Malaysia Airlines tragedies

You're not the only one.

Right up to this latest incident, airlines were routing over the Eastern Ukraine routinely. Only after the reports of MH17's crash were confirmed did Lufthansa, BA, Aeroflot et al instruct avoidance. I fail to see any "secrecy" in this chain of events.

I feel if you know its a fight going on why have a route through it . I would have a commercial no fly zone . as back in April they said for america to avoid flying over .

Press conference from Malaysian Airlines in 1.5 hour.

The two 'Black Boxes' are found.

The Ukrainian president invited our Dutch experts to come over to help the investigation.
He emphasized this was not an accident but a terrorist act.

And now another plane shot down today 7-17-14. They are not having any luck. At least on this one they have the plane and know it was shot down.

My guess is it's Malaysian Airlines being cheap asses. Probably costs more in fuel to go around.

I got to fly back to Beijing on Tuesday. Any suggestions for an airline that will get me there?

I hear this one is pretty safe.

The pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine recently stole a BUK missile launcher and were bragging about it. Now this happens. Not much mystery involved this time.

Looks like a lot of the passengers were from the Netherlands. My sympathies, Kaat.

I don't think the airline had anything to do with it in this case. Could just as easily have been any of them.

If and when the missile shooter is confirmed, Malaysia Air will instantly blame them for the first disappearance too, to get the monkey off their back.

There were probably 154 Dutch aboard. There were 27 Australians on board, 23 Malaysians (including the crew), 11 Indonesians, six Britons, four Germans, four Belgians, three Filipinos and one Canadian. The nationality of 47 others is still unknown.
These people were flying home, starting their holidays, or traveling to the World Aids Conference in Melbourne.

This is a terrible incident. My deepest condolances to every one who lost a relative or a friend.

 That doesn't even make sense.

I doubt the wannabe Russians were shooting down any commercial airliners over the Indian Ocean. (without a trace)

I didn't say it made sense ;), but it still wouldn't surprise me if it happened. MA will say anything to put all this behind them.

The no fly zone was for planes flying below a certain altitude. The MH 17 flight was above this altitude, so it was not in the no fly zone. Other airlines were flying over Ukraine above this altitude as well. Only after MH 17 was shot down did airlines avoided Ukraine airspace entirely.

Also, the US did prohibit flights from flying over part of the Ukraine. The prohibited area is not where MH 17 was shot down. MH 17 was shot down some distance north of the prohibited area.

Then you'll have to include every other airline flying between Europe and Asia in that. Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways and even Aeroflot were using it right up until this incident.

MH17 was following a standard international flight corridor, approved by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, with no restrictions on civilian aircraft at normal cruising altitudes. The filed flight plan requested an altitude of A35 through Ukranian airspace, but local ATC instructed it to fly at A33 according to a statement from Malaysian Airlines.

Please, let's show some respect and sensitivity. 298 people lost their lives senselessly, amongst them at least 20 young children and several entire families.

AF has many members from countries who had citizens aboard MH17, any one of whom might know one of the deceased passengers. To them, no "joke" can be even remotely funny right now.

Still safer than driving. Avoid flying on Malaysian Airlines or over Ukraine, and you eliminate two huge variables.

I don't think there's any remaining reputable airline that's flying over that region left for the time being. But agreed, flying is vastly safer than almost any other form of transportation.
