Lousy down/up load speed on 3G

Hmmm..Now I wish I had bought this from Best Buy instead of Radio Shack. I've already exchanged it there. Apparently both of mine were from July. Maybe I'll take it back, wait a month and buy a new one and see how that does. I really hate to give up this phone.

Somebody from that thread had also bought from Radio Shack and he got it replaced third time. Next time you get it replaced, check the date before getting the replacement.

Exactly what I was expecting.. 10.7 means it was made in july. Over at android central forums, we were speculating if build dates have some co relation with the issues. Some people reported that after swapping out device multiple times they eventually got a satisfactory epic, and "satisfactory" epic's build date for all of them is 10.8, meaning august build. Seems like battery/phone made in august have better quality and less issues. I am not saying that all august built phones are free of issues and all july built phones have issues, but so far it does look like august built epics are doing little better.

For other people, would you please share your device's build dates and what kind of issues are you experiencing.

Just curious, do any of the folks with August build phones have >200 Kbps upload speeds under 3G?

When I first tested my Epic's 3G performance I was getting upwards of 1 Mbps download and up to 700 Kbps upload. Trying it today ... it's hovering around 300 Kbps upload and the highest upload I've seen is 253 Kbps, though the average is 154 Kbps.

4G is also hugely slower today than normal, slower than 3G on the download side even, which is surprising since it's been great to this point.

I did get one test at 1.5Mbp/s download and 253 Kbps upload earlier today, but haven't been able to repeat it.

Date on the battery is: 2010.08.13.

I expect the poor 3G performance is a network issue, especially since my 4G is borked today too, since load and performance does vary there (and I don't really trust the SpeedTest.Net app as far as I can comfortably spit out a rat).

This is not something that was discussed in those forums. But looks like build date and product quality are definitely related. I guess we need to get it polled.

Thanks! I was unaware about speedtest.net being inaccurate or problematic as it seemed ok for me. I figured any speed test app would be useful as long as you keep using the same app pointed to the same server and do multiple tests to gauge the avg. Kind of the same principle of always weighing yourself with the same scale around the same time of day. :-) Now, I want to re-buy the Epic and make sure it's an August build unit to retest.

This thread made me realize my home internet sucks. $30 bucks a month for 1mb down from Cox... 3G is faster than that...

battery date is 2010.7.24.

Major 4G speeds, major wifi speeds but lousy 3g speeds...

With the same results, I am inclined to suspect Sprint capping data or a phone issue, not a random network issue.

Just tested Hero as I sold it today, It was getting 1.8mbps down and 858kbps up and my epic did only 1.1mbps down and 152kbps up. So NOT a random network issue!!!

What application is reliable for speed tests? I'll check my speeds tonight, 10.08 behind battery means an august build phone correct? The actual battery is july though.

Yes that is correct. Are you having any issues with battery?? Just asked since you said it is from july. So far no one has said anything to link battery life to its build date, but I am just curious.

I got it on launch day but its still too early to tell, I mean I did that airplane on/off fix for time without signal and dropped it from 80% w/o signal to 20% and I'm still at like 85% battery life after 4 hours of use( I dont know if the battery monitor is accurate), I also was gaming for almost 2 hours in that time, made a few calls/texts and was reading these forums. So.... I'll post back when I can see how it is on a full work day

What program are you using for accurate speed tests?

I use a combination of SpeedTest app and browser based mobilespeedtest.com website. It will hard to nail down one particular source for correct speed test results, but what I do is run the speed test from two nearest same servers every time. That way even if my results are not absolutely correct, they are at least relatively correct.

same for me, i was driving and testing with speedtest, I know shouldn't be driving and doing it, but anyway, was getting over 1 meg down speeds and up speeds never broke over 150 or thereabouts, definately getting capped, don't know if its network or on phones with 10 dollar data fee or what, but I'm getting close to saying goodbye to this phone and I really really love it. but data issues, gps issues, etc is getting a bit too much. we all know the 4G spectrum is too high to be all that useful, and its uploads are capped as well, so basically we are uploading at 100K? and paying 10 bucks a month more, 20 bucks for me since I have 2 of them for this privledge?

