Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

I just tried this and chose disable, sms, mms, and all and all my texts still show up in the stock messaging app as well. I have notifications on the stock app disabled but still have duplicates in each app.

Bummer. I wonder if you have to be rooted to disable the stock messaging app?

I posted this in the applications' forum and someone replied that they believed that since Handcent relied on the stock messaging app to work that this new feature would be a full replacement if you remove the stock app. So, you have to be rooted. I am not so this feature does nothing for me.

FOUND A TRICK THAT WORKS

not sure if its been mentioned in this or not, but I just deleted the Data on my facebook app, was about 33 mb.

Low storage icon went away, facebook acts exactly the same way, I just had to log back in the first time opening the app again.

hope that helps people out.

That's probably only going to be a temporary fix. Over time either the Facebook app, or something else will get too large and you'll get the error again.

Moreover, this worked on your phone. There is no guarantee it will fix the problem for other people.

its still working great for me.

just installed over 80mb of new apps and no low space warning. (plants vs zombies freebie on amazon was like 74 or something insane)

This thread has the highest "old wives' tale" score of any. The problem is a 150MB limit in the /data/data partition. That's it. All of the OWTs relate to temporary ways to reduce the amount of 'stuff' being stored there by apps. Eventually it comes back. I had it REALLY bad with 500+ contacts in "Phone" storage, 800 Facebook contacts, etc. etc.

If you are willing to root your phone, you can solve this forever. Use Not Enough Space, an app which will extend /data/data into a larger partition via a container file in /emmc (phone's internal storage). NES has a zillion options. Skip them all and just create a 256 MB "NES Partition" and be sure to CREATE IN /EMMC NOT ON THE SD!!!!! You have 6Gb in /emmc and that container file is vital to your apps, so don't mess with the SD which if removed will bust the apps that are using it.

Once you have created the NES partition in /ammc, start moving apps to NES Partition. Refresh the display. You'll notice that the /data/data free space (at the top of the NES app display) will start getting bigger and bigger. Once you have say 70Gb free, you've moved enough.

You'll never get the error again because you have effectively increased /data/data from 150MB to ~400MB.

THANKS so much for this!!!!! I have known basically what needed to be done, hoped that HTC would do it, and now you came up with the solution.

Assuming this works (gonna try it now), if you're near Harrisburg, NC I'll buy you a big burger & beer.,

I did the root thing recently and have been watching /data/data regularly. I noted that my Nook reader app that I haven't used but once, took up 10MB (LIB file), so I deleted it for now.

An idea I heard recently was the idea of only DOWNLOADING apps to a subdir on the SD, saving them for installation when you need them. Saves a bit of time then. I haven't quite figured out how to do this instead of installing them yet.

Thanks again, bo Barry

wow, i wished i lived near nc and offered you some help, that's awesome. big burger... yum... haha ;)

i am seriously considering the rooting issue now... for now, i might have to take my phone back to verizon for another issue... seems my speaker is now blown out...

There is a common issue where metal pieces get into the speaker. If that is the problem, you can remove them with a magnet.

Whoops, I want my burger back! I tried the NES program and struck out. It appeared to create a 256MB NES partition in /emmc. I tried mounting it. Then I could not see it with Root Explorer. I did find a nespart folder in the /data partition.

The advanced sd card manager only shows the 'move to sd' and to the phone, so it can't be used to move to /emmc/NES (which doesn't exist). So I don't know how/where to move apps.

I wrote the creator to see if he had any ideas.

Then my Dinc started shutting down, and rebooting, etc so I have temporarily removed the app.

I'm not worried about the $2.99 I paid, but who came up with the 15minute refund policy? How much can you do with a new app in 15minutes? :) I guess its set to 15 minutes because someone figured out how to gyp the system and get it free if given 16 minutes or so?
Any help appreciated.

I've seen others complain about this app. Another issue was that once apps were put in this partition they would stop working because the apps weren't designed to use this space.

You should always do your own investigating into an app. Don't just go with one person's statement. Read reviews and other peoples experiences, particularly with an app that changes the internal directory structure of the device.

