Help Low memory sign

Hi

I'm fed up with the constantly "Low memory sign" on my Desire.

According to App2sd, in "Phone Only" section it shows that total memory is 147.62mb and available is 18.15mb and here are the details of apps present in phone, shown in "Phone only" section and their sizes.

Adobe Flash Player: 12.05
Maps:9.84
Facebook:6.29
Gmail: 4.59
Dictionary:4.43
Market:4.36
Seesmic: 4.32
Camera 360: 3.84
LiveProfile: 3.72
WidgetLocker: 2.77
Alarm clock plus: 2.66
Juice defender: 2.12
Youtube: 1.3
Notes: 516KB
Bluetooth widget: 84KB
Batter widget: 76KB
WiFi widget: 72KB
APN on/off widget: 64KB

This all adds up to 65.01. So, there should be then 82.61MB space left in my phone but it says 18.06 only and whenever I install any app now, "Low memory sign" pops up and forces me to delete either an old app or simply not install a new app. I'm really annoyed by this.

Please help me

Thanks

Have you tried clearing your app caches? Are your contacts saved on your phone? As if you're synced with Facebook, your contact list is probably massive and is taking up a fair bit. I remember when I was synced, at least 15-20mb was taken up by it.

Get Accleaner from Market and clean the apps cache.
Check how large is the Contacts Storage size in Application Manager.

I have the same problem as the OP. I've added up all apps on the phone and that totals to 29.24 MB (the rest is on the sd). I also cleared all caches, don't use Facebook, don't use the standard mail client (I use K-9). Still according to Adao File Manager, I use 134 of 147 MB reserved for apps. As a bonus, Android MArket refuses to download any new programs (the download hangs while starting).

I'm using stock HTC Android 2.2

Its apps, app data, app cache, app libs, your system settings, dalvik cache all on "internal storage" i.e the /data partition.

Its not just apps. Apps will never add up to the full amout of used data.

I'm using Gmail app, not Htc's own mail client. Is that OK or should I even stop using Gmail and install K9?

I use facebook app only when I have to send message to someone. Should I simply sign out and never use it? Then, what's the advantage of having Android phones? Shouldn't I then leave android and move to iPhone/WebOS with large internal memory?

Gmail is fine.

Its not android thats the problem here. Its the HTC desire with low memory. Not all android phones are affected. Not even all HTC phones are affected.

If you're really struggling with internal memory on 2.2, have a look in the tips and tricks sub forum here (for desire).

Theres a guide to force all apps to install to SD card. (except adobe flash and maps I think)

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean Android, instead HTC. If HTC continues making phones with this small internal memories, at least I'm not going to buy HTC again then.

They haven't continued. They realised their mistake and all the phones released since have bigger memory.

When I go to /data with Adao File Manager, nothing is displayed. Do I have to be root to see anything there?

some file managers just dont show anything there.

Try downloading "android mate". Im pretty sure that does.

Ok, I've finally managed to free up enough space to be able to install Android Mate (but not to get rid of that sign of course). But how do I find out what's eating my space? There are barely any programs installed on the phone itself, caches are cleaned (cleaning dalvik cache is pointless as it's regenerated every reboot). Where to look?

Its a tricky one. You just have to look at all the folder properties to see the sizes. Theres not a lot out there that gives a break down.

This is weird. I looked through /data and only found one temp file of 2 mb, deleted it, but nothing else big and redundant (or even just big). I have used this phone for a couple of months now, with lots of more programs installed on the phone itself, but only recently did this low memory crap show up. The only conclusion I can come up with is that something's leaking data. What happens if I format /data (I've rooted the phone by now)?

Check that Contacts/Facebook contacts are not eating all your space - this is a known bug and took my contacts cache from 18Mb to over 80Mb.

Thank you all for your help but I've decided to install Cyanogenmod. I've got a lot more space now (especially since I can now move Flash and Maps to the cd card). Though I do miss Sense and its widgets, so I might go for a custom rom with Sense later.
