Help Manage Applications vs. Task Killer

Lurker
I'm a new refugee from the Moment boards, just having purchased my new Shift last night. I did scan this forum but am still a little confused. From what I can tell, I don't need a Task Killer (upon which I was dependent for the Moment) but (and perhaps this is a silly question) - how do you ensure your apps are closed/not working in the background?

I've already done many of the tweaks to the battery in that helpful post (thanks!) but when I open the "manage applications" setting I see a lot of apps that I don't use are running. Do I stop these or is their usage so minimal it shouldn't affect the battery. Of course I would install any that I never planned to use anyway...

Those apps aren't doing anything and they are not using any battery. They are showing up for quick loading of the apps. This thread needs to be moved to the forum for the EVO shift.

Froyo and higher versions of Android OS do not require task killers. Welcome to the Evo, former Moment user myself.

Why you do not need a task Killer

The "Manage Applications" list shows all apps including cached apps. See the link KENNECTED posted to understand a bit more about how Android manages things.

It would be nice if the Manage Applications app only listed running apps, or had an option to list according to app state, so people would know a bit more about what the system is doing.

If you use a file manager to send a picture via email, the file manager calls the send activity of the email app, passes the file name to it and the email app is what is actually sending the picture.. not the file manager. If you see an app running that you didn't launch, it may be because that app was called by another app to perform a task. If you kill the app you didn't launch, the system has to relaunch that app in order to complete its task. This is why some people kill a task and then see it immediately running again. The system is doing its job and killing the task over and over causes the system to expend more resources than otherwise necessary.

Yep, you're right - I was so excited to be here that I clicked errantly. This also explains why I had to search for my own post when I couldn't find it in the Shift forum! Hopefully a moderator will help me out (unless I can move it myself?).

Thanks to all for the helpful info!

I used the report button to ask that it be moved.
