Root Love my HTC EVO 4G!!!

Hey everyone, I'm new and appreciate the opportunity to get some info from the right group of folks, finally...

Again, thanks for having me. I rooted my last EVO in 2011 and loved it soo much I bought another one. However, the links I had used before to download Superuser are no longer valid ( I was able to muster up the HTCDriver link...I expected this but, again just hoping someone might be able to lead me in the right direction with a current SU link to unlock this device.

Thanks for any help on this...

Welcome meyers1080!
Are you looking for the superuser .zip to stay on the stock rom albeit just rooted?

Then see this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Click on "show" under the HTCDev method, then scroll down to Step 3 (flash the su file or flash a rom) and click on "show".

Then click on "show" under the words, "stay on stock".
The SU .zip file is there....flash in recovery. :)
Have you unlocked the bootloader already?

Hey thanks again for all the useful info its coming along just fine. However, I'm stuck on "waiting on device" in cmd prmpt with bootloader unlock from the HTCdev link... something I'm missing here..?

p.s already checked 'device manager' and no 'unknown device' indicated

Is your phone in "Fastboot" in the bootloader screen?

Are you opening the command prompt from your "Android" folder?---the folder with the files:
adb.exe
fastboot.exe
AdbWinApi.dll

I think you are stuck on step 8 of the htc dev method correct?
Step 8

Type in Command Prompt: fastboot oem get_identifier_token.

I'm sorry for all the questions, but just double checking stuff is all :)

yes in fastboot- htc sync downloaded from link- yes from my android folder i created with those 3

no worrries about the questions , everyone troubleshoots differently brotha

pretty much, just multiple attempts/ after getting the token and putting in my android file and typing in 'fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin' I get the cmd prompt error cannot load- not sure what the hang up is now-

Again, thank you kind Sirs for the guidance last evening. One other question that has me looped, is how to save gapps (Navigation etc.) Last Evo I rooted and wiped took all this away. I was able to get gapps apk downloads but, afterwards Navigation was always looking for GPS. No good... Is this why a nandroid file is created?

Also, looking to get CyanogenMod 10.1 M3... any opinions?

An order to which file or link REALLY needs to be installed first. For example, the ROM, titanium back up and so forth. I did get a list from the Dummies giude but still skeptical that i might do something out of order and eff something up!

Thanks

Gapps are usually in the form of a .zip file that is flashed with an AOSP rom.

The GPS radio is part of the phone's hardware and doesn't have anything to do with gapps or a rom.

A nandroid backup is like a computer restore point, or a game save. It is a snapshot of your phone's current state. Does that make sense?

Sorry if I'm not understanding your question :(

I do better understand now...thank you. OK, so I lean towards the ASOP ROM? Correct? And for the order of install after the bootloader unlock would be helpful- Ultimately I'm learning and having fun-

Im weary of the links from the dumdum guide, when they DL some come up as codec package and setup(1).exe whick doesnt seem to match the name of the original file im downloading. Normal??

There is a general order when it comes to flashing roms, but some rom devolpers may have different requirments so check the instructions that will be near the start of each rom posting.

Edit: I was looking back at some of the questions you had about flashing roms and apps. If you post the link to the rom you decide on of us will be happy to make sure you understand the procedure for it.

Sense roms will come with their own "gapps" but thier not called gapps, so no need to flash those separately.
Sense roms are also big as far as memory.

AOSP roms are smaller in memory size, therefore I think they are alot faster overall. But you do have to flash a gapps package (usually posted in the rom's op)

What step are you on as far as the rooting process?

Edit: bah!!! ninj'd by the big bad biker dood!! :D

I would be on 'step 3 flash the su file or flash a rom' HTC has nothing on it, all contacts and other media backed up on gmail

That helps a lot. Good to not assume those would all be in the same order for each separate ROM- Again, learning and I appreciate it

No stock by any means, so I need to flash the su file to clear out the stock os...correct?

Recovery? not sure I'm not that far yet. Or am I...sh*t...