I reinstalled NES, followed the directions and it actually does work. I moved Google Earth and one game and picked up some space in /data/data.

Here's what I learned.
1. It doesn't make a partition/folder in /emmc/NES. It is in /data/nespart. Don't ask me what's going on, but it appears to work so far.
2. To move an app, you select it in the NES list and then pick the NES partition.

I even figured out how to get MyBackupPro to work. It appears to get 'stuck' during backup and recovery. Just put the incD down, get a cup of coffee and wait a bit. It appears to work good that way. I'm wondering if it is smart enough to go down to /data/nespart to get to get the moved apps.

Now for a new thread about my remaining headache. It freezes up (usually in the OFF mode) when I disconnect from the charger. It froze once in the ON mode. The only fix is removal of the battery momentarily. A big headache.

Just curious if you happen to mount your partitions as storage devices on your PC. Does this NES partition disappear while it is mounted and then reappear when you switch to charge only mode?

I have been geting this icon for a very long time. I thought is was because I was running very low on the 2gb card that came installed. I installed a 8gb card tonight and I am still getting the error. I am not sure how to get it to go away. Anyone seen this and have an idea how to get this to vanish?

Thanks in advance

There is a big massive thread on this stickied to the top of the support thread.

Development:

I'm now getting a notification intermittently. Sometimes lasting less than a minute:

application data space is low. To free up space please 1. go to mail app and

Then it's cut off.

This is a different message than the one that is caused by actual changes in app data space. I do nothing to cause or solve this and it appears and disappears on it's own.

You are lucky that your problem goes away. Mine eventually became constant so I installed the Not Enough Space (NES) app and all my grief is gone.

You should check your mail app and empty the trash periodically. It does not empty, and each msg has to be individually deleted! A big pain if you forget to do it once a week. That may solve your intermittent problem.

Not true on my phone?? My emails (stock mail app) never go to trash when i delete unless i 'refresh' the trash when i open it. If you never open trash folder on phone then nothing should be there ever. (by default it is set up to refresh any folder you open)

Okay, FINALLY got my HTC Incredible in February, and I was in awe. I had dreams of finally getting my phone, and it came true. All was great until about a couple moths ago. I kept getting the warning message "Application Data Space is Low". I didn't think anything of it, but it would start to not let me open texts. So I deleted half my apps so I could text! Then it wouldn't let me call people, my phone would start crashing, (which it does about twice a day still), and I still am getting error messages like this, I delete apps, it comes back, it won't let me read messages, I delete more apps. I now only have 9 APPS, an they are all in my SD card! I have 12 songs and bout 400 pictures, I delete my messages EVERY DAY/NIGHT (about twice a day!) have NO live wallpapers, widgets, ect. installed. HTC doesn't know what the hell to do, I'M ABOUT TO THROW MY DAMN PHONE AT THE WALL! PLEASE, ANYONE HELP ME!

There is a fix, and no it is not deleting all your apps to get it to go away. :p

Basically for some real dumb reason HTC has given the data/data folder 150MB of storage space and when that gets close to full you will not be able to add anymore apps to your phone. So even if you have 5+GB of space left you are stuck.

But there is an app in the market that I was a little leary on trying at first but after getting it and seeing that it works great I wanted to share this with everyone.

This is the app: NotEnoughSpace | AppBrain Android Market

I was able to move Google Earth's 16MB to the partition this app created and have it work, and freed up all that space in my data/data folder.

BTW INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

1) Create a partition (I made a 1GB one on the phone in emmc)

2) Pick an app taking up a lot of space (like Google Earth) the app will show you how much space each app takes up in the data/data folder so you will learn why you are having an issue.

3) Click to open up the app (Inside NotEnoughSpace of course) and click all the sub directories (most apps have 4-5) and move them ALL to the partition.

That's it. And you can always move everything back if you want. But just note that if you move the app itself OR don't move every sub directory the app wont work after a reboot. Took me a few tries and multiple reboots to figure this all out but now I am good to go and freed up much space. :D

NES has been discussed at length in the massive thread on the issue in (stickied on top of) the Support section. Where this thread will be moved in 5...4...3...2...
