Root LTEVO have s-off but cannot flash anything

scohen987

Newbie
Hello, I have just achieved S-Off on my HTC EVO 4g lte by using the Dirty Racun method. Fastboot confirms I have s-off. However, at the top of the screen it says "Tampered" and "Locked". I can't flash anything, I get remote not allowed errors when I try to flash anything, be it recovery, a rom image, or my HTC unlock code. I do not know how to proceed from here. I was under the impression that enabling s-off is supposed to relock the bootloader, but that it doesn't matter and you can still flash whatever you want. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I apologize if I am posting in the wrong forum.

Welcome to the Forums!!! :D

Also awesome on achieving S-off!! ;)

Seems you may have skipped a step somewhere, because your bootloader is still locked.

I would follow the team Unlimited instructions and go back to step #6 or 7 (depending if you needed BabyRacun) and go through it again. This is what is recommended by the devs.

You "might" be able to get away with just unlocking your bootloader again (step #11), but that's up to you if you want to try that.

curious as to what guide you used? i never heard of this happening. when you used dirty racun did you unlock the phone? you need to do that before you run the dirty racun file.

OK, repeating step 11 gives me the not allowed error.

Also, I guess I need to bactrack a bit. thought I would need baby racun, but I didnt...
so I had mainver 3.16.651.3 at first, but before going for S-off I just did a typical root by unlocking, flashing TWRP 2.5, and installing CWM root.

Then, I tried to install a rom, Flipz fresh rom version 5.1.1, as this was the only version I could get my hands on. During step 4 of 6, creating symlinks, my phone turns off. I try to reboot and voila, I have no OS! Fastboot reports I have NO mainver, it returns blank when I query it, and when i do getvar all, it does not show up in the list.

So, from here I attempt to follow dirty racun, I follow all the way through, except I skipped the part about "if you have mainver 3.16.651.3." So, I do all this and I successfully put on the 2.9 Hboot RUU, and my phone works again, fantastic!

It reports a mainver of 3.15.651.16. I then ran dirty racun and it hangs after the corn dog part, I get about 25 rows of dots, unplug the phone. Then i try again, it seems to continue where it left off, hangs again after he nibbles and gets full, I unplug the phone again, which does indeed show I have s off. I didnt want to try dirty racuning a 3rd time, but I guess I will need to try that.

curious as to what guide you used? i never heard of this happening. when you used dirty racun did you unlock the phone? you need to do that before you run the dirty racun file.
Yes, it was unlocked. dirty racun did start for me. I followed the unlimited.io guide (sort of), the only guide I could find.

Thanks!

Wait, you had CWM recovery on the phone?

That recovery was not working properly and was scrapped last year.

That might be the problem at the moment.

Let me look up some things.

Could you please link us the location of the recovery file you downloaded etc. This might help. :)

I followed some guide that said to use TWRP as a recovery, then install CWM-supersu, so I realize that CWM is in the name, but I thought I had TWRP recovery, and that The CWM was just the "rooting" app, and not recovery...? I am admittedly confused about that.

Also, I forgot to mention above, after losing my OS, and before starting to Dirty Racun, I did some wipes, and then tried some factory restores which failed, but I think the wipes removed the CWM root.

Also, I reflashed the stock recovery right before doing the Dirty Racun root. Here is the guide I used to root initially:
How to Root HTC Evo 4G LTE! [Unlock Bootloader][ICS/JB][4.1.1] | HTC Evo 4G Hacks!

THe DL link to the package, provided by the guide, is here:
Download HTCEvo4GLTE/rooting/Evo4GLTERoot2.zip at DownloadAndroidROM.com

Ok, I was worried for a sec there. :)

If you tried to flash TWRP, then we don't have to worry about the /Misc partition. You're cool. :)

I'd also stay away from that root guide, it's not updated very often. ;)

Let me check on something really quick. BRB :)

The more I think about this, the more confused I become.

Post up exactly what is shown on your bootloader screen, this may help going forward.

I think you originally had Mainversion 3.16.651.3, and you should have run BabyRacun. This may be where the problem lies.

yet another htc hack victim. i wished you came here earlier. oh well better late than never.

what is your hboot and baseband(radio)? i wonder if trying to use a ruu and then try unlocking will work or not.

I certainly did, but as I said before, after I killed my os my phone reported nothing for mainver, so I thought I was safe. Well that's not entirely true. I actually tried to do the babyracun stuff, but from the beginning where it said "you need TWRP or some other recovery that supports sudo ./adb" I could not get adb to work while in recovery so I skipped the babyracun section.

I am at work right now so I can't send a screenshot or do any terminal operations to my phone! Will definitely report back when I get home though.

ok you can't skip directions when it comes to something like this. everything has an order and it needs to be followed to the t. for twrp, you need to be in fastboot and not in recovery.

if you can let us know what your hboot and radios we might be able to find a ruu for you. not sure if it will work or not.

I sort of thought I was not skipping since that was no longer my mainver, but point well recieved.

what? I'm not sure what youre trying to say here. If you mean, to flash TWRP, I must be in fastboot? Of course. As for using adb while in recovery, can you please clarify that? WHen I was in TWRP recovery, "adb devices" reported nothing.

