Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

Maybe post the link so the OP can check it out?

Never had this myself, but apparently it is the HTC mail app. I THINK you need to clear the cache.

Hmm, any idea how to do that? I don't use mail, but gmail has been acting up so I'll try anything. Don't want to factory reset as I'm rooted and it's just a pain lol

This happened to me about a month ago, and I did like the poster above and just deleted all the sent emails and trash emails, and that worked for awhile, but yesterday it came back with a vengeance, couldn't get rid of the error message, couldn't delete anything else, kept getting force closes and wasn't receiving notifications.

So finally I moved my camera pictures to my PC, made sure my Appbrain was all in place and did a factory reset. So far, so good.

Not sure if I'm going to go the K-9 and Handcent route. Probably not just yet, but if it starts happening again, I will because obviously the native mail/messaging client is causing this...

I ran into this issue this morning and after hours of googling found a fix that actually worked for me, without requiring a hard reset. I deleted all cache and data for all HTC Sense apps (Mail, FriendStream, Peep, etc). As a result I had to re-configure my home screens, but at least I didn't have to reinstall all my apps.

Upon further investigation, it does appear that the issue is HTC Mail, which is a ridiculously bloated 90MB on my phone. I'm just hoping I can put off a hard reset and that the Froyo update will include a fix to this issue.

I also had this issue today...... Deleted a few seldom used apps, deleted texts, pix, etc. and that didn't help. Followed this procedure - deleting cache and data from HTC Sense apps and... SUCCESS - no more error message. Thanks for the tip, glad I did not have to do a hard reset!...

I ran into problems from the htc mail. I had ran a titanium backup and started to notice that the htc mail was growing. I didn't realize that when you delete the email that is goes to a trash file and has to be deleted again. My HTC Mail was over 1oomb and causing problems.

I deleted the account for htc mail with no luck and the mail was still coming. So, I went into titanium backup and selected the htc mail widget and hard pressed it to pull up window with choices. I selected wipe data for the widget and the Htc mail went from over 100mb and to little over 1mb and the mail stopped coming in after getting rid of the data.

I think there has to be a memory leak if it was pulling from the titanium backup I had done.

You have to be rooted to use titanium backup but this kept me from doing a hard reset and wiping everything out.

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications: Scroll down to Mail with a standard "open envelope" icon. It will say HTC Corporation underneath it.

Tap it and there will be a button to Clear Cache.

Can't hurt just to look and see. This is also a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with what your other applications are doing.

Hey all...this error drove me crazy for two days. I received an e mail from HTC with a fix that worked great for me. Eventually the low storage will BRICK your phone. as it did for mine this morning. Here is what I was told to do and it WORKED and i didn't have to factory reset my phone.

Dear Pete,

I understand that you are getting a

Quick question -

I've been getting a "low on space" message for the last several days despite having several gigs left on both the SD and internal storage (and 476mb left on internal memory). My Gmail app stopped working today (I didn't realize 'till I got home that I had 15 emails). Called Verizon, they said to do a factory reset.

note - I unREvoked rooted it a couple days ago, no problems there.

I went to settings - privacy - factory reset.

When my phone re-booted, it's not "reset" - my background is the photograph i set it to, the screens are all organized the same way.

Only difference - My apps appear to be gone, and in their place are little android logo place holders.

No re-registering with Verizon (*228), no filling in account information...just a normal re-boot with all my apps gone, but the phone otherwise unchanged. The LOW DISC SPACE MESSAGE IS STILL THERE :-(

Any idea what this might be up?

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: what's the difference between factory reset under 'privacy' and 'format phone storage' under 'SD card and phone storage?'

I got this storage message. After deleting some unused apps didn't help...

I cleared Peep data, turned off the sync, and the message went away and my battery life improved!

I think I have solved on my HTC incredible, which has 8GB, says 7GB remaining, but I get Phone Storage Full errors, and I cannot download apps nor MMS and other problems.

I had my Exchange email set to download all my email and calendar, and I think the storage was actually full and misreporting it had space. I set the email sync to get only 30 days, waited for a long re-sync (which effectively un-synced many emails), and now all failing apps are working again and phone storage full errors gone.

