low hung pants

Let me put it this way. I am a short, fat, 37 year old woman with prematurely grey hair that I sometimes dye and sometimes don't. If I go out in cutoff sweats, a t-shirt with a stain on it, my hair uncombed, no makeup, no bra... basically, looking like I just rolled out of bed, then yes, I absolutely expect that people will make a snap judgment about me, and rightfully so. I'm sending the message that I'm a fat, lazy slob. Am I? Nope. But to those people who see me, that's their only impression of me. It's not the impression I want to give, so I don't go out in public like that.

Humans are, by and large, visual creatures. And because it's unrealistic to expect every single person to "sit down and have a conversation with" every other person in the world, appearances DO matter. If you don't want people to think you're an uneducated thug, don't project that image. Seems pretty simple.

Actually when I first read the title of the thread, I was going to link this...but naturally I got into my serious philosphical self and missed the oppertunity :P

And for the record I agree that you "look like a fool with your pants on the ground" but to treat the person like a fool before you get to know them is absurd...but then again maybe im just a bit too trusting or naive. The way I see, we should simply close our eyes, and listen to the person. That way it eliminates any judgments concerning appearance.

ok.. in the ideal world.. we all live and let live. judge not, unless you be judged.

but... in real world....
we ALL make snap judgments based on our personal experiences.

example: you and your spouse and small children need to make a long distance trip in a car.
2 rental cars companies:
both have the same cars and same prices
1 lot is clean and nice office... other is not.
which do you choose?

Sagging was popular back in the 90's and really I have never seen a resurgence since. Yea I see some people sagging their jeans but now I see far more wearing jeans that are so tight you question how their feet made it through the leg holes. I guess it is popular enough however that a bar I just visited had a dress code on the door that required all pant waists to be secured at the waist only. Thought that was mildly amusing.

As for where the fad started. Instead of arguing almost-facts back and forth, maybe, just maybe, more than one person in more than one place thought of not pulling their pants up, and maybe it could have different meanings to different people in different regions. Just maybe.

As for gays not advertising themselves in prison... you're wrong. Some might not want to, but some definitely do.