I can't give a screenshot, but here is what my bootscreen says:

when you go into the bootloader there should be a fastboot option. sorry i was thinking of fastboot commands and not adb. you need the phone booted up with usb debugging turned on in order for adb commands to work.

i would go here:Unlimited.IO and download the 2.09 hboot ruu. and then try to get the bootloader unlocked.

if this does not work then my suggestion is to try their irc channel:Unlimited.IO and ask them to see where you can go from here as i honestly not sure how to fix it if the ruu does not work.

OK, I was confused. I thought that I somenow needed to be able to use adb from within my recovery. That part seems unclear on unlimited's part, why do they mention needing a recovery that supports adb, if I am going to be using it while I am booted up in usb debug mode?

Secondly, I want to clarify: I have a completely working phone. I am currently using the RUU you just mentioned. I just can't flash anything. Are you saying, I should try to reflash the RUU I am currently using, again?

Hmm. I am already using that RUU, and other than not being able to flash from the terminal, my phone is working just fine. Are you suggesting I try to reflash the RUU I am already using?

Sorry didnt mean to repost thought my last one didnt go through for some reason.

well twrp is needed for babyracun. you need to adb command to push the file to the phone. it is not really needed any where else. if you follow the directions step 6 which is for baby racun.

i think at this point your best bet is to talk to unlimited via their irc channel as i have no idea how to get your phone to where it should be. your phone is in a very weird state.
s-off, but unlocked.

with either of racuns i think the bootloader should have changed. other than starting all over and try dirty or baby racun again, try the irc channel.

sorry I am still a little foggy here. I need to have access to adb, while in recovery. I should be able to do this inside of twrp. Do I have to do something special inside of twrp so that I can use adb while in twrp?

Beyond that, thanks for all of your help! I will definitely be IRCing with unlimited.io if I cannot resolve the problem by rerunning baby or dirty racun again.

sorry:o yeah step 6 you do need to be in recovery to do the adb commands. are you opening up the command in the right folder? what happens when you type adb shell?

edit:also are you doing this in ubuntu?

OK, thanks for clarifying. I know when I tried this last I was in the right folder (at least I think I was!) but, I can't check that right now since I'm not home. I was using Ubuntu 12.04 liveCD to do all this.

OK, I just installed TWRP from from my sdcard using the bootloader on the phone, then I installed root from there. I'm a little confused now, my phone is "locked" and unrooted yet I was able to do this. I can confirm unrooted because I tried using a an app that requires root and it said I was not rooted. (sixaxis pair tool). Can you just do that straight away on the ltevo, install twrp and root, without unlocking anything? Or is it because I have the s off, so that was allowed, and my "locked" status is not quite accurate? Because my bootloader still defintel says locked.

wait so do you have recovery? if you do and if you can flash things or make nandroid backups then you might be ok.

the way it works is that you need to be fully rooted by either s-off or unocked. this will allow you to install a custom recovery which is where the magic happens. after recovery then you need to either flash the su(superuser) or flash a custom rom that has su cooked in.

su is what gives permission to change the system partition. without it root required apps will not work. so you might be partially rooted at this point.

if you do have recovery and it allows you to flash things, then you should be fine.

if you want to set it so that your phone is not in a weird state then i would ask the unlimited guys for answers.

Personally I would go to the IRC channel Ocn posted above and check with Team Unlimited.

They may have a way of changing your bootloader, or sorting this out.

Yup!:smokingsomb:

I thought that, S-off in itself was not actually a root, it was just essentially, you are in a state where it is really easy to gain root from there.

So, what I did, I installed twrp by doing the thing where you put it in the root of ur sd card and rename it to pj75img.zip and it installs it for you when you go into the bootloader. from TWRP, I installed suroot, and I am now rooted :D. So that is good.

Since I was able to just up and do that, does that mean that SOME security has been taken care of by s-off, perhaps just not the ability to flash via the terminal?

...ALSO, I want to be using flipz fresh rom. The newest version I believe requries you flash directly with s-off capability. With my still locked phone, I don't believe I can do that. I would settle for installing the older 5.1.1 version via TWRP, but I don't want that to fail again, and be back to where I started from. Is there anyway I can do the unlocktocken thing from recovery or some other way directly from the phone, since I cannot seem to flash it from terminal? I know you guys have referred me to talk to unlimited.io, I will do that! just wondering though.

And finally, anyone maybe have a link to 5.3 fresh rom? All links seem to be dead. Sorry to be bugging you for a link, just thought I would ask!

if you want to set it so that your phone is not in a weird state

at the end of the day, I suppose it doesn't matter if I am at least rooted.

sort of....s-off means that you have turn off the securities so that you can install su which is what gives you root permissions on apps. also having s-off you can also change recoveries from stock to a custom one.

correct that is what s-off is

i'm not sure which rom you are talking about.....do you have a link? you have s-off so i do not think it should be an issue. if you have recovery you should be good to go regardless if you have a locked bootloader.
And finally, anyone maybe have a link to 5.3 fresh rom? All links seem to be dead. Sorry to be bugging you for a link, just thought I would ask!
you can get a list of roms here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/614073-list-utilities-roms-kernels.html
it is a stickied found at the top of this forum.

at the end of the day, I suppose it doesn't matter if I am at least rooted.

i think you should be fine with a recovery, i say pick a rom and try it out and see if it will let you flash a rom.....checkout the staff picks for suggestions. i would recommend either meanbean or viper.
