So should I just give up on trying the ClockworkMod Recovery or is there something I can do there to get that to work. Is it that special of a recovery? Anyway I will wait further instructions..........

Lisa

No don't give up yet, is your debugging check marked, also post in the XDA forum if you can as i am crazy today with stuff to do, I no I saw that error message before and there was a solution for it, but just don't have time to check it right now, but I will later if you still did not find a solution, but do not go any further until we resolve this, as when you have errors it is not good to proceed until fixed or may cause issues down the line, also PM Chromeleaf and see what he says

Okay - Success!!!

Here is what I did. I couldn't get ClockworkMod to install when I tried it a few times. Then I installed an "Alternate Recovery" and that took. Then I tried to install ClockworkMod Recovery and it failed again. So I just did a Nandroid back up so I felt safe about all this and could move on. Just now I was on XDA typing in a new question and I thought I would try to install the ClockworkMod Recovery one more time so I could get the exact wording of the failure box. When low and behold the ClockworkMod recovery was installing. As of Right now I have a successful ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.01 installed on my phone. I'm going to do a back up with that now and I should be finished???? I'll let you know how that goes........ Piece by piece I'm getting success here.............

Thanks for your help...........

Lisa :)

Great, now once you have your rooted backup, then you can do happy flashing and try the Rom I gave you it is a great ROM to try with and all you will need to add to that flash once your done is the Gapps which I mentioned, then you can play around with that Rom set things up, play with titanium back etc... and then once you are happy with it back that up also, and remember keep a copy of these back ups on your PC also for safe keeping and if you only have a 2 Gig card then I would not keep more than 2 back ups on your phone at a time. Also check your internal memory and see where you at, told you that you could do it, you just needed a little push in the right direction

Okay here is the final installment to this saga............

First DonB, it was more then a little push in the right direction. You gave me a full house shove. I thank you for that as I was freaking out over this and now I have a very usable phone and one that I may be able to play with and learn more from.

It's interesting to see what Titanium will do and won't do. I really didn't use it much to get my phone going but it has a really neat utility in it that allows one to uninstall programs with the click of a button and I used it to dump all the bloat wear out of my phone. So the grand question on that is how much memory do I have after cleaning out the phone. I didn't gain as much as I hoped but I have 82.3mb free right now. I also have a 16gig card with four gigs in use. So I think I'm in good shape for awhile. When I had the 1.6.2 Recovery on it for a little while I did a back up with that. Then when I got ClockworkMod recovery up and running I made a backup with that. Then I finished putting back the pictures on the contacts folder and some other house cleaning chores and did another back up with it in this current state.

I have a couple of minor glitches that seem to be easily to get around. When I do a Nandroid (Clockwork) back up and I reboot the phone there is one com.google.*** file or program that always is in a force close condition when I reboot the phone. I acknowledge okay on the force close and the phone starts up. Also one other minor thing is if I power down and then turn the phone back on it goes through everything but while the 3G connection shows working you can't access the internet. So the weather widgets and internet won't work. I go into setting or even just turn the airplane mode on and then off again and I get the 3g working right away. This only happens on a fresh boot up. Then the phone is good to go. But so far this is all that I have noticed that is fussy. Maybe when I was throwing away Gtalk, IM, Peep, and on and on I might have dumped something I should not have but the phone works really well. If I look in the apps drawer I have a total of 50 applications in there. This includes ones I have installed and the stock ones that I left. So that is what the phone has on it now.

The only other thing that I will do with this rom if I can is change the keyboard. DC had an XDA keyboard in his rom that I really liked. The emoticons were right there in the keyboard and it was convenient and fun to use. I have posted on XDA for more information on that and I may give that a try if it's a simple mod.

The other question I had was about this ClockworkMod Recovery. Now of course this is new to me. I was using the old Nandroid 1.5 one I believe and I like it. It was clean and concise with the information. When I couldn't get ClockworkMod to work I installed the alternate recovery of 1.6.2 and it worked really good. Any opinions on which one is best? Also will ClockworkMod handle the nandroids that were made with the "alternate" recoveries? They don't show in the ClockworkMod recovery folder so I'm curious if they will work if I wanted to go that far back. But other then that I must say this has been a grueling two days with the Hero. I guess I sort of obsess over it 'till it's done and this is all I have been doing for two days. But I think I have a good phone now. I haven't tried the phone yet to see if it's any better but I'm sure it won't be worse. How is that for optimism?