While I was driving I did these tests using speedtest.net app also it was using the texas server to test when I live in hawaii -_- (recommended it).

ping to server : 256ms

3G speeds:
DL-1.45 mbps, UL-0.15 mbps

4G speeds:
DL - 2.87 mbps, UL-1.05 mbps

Build: 10.08
Battery: 2010.07.26

I thought I had it bad. Lol Maybe you should call Sprint and get one of their free in house cell sites for better coverage. :-)

Oops I see you found it already.

I just did .087 Mbps which is smoking fast for me. :D and 0.14 Mbps up. I don't think I've ever gotten higher.

i called sprint about the capped upload speed at 150kbps. the woman said she would call me back in 30 minutes or so. said we should get like 300-500k of upload speed. I ran a speedtest and it locked at 150kbps as usual and she agrees that it shouldn't stop there so we will see what happens. I know its not just my phone as my wifes epic does exactly the same thing. So either its network related in my area or phone related.

Verizon has no problem with upload speeds.

EDIT: they called back and said they will open up a ticket, don't know what that means, I know a ticket at my company means 6 months down the road, they might bother doing something. They made me do a hard reset which I knew would do nothing but I did it to appease them. Did it on the wifes phone, wasn't going to screw with my rooted phone.

Did some more testing in various places today.

On 3G, with full bars, anywhere from 250 Kbps to 1.2 Mbps downstream, haven't managed to get over 170 Kbps upstream today.

On 4G, 3.5 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up.

Something is definitely up.

Thats a bit a dissapointing considering how bad I wanted this phone originally, maybe they'll have some better build qualities in the coming months, I wonder if Sprint will release another Android keyboard... high-end

you doing better than me, the absolute tops I can get is 152kbps on upload even with 1.1 meg download.

Everyone should call sprint and tell them. get that support ticket going. The woman on the phone said we should be getting like 500-700kbps upload speed.

Something is definately capped on the phone or the network, you can see it very clearly on the upload test, when the upload starts the needle jumps up to like 400K and quickly jumps back down to the 100-150 area.

I'm returning this phone tomorrow. Sprint 3G sucks I barely get over 100kbps, with T-mobile I was getting near 4mbps on the average, and rarely would have a dropped call. I love the Epic, but I don't like the network. :(

Right now I'm average 0.19 Mbps down :D

I don't think a in house device will help me since according to their coverage map, I have only good coverage at my house and excellent coverage at my mothers. Yet I spent 20 minutes at her house trying to make a phone call because I had 0 bars, no signal. At this rate I'll need a airave for every house I go to lol.

In fairness, although my husband's Evo gets a better signal, I used his phone and dropped 3 calls. (all the same call) so I think its just Sprint. They say we have a tower being repaired thats been down since August 5th and even if that is true, thats over a month with shoddy service. They aren't giving me faith in them.

Verizon's tower is very close. I can almost spit and hit it its so close to me. The problem is, they don't have the Epic, or any other phone I want. Damnit if the Epic didn't spoil me as far as screens go. And I really need a keyboard.

I wonder if anyone is getting good 3G speeds. The problem is the people that complain post and the ones that are happy not so much. I'd like to hear what 3G speeds people that are happy with their phone are getting.

Updating for today, before I wander over to the Sprint store to see if other phones are having this issue or if I'm returning my Epic and waiting on the next round of hot devices (and probably Android 3.0).

Speeds are getting worse not better for me, and this is with full indicated signal.

Averaging 500 Kbps download and 80 Kbps upload on 3G.

1.8 Mbps download 112 Kbps upload on 4G.

Ping is assinine in both cases, regardless of which server I try to hit.

Right now AT&T's 3G is running about 2 Mbps each way and on 3 bars, not full signal!

Itll probably be fixed with a radio update.. but I know that sucks in the meantime. This is where you're going to have to hope that Samsung actually plans to support their phones though. Even in so-so conditions I get better speeds than most of the ones here. 4G= 7-9 megs 3G= 3ish