Therefore
a) check apps and storage memory, probably see lots of free space
b) check Exchange, Gmail, Facebook, or other sync/storage settings
c) look into optomizing those settings
d) see if resolved
e) report results here on this post and other similar posts

I've been having the same problem for the last week - it recently became so bad, my gmail app stopped receiving email and I couldn't receive texts. Deleting texts didn't help, and i have tons of space/memory left.

Factory reset didn't WORK (gave me back my regular home screen, all the app icons had been replaced with android icons as the apps were deleted), but all my preferences were still there. Weird.

I installed a nandroid backup from a week ago (i was having the problem back then too), and the problem has so far not returned.

So: my solution: make a nandroid backup, then use it.

Doing the defrag did not delete anything off of my phone. Also I am NON ROOTED so I can only say it worked for my NON ROOTED phone. :-) I still hope a patch is coming for this though.

Just tried the defragging method...didn't work for me. Low memory warning still there.

Called HTC customer support, and after getting through the basic suggestions (delete some mail, texts, and your temporary browser data) with no success, I was told a hard reset is the only option.

I am begrudgingly about to begin that process.

My incredible keeps telling me that "Application data space is low? Ive removed at least 50 MB of apps and re-booted but still get the same message.

SD card total space is 1.84 available 1.34

Internal phone storage is 6.60 GB and 5.12 GB available

Phone memory is 748MB and 503 MB available

Whats going on? I don't see a problem in the numbers.

Please help

I would have given that a try, but unfortunately with the low system memory error, I was unable to install any new applications...

Grr...

when you get the error, delete all SENT mail and check all the DELETED folders too.

I have found uninstalling some apps rebooting and then installing them again works

I had to Hard Reset just a few days ago. I didn't try the "De-Frag" method, as that post missed me by a few days. The error message is now gone, but now I have a few other issues. Nothing too serious, just some things that are acting a little funky (i.e. multiple contacts replicated numerous times for some reason).

All I did:
  1. Was back up my apps to AppBrain (if you don't already have it, this won't work since you probably can't install anything).
  2. Export vCards of any contacts I had stored on the Phone (this might have been unnecessary or even a mistake).
  3. Used Astro to move any files from my phone that I wanted to keep to my SDcard.
  4. Should have taken picture of my layout (but I figured it out).
  5. HARD-Reset
  6. Went back through the Configure menues
  7. Re-installed my apps.
  8. Re-constructed my layout.
All in all, it really wasn't near as bad as I'd expected. The worst part was re-installing my apps. I did them one at a time. However, you can probably do them in-mass with "Fast Web Installer" from appbrain. But you're in for a few 1-2 hours most likely. Probably the biggest annoyance afterward is that my Custom Dictionary is now gone. I am going to create a new thread that explains some of my problems (cause I don't really think they have much to do with the phone and more to do with me).

A FACTORY RESET is not an option for most people so i've been looking elsewhere for solutions to this annoying notification memory problem.
My research has shown me that this error doesn't appear to be the same for everyone.

  1. Some people have a problem with the HTC mail app (better settings below)
  2. Some people have a problem with the internet browser cache.
  3. Some people have a problem with the Peep cache.
  4. Some people have too many messages- have to delete
  5. Some people have an insanely large call history- have to delete

HTC MAIL SETTINGS- these settings changes had a short term affect (one week)

SETTING 1
MAIL>Menu>more>Settings>General settings>Temporary attachment storage> sd card

SETTING 2
Send & receive> mail size limit> no limit

My possible solution- hopefully long term
Clear the contact storage cache
SETTINGS>APPLICATIONS>MANAGE APPLICATIONS>CONTACT STORAGE>clear cache

I'm curious if this solution is longterm or not.
I cleared the peep and browser cache but it only helped for 2 days.
Taking off the HTC MAIL app also only had a temporary effect.

Does clearing the CONTACT STORAGE cache have a long term effect?

It did for me. I use exchange and I think I built and rebuilt contacts and calendar so many times by data and cache storage got to be huge. Deleting the account did not seem to detete everything. So I deleted contacts in the People app and then cleared data and storage through manage apps and have not seen the low memory notice since. I've even reinstalled apps (that I deleted, like Earth) back.
