I was reading on some other sites and perhaps it was on here as well but I just missed it. After I installed Gingerbread 2.3.5, like many others, I had the tethering issues, the phone turning off and on and still was kind of laggy, slow email opening, etc. I found where I needed to do a factory reset. I did this and reinstalled my apps and contacts, rebuilt my screens and the Cappy is now on FIRE like I have never seen it. I am so happy with it I may not even change to a new phone when my contract expires this June. For the first time since Jine 2010, I love this phone. Everything is lightning fast and I am so pleased. It was a little work to re-establish everything but well worth the little bit of work. The issues I was having are gone.

I'm so glad that you're having the same reaction as me!
I did the same exact process as you; before the factory reset, it was getting FCs from tethering manager, and shutting down randomly...
Now, after the reset, it's brilliant. No lag, GPS works great, battery life is about 18 hours, no FCs from tethering manager.
I would absolutely recommend the factory reset for all whom are unhappy

"Factory reset wipes the /data partition, which holds user data. Superuser resides on /system partition, which isn't wiped, and the fresh system after wipe will retain root access. Superuser app might be installed on /data, but the actual SU file will be on /system.
To remove root, you need to unroot - or flash non-rooted stock ROM."

Basically you lose user data and does a software reset, but not system data. A factory reset is not a repartitioning of the phone as a whole.
