So, reading a thread on the issues with scratching on the aluminum iPhone 5...
I find it funny that so many iPhone people buy the phone because it is so sexy, and the 1st thing done is throw an otter box on it.
Really, there are so many iPhones with otter boxes, that I cannot remember the last time I've seen a naked iPhone of any series.
I'm not against cases, nor iPhones (now getting boring) but it just seems that so many iPhone owners are enamored with its beauty and it IS a huge, if not the top reason they buy one. However, 99% of the iPhones out there have cases on them. I don't think I've ever seen a case on an iPhone that wasn't rubber; no TPU, no silicone, no shell, just large rubber bricks, things that will not fit inside a pocket.
It almost seems like false advertising when you see an ad for the iPhone with no case on it. It will have a case on it the day someone purchases it.
Are they really that fragile? It seems that on drop tests, they do fine. I guess having a scratch on the back is horrid and everyone will just look at you funny. Like having a stain on your shirt, so you walk around all day with a bib on just to protect your fancy shirt. "You like my $700 silk shirt?" when all you see is the protective bib on it.

Not trying to start anything, but these things just get me thinking and make me laugh.

I think thats most phones. Most Samsung phones I see have cases also. I definitely agree with you though. I always read online "oh this phone is soooo beautiful" or "this phone is soo ugly" then they just pop a case on it anyway. It's funny.

I saw an iPhone 5 in the wild the same day they were available. I think most of the staff at my favorite restaurant had them that day. And they all put cases on them as soon as they can and for good reason... I've never seen so many screens crack as I've seen on iPhones. The percentage of cracked screens I've seen on iPhones is absurdly high. So I don't blame them. One friend of mine has cracked a screen on every single iPhone generation!

Personally, I've never cracked a screen on my Android phones but I've dropped enough of them to know that I really should have a case on my phones. It's just too easy to do. With my Note 2, I went so far as to run out to another carrier's store to get a very over-priced case for it to make sure I was protected as early on as possible.

Sadly, these pretty phones just don't stay pretty for long without a case.
I would rather have a pretty phone under my case, than a scratched chipped phone without a case. Just my preference.

Exactly, it's such a selling point for phones though, to say, this phone looks absolutely beautiful, it is solely used to get the consumer to buy their product.

Yes we immediately put a case on it, but still, a lot of people i know have taken their device out of the case to, "Show it off", and say, "Doesn't it look awesome?" then put it back in the case, and i just laugh a bit :p

Consumers are gullible for cheap gimmicks when buying devices, and unfortunately this is one of them.

I never use cases. The Zagg full body kits or similar products prevent scratches without adding bulk or hiding the phones "natural beauty". Lol

and the real irony is that the cases and specifically Otterbox are actually damaging the anodized finish on the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 damaged possibly cause of otterbox? - MacRumors Forums

He's too afraid to clean his phone, wants to sue. Haha, even apple users want to sue. Perhaps Apple's desire to sue everyone is rubbing off (pun intended) on everyone.
I've never seen so many paranoid people.

"I have a case on my phone and I take it out every night to clean the dirt and debris from my daily use and put it back in, it's more like a ritual."

"Everyone saying 'just put a case on it'... now what?" My God the sky is falling the sky is falling!

"I also don't take it to the gym with me or leave it in my pocket for any long periods of time. " Really? Heaven forbid your phone is not designed to survive a pocket. Must be nice feeling with an iPhone otter box combo in your pocket. I can just hear the comments now...is that an iPhone in your pocket or are you just...

"Have you tried wiping it with some quick detailer on a microfiber cloth (auto detail liquid)? "
"No I'm worried about damaging it further. "

"I just used the clear screen protector on the inside of the rubber back to prevent that type of damage and protect the Apple logo area."

"I would be careful with windex- it has ammonia which may react with aluminum (probably not strong enough but who knows), and anything with alcohol which might remove the olephelic layer on the screen. "
I don't think I'd buy a phone that might be damaged by windex.

There is one more thing... just one more thing... Steve, we miss you...

Android forums are so booooring compared to iPhone threads!

While I LOVE the look of my S3, and think it's a very nice looking phone, I immediately put a case on it when I bought it, because I'm clumsy, and I KNOW I'll drop it sooner or later.

original question? nope, ever since the 4 they all look the same to me. you seen one apple you seen 'em all. they don't try to be different, despite their old motto being 'think different'

i thought the iPhone 5 was a myth though? didn't they come out with the 4S to prove that?

What's the difference between the iPhone 4, 4S,and 5?
The size of the otter box.

Actually I've seen a fair few. Where I disagree is the Otterbox or large silicone case: most iPhones I see are cased, but rarely a bulky silicone lump - usually something that covers the back & has a bit of a lip around the screen.

Yeah, there are some very svelte cases out there, especially for the iPhone, that don't look half bad. Honestly, I wish phone manufacturers would get in the case business, and make a case with the same design inspiration as the phone. That way if you think the phone is beautiful, the case will most likely look good too.

Since I'm Army, I bet the reason I see so many OtterBoxes is because we are often in the field, weapons ranges, etc and subjecting phones to more daily abuse then office type people. All I ever see is those otterboxes.

Haha, I just came up with a brilliant game! Next time an iPhone user makes fun of the fact that you use Android, challenge them to a 12" naked drop test :D

I reckon 99% of all high-end handsets I see have a case on them. Most common are Griffin/Tech21 on iPhones, CaseMate or Samsung's own on GS3s, CaseMate or HTC hard-shells on One Xs. I see nothing odd about wanting to protect your

i have thought these "issues" are silly too...

many say.. it is ugly.. so it aint even an option.
but once in a case.. how cares what it looks like?????

what about people who say...so thin, it is so sexy! I got to have this phone!.
then proceed to put on a very thick case!

even a nice looking phone like the S3.. are mostly in some kind of cases.
what if they made.. a samsung S3 with a rubberized casing. so as to reduce the over all thinkness and size (compared to phone plus case). (also more room for a bigger battery). so the phone would be bigger than normal S3, but smaller than a phone plus case.

would people buy that??
NO.. i guess they would get the thinner, sexy, pretty version.. and proceed to add an otter box!

I have never used a case with any phone. I personally can't stand the look or feel of using one. I like my phone as is and try my best to treat it kindly!