So I thank all you fine men for shoving me along and getting this to work. I would have never done it alone. In fact there was one gentleman that "held my hand" though the original root process. But I thank you all sincerely for all your help............

So there you go. Another Android Forums success story..........

Thanks again.........

Lisa...I'm glad you have it working so well now. If I remeber correctly, I "encouraged" you to go with DC's ROM some time ago...I since went to Fresh, and have stayed with that for months now. I run about 38-45 MB free Ram on the phone, and really don't worry about it, as the phone runs awesome. Again congrats on getting it working so well. And Kudos to DonB for the "shove!" He is one of many, many assets on this forum!

Lisa, I have been running the 1.6.2 recovery image for a LONG time and have never had an issue. I have read multiple posts of people having little issues with the clockwork mod recovery here and there, but use whatever you are comfortable with. Just so you know, in case it hasn't been covered, each nandroid backup is only compatible with the recovery image that was used to flash it, FWIW.

Of course JB I remember you suggestions and help. I really liked the DC Rom and it worked well for me. Pretty trouble free except for the problems I may have put in it. But after having it on my phone now for maybe five months my internal memory started to go away. I got desperate and DonB kept me from throwing the phone across the parking lot. It took a shove from him and my hands were shaking when I did it as this stuff gets too me. But I did it step by step and asked a ton of questions before I pushed the first button. But got the job done and now I think I'm going to just use if for a week or so and feel it out for bugs or what ever. Then I want to take a look at Fresh and there were some other ROMs that were recommended that I want to load up and at least look at. But I'm in it now. I'm well backed up and that is always my fall back position...........

Take care my friend and thanks for your help too.........

Lisa

If you make a nandroid backup with one recovery ie; clockworkmod then that's the recovery you will need to have, to access that nandroid.

Congrats on a reroot:D:D:D:D

Very interesting fact that each nandroid only works with the recovery that flashed it. So if I wanted to go way back to the DC Rom for what ever reason I would have to use the 1.5.2 recovery. If I want to use my very first recover of the phone in this state I would have to use the v1.6.2 and so on. So now I'm committed to the ClockworkMod with two nandroids and I have to have Clockwork recovery to get to those. Okay. I think I have it and I didn't know that subtle fact..............

Thanks so much.........

Lisa :o

Before you uninstall some of the apps, you may want of done a search, I know some are needed for your phone to work, I think Google Talk is one of them, If I find it I will post it for you, anyways great job, as for your recovery I am not sure about that but I am sure someone here will chime in, once you install the AOSP V 0.9.7 I think you will see your phone to me more stable and as for your phone being at about 85 MBs of free internal memory this is much better than what you had and it is when you reach below 30 MBs there starts to be some concern, so you are fine, keep us posted on your root and I am sure others will post on your other questions, enjoy your darling again, I also posted 2 videos on the Titanium Backup app earlier tonight ;)

+1 on the compatibility

That is correct. It is like trying to read MS word doc that was done on 2007 app and you only have 2003 it needs a conversion kit to read so CWM is your savior from now on with those backups :) Remember you did all the work we just guided you and convinced you not to give up

Well now you're making me a little nervous DonB. I did get rid of the google Talk already. My email and texts seem to work just fine and the phone still makes calls. But that com.google.(what ever it said) may have been something for the google talk. Don't know. I do have a backup before I did that but I would hate to have to go back. Any idea what would happen. I don't use Facebook or any of the other social networks. Flickr is gone too. So I haven't found the downside yet except that boot up exception but I just accept the force close and go on my way. Maybe I deleted the program that might have effected too. Who knows unless someone chimes in here..........

But for now the phone is working fine...............

I'll report back if that changes. The the ASOP is another ROM right? I check that out too............

GTalk is very important, will have issues with market:eek:

Oh yea!!! While the market starts and appears to work it won't download anything! Damn..............

So what do I do? Use my back up and restore the phone?

I'm sitting here laughing as I knew I was a little caviler with my deleting as Titanium made it so easy. So now I need advice please to repair that damage I caused........... oops...............

Okay........ I know you guys are standing by waiting to see if she can figure it out. Yes I just used my nandroid and took the phone back. Now I re deleted all the stuff EXCEPT the talk stuff and now my Market will download. All I have to do is put the pictures back in the contacts, pair my bluetooth headsets again and I believe I was where I was before I made this rude discovery. So any other rude surprises you can let me know about I will appreciate it............l

Whew.......... Thank goodness for Nandroid..........
