Help Many Apps have disappeared

My EVO 4G started responding slowly a couple weeks ago.

Last week, two icons were replaced on the main screens with the message "Difficulty in loading icon" (or something similar). I longpressed and selected the same Apps to re-place their icons with no problem. The problem re-occurred this morning, but I was unable to find the two Apps in the program listing. One of the apps is the built-in Internet and the other is Data On/Off (or similar) to control the 3G data operation on my phone.

This morning, most Apps have stopped working. I have generic Android icons with the App names in their place, but they don't do anything.

I went into Manage Applications and discovered that these apps take up considerably less space than before (say, 130 KB instead of 15 MB).

Most, but not all, of the problematic Apps are installed on my microSD card. I put the card in an adapter and connected it to my computer; it seems the Apps are all in the .android_secure folder and they appear to be the right sizes. Also, the uSD card doesn't seem to have any memory errors.

Last week, I installed Go SMS Pro and it seemed to be working properly for a few days, but I did notice Yesterday that, about half the time I turned on the display, Go SMS Pro was displaying a text from 2 days earlier (usually a different text each time).

What else should I be looking at?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

I'd suspect that the SD card was going bad. See if replacing the card fixes the problem.

I did not replace the card, but I did pop it into a USB adapter and was able to read it on my computer (I opened several files).

I also tried re-installing Apps using Google Play. That worked for the first App (IMDB), but then Google Play (which is stored in the phone, not the SD card) went bad, too.

Also, after re-booting, the IMDB App stopped working again.

Connected my phone to my computer and looked at the files (internal and uSD card).

I don't know if this will help any, but there are two files in LOST.DIR. One of them is named "7" and lists Date and Time as as [invalid], but the file is readable as binary (mostly 0x00).

The other file is named "99390" and seems to be associated with my CoPilot Navigation software. While it does include my e-mail address, it has an inordinately long password (certainly not anything I've every used).

At this point I'd bring it to the store and ask them to evaluate the problem. There are too many possibilities to make any useful conclusions remotely like this.

I decided to replace the phone. While I was waiting for it to arrive (bought an EVO 4G LTE on eBay), I could still use the EVO 4G as a phone, just not as anything else.

I rebooted the EVO 4G Sunday evening and noticed a couple things that were unusual. First, the boot time was about as long as during normal operation (it had gotten faster in the last couple weeks leading up to the semi-crash).

Second, some of the Apps' icons were restored and those Apps with restored icons now work again. This happened for some of the built-in Apps (Maps, Play Store, Voice Dialer and Wi-Fi) and some of the 3rd party Apps (TuneIn Radio, Gmail, Meetup, Advanced Task Killer, Cell Radio and Phone.com). Did not fix CoPilot Live, Facebook, IMDb or DirecTV.

Oh, well... in a couple days I will have rooted the new phone and configured it as I need it. Then, I will do a hard reset on the old phone and see if I can get it into sell-able condition.

Thanks for looking at this problem, but it does seem to be one of life's little conundrums.

It seems to be a moot point by now, as no one is responding to my posts, but I did find a fix that works for some of the Apps that were installed on the SD card instead of the phone's internal memory.

Go into the App Manager and move each non-functional App, one at a time, to the Phone's memory, then immediately move it back to the SD card.

Of course, the internal Apps can't be helped by this technique (I still don't have Google Play working), but it could restore a greater degree of functionality in a pinch.

sorry, but the og evo is not as popular as it once was.......i'm still surprised though that people still have one......lol

were you able to root your phone?

if so then you can also move the apps to the sd card with a2sd. the "move to sd card" functionality in gingerbread did not really move the whole app to the card....only parts of it. but scripts like dark tremors or a2sd moves the whole app to the sd card provided the card is partitioned.

I bought an EVO 4G LTE. Still have the 4G. Once I get it Foxx, I'll see how popular it is on eBay with all its accessories.
