Maps 7.0.2

There is offline maps still.

They just have a really roundabout way of getting it until they can get it properly implanted.

View the area you want to save and type OK maps into the searchbar
 
Took me a few minutes to realize why the blue navi shortcut was gone. Who ever at google approved this update should be shot, hung, then shot again. Good thing this update can be uninstalled and be able to use the 6.14.2 version.
 
That sends me chills lol. Im glad the world is pressuring those US states to scrap the death sentence :beer:
 
I still haven't installed the updated maps, it's just sitting there waiting to never be updated. I may give this a try though, looks pretty good (if it works!).

Don't do it. It is worst piece of crap I've ever seen come out of Google, and has ruined what was once one of Android's strongest apps. Worse disaster than the Apple's map. Constantly crashes, now takes about 10 clicks to enter a destination vs what used to be one or two, if you can even get through all those clicks without crashing it. Just a disaster of an update with no redeeming qualities.

Crashing may depend on your device/software. On mine it had the functionality reductions discussed, but was perfectly stable ("was" because I'm back on 6 at the moment).
 
I've had the new update for awhile, and did not lose the Nav or Local icons. However, as I was setting up Papajins G S3 yesterday I noticed when I updated Maps it was missing the Nav and Local icons. It appears as though you don't even need them. I can get voice Navigation and Local places to work from within Maps without having to ever click on either icon.

If I had to rate Id give it 5 stars. While getting use to where things are is a pain in the rear, I feel it's a huge improvement to how it was before.

Funkylogik; I don't drive either, but as a passenger I find it very useful when Papajin is asking for directions somewhere (GPS Maps in our SUV are way outdated most times), or what time something closes etc. etc. etc.
 
Everybody's uninstalling the so called upgrade. Google really pulled an Apple with this one...
 
Yeah the play store nags you to use automatic updating and the average person probably does so they really should have properly beta tested it, not for bugs but for peoples opinion. Id probably be pissed off if i relied on it and wasnt android-savvy enough to roll back. Imagine the amount of people who dont use android sites like this who are just suffering it..... bit extreme but its probably had a toll on the economy with people who rely on it getting lost lol :D

Sad but true. First they mess up Talk, now this. The number of 1 star ratings in Google Playstore speak for themselves. I really hope Google get their act together...
 
what did 7.0.2 fix? are the zoom in and out buttons back, do the menu and search buttons work on the phone now?
I complained along with others on the google map blog as well, they posted there that that made it like the iphone version, if they continue to dumb down all their Android apps to match the iphone version then they will loose a lot of market share because people will then just buy an iphone.

It automatically gives you alternate routes. It will list several and give you drive times for each. You just pick the one you want.


See down on the bottom right where it says 39 minutes? Tap on that.

I don't drive and I think I know more about the new Map app than most lol.
 
I too was aghast when it appeared that the one finger zoom in/out had been removed. While in motion I simply cannot do a two finger pinch.

Alas, the screen buttons are gone but the function remains - and is WAY better.

A single tap on the screen zooms to that location. A double tap and hold/swipe (tap once, tap again and hold) then a swipe up or down for a fast and fluid zoom in or out.

Brilliant. Took me 30 seconds of playing with this to program my right thumb muscle memory.

It seems much of the vitriol over this maps release has been user ignorance and impatience (myself included). A "my maps" solution and I'll be back in the saddle.

wonder if that was found by chance? if there's a faq somewhere that would be nice.

ignorance implies the information is readily available, but people choose not to get the info for one reason or another.

zoom out, my maps and starred locations are the only reason i'm still not accepting v7.

Same here ... I've put a great deal of personally-useful information into My Maps and My Places (starred locations) especially to use with Google Maps, and to have those features missing is hard to accept.

My Places (starred locations) is still to find in Maps: The button with the person icon on the upper right corner.

I even found a way to "convert" the POIs of My Maps in starred locations ... but it is a lot of work :(

I tried the latest update (I always do), but the area it would let me download for offline use was a fraction of the size of what Maps 6 does. As I travel internationally, and data roaming is still the last big rip-off standing, this is a real loss of functionality to me, so once again I reverted.

The surprising thing is how narrow Google's thinking is. I can understand that their business is ads, so they want you to use online so they can serve up to date ads and points of interest. But these things don't change that quickly, and most people don't have unlimited data and ubiquitous coverage. So the time limit for offline maps is already shorter than is reasonable, but reducing the area limit too? It's clear that these people never actually leave the Bay Area, and don't give serious thought to the range of user requirements for a company with a global customer base.

Sorry, it's late and I'm pissed-off with pointless reduction of functionality.
 
Nah youre right man. Its like their push towards cloud services and lack of expandable storage.. they arent living in the real world where mobile data is unreliable and expensive. I think it could be their downfall getting too ahead of themselves and enforcing their ideals.
Like socialism is a great idea but if you enforce it it becomes communism and a form of fascism. Lol im getn bit off tobic too brer :D
